Description

Latin name of the genus and species: Anigozanthos hybrid.

Variety denomination: ‘KPCARN’.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The new cultivar is a product of a planned breeding program. The new variety originated as the result of the crossing made during 2016 of the female parent, an unpatented, proprietary Anigozanthos referred to as ‘14/119D’, and the pollen parent, an unpatented, proprietary Anigozanthos referred to as ‘14/49B’. ‘KPCARN’ was discovered and selected by the inventor at a research greenhouse in New South Wales, Australia during 2018.

Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar ‘KPCARN’ was New South Wales, Australia at a research laboratory by tissue culture during 2018. ‘KPCARN’ has since produced several generations and has shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The cultivar ‘KPCARN’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.

The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘KPCARN’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘KPCARN’ as a new and distinct Anigozanthos cultivar:

    • 1. Purple ovary hairs.
    • 2. Semi-erect leaf attitude.
    • 3. Early flowering.

PARENTAL COMPARISON

Plants of the new cultivar ‘KPCARN’ are comparable to the parent in most horticultural characteristics; however, the new variety ‘KPCARN’ differs in the following:

    • 1. The new variety produces a purple flower; the seed parent produces a flower with a dark green perianth tube with yellow ovary.

COMMERCIAL COMPARISON

Plants of the new cultivar ‘KPCARN’ are comparable to the commercial Anigozanthos variety ‘Kings Park Royale’, unpatented. The two Anigozanthos varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics; however, the new variety ‘KPCARN’ differs in the following:

    • 1. Ovary hair color of the new variety is purple, while the ovary hair color of this comparator is red.
    • 2. Leaf attitude of the new variety is semi-erect, while the leaf attitude of this comparator is erect.
    • 3. The new variety begins flowering earlier than this comparator.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS

The accompanying photograph in FIG. 1 illustrates in full color a typical plant of ‘KPCARN’ grown outdoors in Kangy Angy, NSW, Australia. This plant is approximately 15 weeks old, shown in a 14 cm pot.

FIG. 2 illustrates a close-up view of the flowers.

The photographs were taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.

DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
