Description

Botanical classification: Phlox paniculata.

Cultivar designation: ‘Verpri’.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Phlox paniculata and will be referred to hereafter by its cultivar name, ‘Verpri’. ‘Verpri’ represents a new herbaceous perennial grown for landscape use.

‘Verpri’ was selected by the Inventor as a chance seedling in a seedling bed at a nursery in Haarlem, The Netherlands in summer of 2013. The seedling bed had been planted with a mixture of Phlox paniculata seed from unknown parents.

Asexual propagation of the new cultivar was first accomplished by stem cuttings by the Inventor in autumn of 2013 in Haarlem, The Netherlands. Asexual propagation by cuttings has determined that the characteristics of the new cultivar are stable and are reproduced true to type in successive generations.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The following traits have been repeatedly observed and represent the characteristics of the new cultivar. These attributes in combination distinguish ‘Verpri’ as a unique cultivar of Phlox.

    • 1. ‘Verpri’ exhibits a very dwarf and compact plant habit.
    • 2. ‘Verpri’ exhibits a floriferous blooming habit with an abundance of flowers.
    • 3. ‘Verpri’ exhibits a re-blooming habit.
    • 4. ‘Verpri’ exhibits flowers that are red-purple in color.
    • 5. ‘Verpri’ exhibits large leaves that are elliptic to narrow elliptic in shape.

‘Verpri’ can be most closely compared to the Phlox paniculata cultivars ‘Rijnstroom’ (not patented) and ‘Bartwelve’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 11,804). ‘Rijnstroom’ differs from ‘Verpri’ in having fewer flower stems, flowers that are less purple in color, a plant height that is 50% taller, leaves that are oblanceolate in shape and smaller in size, and in lacking a re-blooming habit. ‘Bartwelve’ differs in having flowers that are more purple in color with a dark red-purple eye, and in having a plant habit that is taller and less broad.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

The accompanying colored photographs illustrate the overall appearance and distinct characteristics of the new Phlox. The photographs were taken of a 1 year-old plant of ‘Verpri’ as field grown in Haarlem, The Netherlands and placed in a 15-cm container for the photographs.

The photograph in FIG. 1 is a view of a plant of ‘Verpri’ in bloom.

The photograph in FIG. 2 is a close-up view of an inflorescence of ‘Verpri’.

The photograph in FIG. 3 provides a close-up view of a leaf of ‘Verpri’.

The colors in the photographs may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description, which accurately describe the colors of the new Phlox.

DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE PLANT

The following is a detailed description of 1 year-old plants of the new cultivar as field grown in Haarlem, The Netherlands. The plants were grown under average day temperatures of 15° C. to 30° C. and average night temperatures of 12° C. to 20° C. The phenotype of the new cultivar may vary with variations in environmental, climatic, and cultural conditions, as it has not been tested under all possible environmental conditions. The color determination is in accordance with The 2015 R.H.S. Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society, London, England, except where general color terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.
