Abstract

A new and distinct cultivar of Papaver plant named ‘White Ruffles’, characterized by its upright and compact plant habit; moderately vigorous growth habit; and flowers with ruffled white-colored petals.

Description

Botanical designation: Papaver orientale.

Cultivar denomination: ‘White Ruffles’.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Papaver, botanically known as Papaver orientale and hereinafter referred to by the name ‘White Ruffles’.

The new Papaver originated from an open-pollination in 2001 of an unnamed selection of Papaver orientale, not patented, as the female, or seed, parent with an unknown selection of Papaver orientale, as the male, or pollen, parent. The new Papaver was discovered and selected by the Inventor as a single flowering plant from within the progeny of the stated open-pollination grown in a controlled environment in Rijpwetering Wetering, The Netherlands in 2005.

Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar by divisions in Rijpwetering, The Netherlands has shown that the unique features of this new Papaver are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

Plants of the cultivar White Ruffles have not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature and light intensity without, however, any variance in genotype.

The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘White Ruffles’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘White Ruffles’ as a new and distinct cultivar of Papaver:

• • 1. Upright and relatively compact plant habit.
  • 2. Moderate vigorous growth habit.
  • 3. Flowers with ruffled white-colored petals.

Plants of the cultivar White Ruffles differ from plants of the parent selections in plant height as plants of the new Papaver are more compact than plants of the parent selections.

Plants of the new Papaver can be compared to plants of the cultivar Pink Ruffles, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 12,712. In side-by-side comparisons conducted in Rijpwetering, The Netherlands, plants of the new Papaver differed from plants of the cultivar Pink Ruffles in the following characteristics:

• • 1. Plants of the new Papaver were more compact than plants of the cultivar Pink Ruffles.
  • 2. Plants of the new Papaver and the cultivar Pink Ruffles differed in flower color as plants of the new cultivar Pink Ruffles had pink-colored flowers.

DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION

In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 2001 Edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. Plants used for the aforementioned photographs and following description were grown under conditions which closely approximate commercial production conditions during the late spring/early summer in an outdoor nursery in Rijpwetering, The Netherlands for about one year. During the production of the plants, day temperatures ranged from 14° C. to 27° C. and night temperatures ranged from 5° C. to 14° C.
