  • Patent number: 4143509
Abstract: A time-keeping system of the type having an electromechanically driven, analog-type time display, has a purely electrical integral hour reset feature. The system comprises an analog time display including hour and minute hands driven through a mechanical transmission by a fast-response electromechanical motor. A stable oscillator generates a high frequency time base signal. A chain of frequency dividers coupled to the oscillator develops a time-keeping signal at a minute-related frequency for driving the analog time display in a normal time-keeping mode, and for developing hour reset pulses at a frequency much higher than one pulse per second for driving the analog time display during an integral hour reset operation.

  • Patent number: 4143512
Abstract: A chain has alternately arranged center links and sidebars that are interconnected by pins of a predetermined diameter. An elongated opening is provided in each center link for receiving two pins. Adjacent each end of the elongated opening, lugs project from the center link to restrict the opening opposite the lug to a transverse dimension less than the pin diameter. Each lug is spaced from an adjacent opening end by a distance enabling one pin to fit between the adjacent opening end and the lug. Each pin has a transverse groove for receiving one of the lugs when the pin is in a predetermined rotational angular relationship with the center link. Thus, the pins can be moved past the lugs, in directions to and from the adjacent ends of the elongated openings, when the pins are in the predetermined rotational angular relationship for assembly or disassembly of the chain. The lugs prevent collapsing of the chain when the predetermined rotational angular relationship is not maintained.

  • Patent number: 4143541
Abstract: The fluidity of a plastic fluid, cement mortar for example, is measured by passing the fluid through a flow passage packed with an aggregate for simulating an actual mould, measuring the flow pressure, and measuring the quantitative flow coefficient between the fluid and the flow passage. The pressure remaining in the passage after the fluid has been poured into the passage and after the flow speed has been decreased to zero or the pressure after a quantity of the fluid has been added to the passage and prior to the discharge of the fluid from the passage is measured to determine the relative shear stress yielding value. Thereafter, the fluid is caused to flow to determine again the relative shear stress yielding value, and the relative closure coefficient is determined by the difference between said two relative shear stress yielding values.

  • Patent number: 4143545
Abstract: A pressure gauge assembly for aircraft tires and the like having a helical coil bourdon tube sensor capable of indicating a pressure differential between a monitored source of pressure and a calibrated reference source of pressure. The reference pressure is applied to one surface of the bourdon tube coils while the monitored pressure is applied to the other surface of the coils. The resultant movement is a linear indication of any pressure differential. A valve assembly can be provided with the pressure gauge assembly to permit fluidic access to the monitored pressure. If the volume of the monitored pressure is variable such as an aircraft tire, the secondary source of calibrated pressure can be provided with a predetermined pressure relative to the normal tire pressure to compensate for any volumetric changes in the tire during operation. In an alternative embodiment, the bourdon tube can be used to monitor the pressure in a fire extinguisher for indicating any leaks.

  • Patent number: 4143546
Abstract: The work done by a sucker rod pump is read through the use of a pendulum potentiometer mounted on the walking beam of the pump and a load sensing pin located at the lower end of the wire line which is suspended from the horsehead. Meters mounted in a portable reading instrument show the maximum rod pull, the minimum rod pull, the stroke of the pump, and the area of the force-versus-stroke diagram. A display of the shape of the force-versus-stroke diagram may be given through the use of an X-Y plotter.

  • Patent number: 4143548
Abstract: A continuous wave ultrasonic wave transmitter transmits modulated waves in two opposite directions being intercepted by a forward receiver and an aft receiver. The received signals are demodulated and the relative phase is used to obtain a speed reading. The wave length of the modulator signal must be larger than the two, preferably equal transmitter-to-receiver spacings. A similar but orthogonally arranged receiver system permits acquisition of a speed vector. Different modulation frequencies are to be used for different speed ranges; all these frequencies are transmitted simultaneously and selection of the desired one is made in the processing circuit only.

  • Patent number: 4143549
Abstract: An arrangement for determining the temperature gradient within a fluid mem, which is used to ascertain the magnitude of vertical water movement, utilizes a pair of thermistors connected in a differential Wheatstone bridge that senses the temperature at two locations. The DC bridge driving voltage has its polarity periodically reversed for equal time intervals by a logic signal. The bridge output signal is converted to a variable frequency and counted during each of these different intervals in opposite directions. This subtraction process, which yields the temperature difference at the two locations, also, among other things, eliminates the effects of drift from the temperature measurement. The system also contains provisions for minimizing any offset caused by changes in the bridge driving voltage, amplifier offset instabilities and variations in other circuit components.

  • Patent number: 4143550
Abstract: A resistance-to-current converter in which a sensing resistor, such as a resistance thermometer bulb for sensing changes in temperature, forms an arm in a resistance bridge which is periodically excited by a switching circuit interposed between a power supply and the input junctions of the bridge. The voltage produced at the output junctions of the bridge during the "on" and "off" excitation states are separately detected. The detected signal obtained in the "off" state is subtracted from that obtained in the "on" state to produce an output signal from which there is eliminated the error component resulting from a leakage resistance path coupled to said sensing resistor.

  • Patent number: 4143553
Abstract: A search unit for detecting internal flaws in the web of a railroad rail includes a plastic polymer shoe having a base surface contoured to conform generally to the web surface and of sufficient width to extend substantially across the width of the web. A plurality of dual ultrasonic transducers, each transducer including a transmitter and a spaced receiver, form a linear array across the width of the shoe and are angled with respect to each other. A couplant fluid is injected between the shoe and the rail web through fluid inlets in the shoe as the unit is slid along the rail.
