As shown in
In embodiments, one or more cuts may be included in each of the transverse fold lines 15, 19, 23, 27, 31, 35, 57, 59. In exemplary embodiments, the transverse fold lines 15, 19, 23, 27, 31, 35, 57, 59 are cut/crease lines in which the cuts facilitate folding of the blank 8 at the fold lines. Any number of cuts may be formed in any of the fold lines, and the number and length of the cuts may be selected according to, for example, the gauge and/or the stiffness of the material used to form the blank 8. The fold lines 15, 19, 23, 27, 31, 35, 57, 59 may be formed by other methods (e.g., crease lines without cuts) without departing from the disclosure.
As shown in
In the illustrated embodiments, the blank 8 can include handle or gripping features. For example, the handle features can include handle openings 91 extending in the bottom panel 11 and handle flaps 93 extending in the central panel 43. As shown in
Referring to
As shown in
In embodiments, the carrier 1 formed from the blank 8 retains the containers C securely when the package 2 is grasped and carried. Further, in exemplary embodiments, the retention edges/features 46, 47a, 47b, 48a, 48b, 87 of the carrier 1 are held tight underneath the flanges F of the containers C so that the containers are held in the carrier without the need for the application of glue or other adhesive to any of the panels or flaps of the blank 8. For example, when the package 2 is carried (e.g., at the handle features), the weight of the containers C can press downwardly on the edges 47a, 48a, 47b, 48b of the side panels 13, 17, 29, 33 extending along the respective openings 41a, 42a, 41b, 42b and on the laterally-extending edge 46 of the end flap 45, which can help press the central panel 43 against the bottom panel 11 and help retain the carrier 1 in the erected configuration without the use of glue. Stated another way, the weight of the containers C can reinforce the engagement of the panels and flaps of the carrier to retain the carrier in its erect configuration. In addition, the brace flaps 81 can help retain the containers C by engaging under the flange F.
In embodiments, the handle features can be actuated (e.g., for lifting and carrying the package 2) by folding the handle flaps 93 downwardly from the central panel 43 along the fold lines 95 and through the handle openings 91 in the bottom panel 11. As the handle flaps 93 are folded out of the plane of the central panel 42, the handle flaps 93 can separate from the central panel along the cut or tear lines 97. In exemplary embodiments, the downwardly folded handle flaps 93 can engage one or more edges of the bottom panel 11 extending along the handle openings 91, which can help retain the carrier 1 in the erected configuration (e.g., can help lock the central panel 43 to the bottom panel 11). For example, the engagement between the handle flaps 93 and the bottom panel 11 at the handle openings 91 can resist relative movement between the central panel 43 and the bottom panel 11 to help retain the carrier in its erected configuration.
In the illustrated embodiments, the blank 208 can include retention features for helping to retain the carrier 201 in its erected configuration (
In exemplary embodiments, the clip-style carriers of the disclosed embodiments can provide increased stability, resistance, and strength, as well as a comfortable and reliable carry experience. The carriers can be adapted to be suitable for multiple bottle types, sizes, and configurations. The carriers and packages can be formed/assembled manually and/or by machine. In embodiments, the structure of the carriers can be shaped around the top portions T of the containers C (e.g., the bottle heads) to facilitate increasing the rigidity of the packages. In exemplary embodiments, the two clipping methods (e.g., the brace flaps 81 in combination with the openings 41a, 42a, 41b, 42b in the side panels 13, 17, 29, 33) can help strengthen the packages and can get stronger as they engage with the containers C when the package is picked up via the finger holes (handle features). In embodiments, the structure of the carrier allows the package to be assembled without needing glue.
The carriers of any of the illustrated or non-illustrated embodiments of the disclosure could have other features (e.g., dispenser features, handle features, reinforcement features, etc.) without departing from the disclosure. Also, the carriers could be otherwise shaped, arranged, and/or configured and the carriers could be configured to hold articles other than beverage containers C without departing from the disclosure.
Any of the features of the various embodiments of the disclosure can be combined with, replaced by, or otherwise configured with other features of other embodiments of the disclosure without departing from the scope of this disclosure. The carrier styles and panel configurations described above are included by way of example.
In general, the blanks may be constructed from paperboard having a caliper so that it is heavier and more rigid than ordinary paper. The blanks can also be constructed of other materials, such as cardboard, or any other material having properties suitable for enabling the package to function at least generally as described above.
The blanks can be coated with, for example, a clay coating. The clay coating may then be printed over with product, advertising, and other information or images. The blanks may then be coated with a varnish to protect information printed on the blanks. The blanks may also be coated with, for example, a moisture barrier layer, on either or both sides of the blanks. The blanks can also be laminated to or coated with one or more sheet-like materials at selected panels or panel sections.
The above embodiments may be described as having one or panels adhered together by glue. The term “glue” is intended to encompass all manner of adhesives commonly used to secure paperboard carton panels in place.
The term “line” as used herein includes not only straight lines, but also other types of lines such as curved, curvilinear or angularly displaced lines.
In accordance with the exemplary embodiments, a fold line can be any substantially linear, although not necessarily straight, form of weakening that facilitates folding therealong. More specifically, but not for the purpose of narrowing the scope of the present disclosure, fold lines include: a score line, such as lines formed with a blunt scoring knife, or the like, which creates a crushed or depressed portion in the material along the desired line of weakness; a cut that extends partially into a material along the desired line of weakness, and/or a series of cuts that extend partially into and/or completely through the material along the desired line of weakness; and various combinations of these features. In situations where cutting is used to create a fold line, typically the cutting will not be overly extensive in a manner that might cause a reasonable user to incorrectly consider the fold line to be a tear line.
The foregoing description of the disclosure illustrates and describes various embodiments of the present disclosure. As various changes could be made in the above construction without departing from the scope of the disclosure, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. Furthermore, the scope of the present disclosure covers various modifications, combinations, alterations, etc., of the above-described embodiments that are within the scope of the claims. Additionally, the disclosure shows and describes only selected embodiments, but other combinations, modifications, and environments are within the scope of the disclosure as expressed herein, commensurate with the above teachings, and/or within the skill or knowledge of the relevant art. Furthermore, certain features and characteristics of each embodiment may be selectively interchanged and applied to other illustrated and non-illustrated embodiments of the disclosure without departing from the scope of the disclosure.
