Abstract

Shrub rose plant suitable for cut flower production in greenhouse conditions, substantially as herein shown and described, characterized particularly by its upright growth and quartered blooms of medium-pink color and strong fruity fragrance.

Variety denomination: ‘AUSnotice’.

ORIGIN OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to a new and distinct variety of a shrub rose plant named ‘AUSnotice’ which was originated by me by crossing an unnamed, unpatented seedling with an unnamed, unpatented seedling.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The primary objective of this breeding was to produce a rose plant suitable for year round cut flower production under standard greenhouse conditions having medium pink blooms with a strong fragrance and long vase life, produced on strong, upright stems.

BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The objective was substantially achieved, along with other desirable improvements, as evidenced by the following unique combination of characteristics that are outstanding in the new variety and that distinguish it from its parents, as well as from all other varieties of which I am aware:

• • 1. Quartered blooms of medium-pink color.
  • 2. Upright growth.
  • 3. Strong fruity fragrance.
  • 4. Suitable for cut flower production under greenhouse conditions.

Asexual reproduction of this new variety by budding, as performed at Albrighton, England, shows that the foregoing and all other characteristics and distinctions come true to form and are established and transmitted through succeeding propagations.

Comparison with Parents

‘AUSnotice’ has medium-pink blooms which differ from the cream colored blooms of both the seed and pollen parents.

Comparison with Similar Variety

‘AUSmary’ produces deeply cupped blooms with an Old Rose fragrance, whereas the blooms of ‘AUSnotice’ have shallower cups and a fruity fragrance.

DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION

The following is a detailed description of my new rose cultivar with color descriptions using terminology in accordance with The Royal Horticultural Society (London) Colour Chart (2001), except where ordinary dictionary significance of color is indicated.

    • Pollen parent.—Unnamed Seedling. (Unpatented).

FLOWER

Observations made from plants commencing at two years of age grown in a greenhouse environment at Albrighton, England.

• Blooming habit: Continuous.
• Bud:
  • • Size.—About 3 cm long and 1.6 cm in diameter when the petals start to unfurl.
    • Form.—The bud form is pointed ovoid.
    • Color.—When sepals first divide, bud color is Red Group 47A. When half blown, the upper sides of the petals are Red Group 55A; and the lower sides of the petals are Red Group 55B.
    • Sepals.—Color: Upper surface: Yellow-Green Group 144B with Greyed-Purple Group 185A at base. Lower surface: Yellow-Green Group 144D with Yellow-Green Group 146D in center at base. Length: 2.8 cm. Width: 0.8 cm. Shape: Subulate. Surface texture: Upper surface: Smooth. Lower surface: Smooth. There is one lightly appendaged sepal[s]. There are four unappendaged sepals with canescent and slightly glandular edges.
    • Receptacle.—Color: Yellow-Green Group 144B. Shape: Campanulate. Size: Medium, about 1.2 cm long×1.1 cm wide. Surface: Smooth.
    • Peduncle.—Length: Long, averaging about 7 cm. Surface: Prickly. Color: Green Group 143A. Strength: Strong.
• Bloom:
  • • Size.—Large. Average open diameter is about 10.3 cm.
    • Borne.—In corymb shaped clusters of two to three blooms. For cut flower production buds may be nipped out to leave a single bloom.
    • Flowering stems.—Strength: Strong. Average length is about 50 cm with a diameter of 6 mm. Number: Usually 18.
    • Form.—When first open: Cupped. Permanence: Retains its form to the end.
    • Petalage.—Number of petals under normal conditions: 60.
    • Color.—The upper sides of the petals are Red Group 55B. The reverse sides of the petals are Red Group 54D. The bases of the petals are White Group 155B with Yellow Group 8B at center. The major color on the upper side is Red Group 55B.
    • Variegations.—None.
    • Discoloration.—The general tonality at the end of the first day: Red Group 55B. At the end of the third day: Red Group 55B (no change).
    • Fragrance.—Strong, fruity.
• Petals:
  • • Texture.—Satiny, thick.
    • Size.—Width: 4.6 cm. Length: 4.8 cm.
    • Surface.—Smooth.
    • Shape.—Obdeltoid. Margin. Entire and heavily undulating. Apex Shape: Obtuse. Base Shape: Rounded on outer petals, pointed on inner petals. Form: Outer petals are flat, inner petals are incurved.
    • Arrangement.—Quartered.
    • Petaloids.—Number: 2. Color: Red Group 51A.
    • Persistence.—Petals drop off cleanly before drying.
    • Lastingness.—On the plant: Long (about 6-8 days). As a cut flower: Long (about 6-8 days).
