Abstract: A manually powered multi-speed winch has an automatic drive disengagement upon drive reversal which is provided by an axially movable member in one drive train which in a first axial position is engageable for drive transmission through a pawl and ratchet unidirectional drive means. The drive means in its drive-transmitting condition prevents movement of the member away from that first position. Upon drive reversal the unidirectional drive means is ineffective either to transmit drive or to maintain the member in its first position and it moves axially to a second position in which the drive means are disengaged. The member is biased towards that second axial position but is manually movable to the first by a control button accessible at the outside of the winch. The button may be lockable to override the automatic disengagement.
Abstract: An improved pneumatic tube carrier is provided for transmitting papers, currency and other articles between various stations at locations within a building or building complex. The carrier hull is constructed of identical mating sections each formed in a generally semi-cylindrical shape from a single mold. The semi-cylindrical halves are hinged together along one longitudinal interface. A closure mechanism is provided at the opposite interface and includes a catch spring biased toward the hull. An adjustment mechanism limits the movement of the catch relative to the hull. Adjustment is possible to correct for catch disposition variations with prolonged use. Proper adjustment allows the hull to be self-latching upon closure. Adjustment is effectuated with the hull closed through a perforation near the hinged interface of hull sections, whereby an elongated tool is inserted into the perforation and is used to alter the adjusting mechanism.
Abstract: An improvement in a method for producing a synthetic hydroxyl ion-free quartz glass wherein a hydrogen free silicon compound is heated in a hydrogen-free gas stream while the gas stream is passed through an induction coupled plasma burner, the gas stream containing elemental and/or bound oxygen and the oxidation product is deposited on a refractory support as a vitreous mass, the improvement lying in including in the gas stream a gaseous hydrogen-free, thermally decomposable compound which yields fluorine in an amount of at least 500 gms. per kilogram of silica to be produced; an apparatus for producing a synthetic OH ion-free quartz glass comprising an induction coupled plasma burner which burner has disposed thereabout 3 concentric quartz glass tubes disposed in stepped configuration of which the outermost tube is the longest and the innermost tube is the shortest.

Abstract: An on-line system for determining the content, in a sheet material such as a paper web, of one or more additives such as titanium dioxide exhibiting relatively high-energy X-ray fluorescence and of an additive such as clay exhibiting relatively low-energy X-ray fluorescence. The sheet is irradiated with X-ray radiation of sufficiently high energy to cause the high-energy fluorescence additives to emit fluorescent radiation. Fluorescence intensity signals are generated as a function of the intensity of the fluorescent radiation from the high-energy fluorescence additives, and an absorption signal is generated as a function of the radiation passing through the sheet material without being absorbed. The fluorescence intensity signals are used to determine the content of the high-energy fluorescence additives and to determine the expected absorption of the exciting radiation by the material with the determined contents of those additives.
Abstract: Bias binding tape for one step sewing to the edge of the material to be trimmed, is formed as a single unit with a front tape portion, a rear tape portion and a base portion. The front and rear portions extend from the base portion in substantially the same direction to form legs of a bifurcated envelope which receives the material to be trimmed. In this way, both the front and rear portions may be sewn to the material at the same time, without the need for pinning or otherwise aligning two separate portions, or separate sewing of a front and a rear piece of bias tape. The base portion may include ruffles or other decorative trim as desired.
Abstract: Apparatus for protecting a wearer's neck against hyperflexion and hyperextension is employed in combination with protective head equipment and includes a pad removably carried by the protective head equipment for engaging a lower surface of a wearer's chin and a strap slidably received by the pad for securing the pad against the lower surface of the wearer's chin, the strap including an adjustable fastener for connection to the protective head equipment. Hyperflexion of the wearer's neck due to forward and downward movement of the wearer's head is limited when the pad is captured between the wearer's chin and chest. A second pad is removably carried by the protective head equipment for engaging the wearer's neck at the base of the wearer's head to protect the wearer against hyperextension of the wearer's neck due to backward movement of the wearer's head.
Abstract: Vascular prosthesis suitable for use as a surgical graft is produced by implanting a rod or tube in a living host animal such as a sheep and allowing collagenous tissue to grow on the implant to form a coherent tubular wall of collagenous tissue. The implant is subsequently removed and the tubular wall of collagenous tissue is stripped from the rod or tube and tanned in glutaraldehyde to serve as a vascular prosthesis.
Abstract: Heart valve including an annular valve body having an inner wall defining a blood flow passage, a guide strut including an integral pivot surface extending radially inward of the valve body and a disc occluder having a central aperture engaged over the disc guide strut, a disc stop extending radially inward of the valve body opposite the guide strut, and pivot projections extending radially inward of the valve body and equally spaced from the guide strut whereby the disc pivots between occluding and non-occluding surfaces in response to downstream blood pressure gradients across the disc.
Abstract: A device for joining a toilet seat and cover to a commode without using tools and from only one side. A base assembly is attached to the commode using a bolt rotated by a hand graspable head portion. A cover conceals the bolt assembly from view. In one embodiment the head portion of the bolt folds out of sight and into engagement with the base; a cover, attached to the base then folds over the handle. In another embodiment the head portion of the expanding bolt folds into the base; the base and the folded head forming complementary interlocking structures disguising the bolt assembly. The bolt employs a nut indexed to a slit on the stem portion of the base. Manipulating the head portion of the bolt draws the nut into engagement with the stem. The outward flaring of the stem anchors the bolt in the mounting holes of the commode. The head portion of the bolt holds the base on the commode. In one embodiment the stem is separable from the base.
Abstract: Apparatus for disposing of the waste from a boat head, the apparatus consisting of a flexible container which may be readily connected and disconnected from the discharge of the head, thus allowing selective discharge to storage or to the sea.
Abstract: A bathroom space expander including a first member removably but securely connected to a toilet tank cover, a second member swingably connected to the first member, hinge means connecting the members to a first closed storage position and a second open operational position. The second member including expandible side walls and a downwardly extending support member resting upon a toilet seat cover for keeping the second member in the horizontal operational position for use while folding clothes, diapering a baby or the like.
Abstract: A toddler-proof latch for a toilet flush lever having a housing adapted to be mounted to the wall of a water closet in a prearranged position in the vicinity of the flush lever. An actuating mechanism is carried at least partially within the housing and is manually actuable from a latching position to an unlatching position. A spring biasing arrangement is provided for the actuating mechanism to bias it towards the latching position. A latch arrangement is carried on either the housing or the actuator means and operates in response to the actuator means to prevent operation of the toilet flush lever when the actuator means is in the spring biased latching position and permits operation of the flush lever when the actuating mechanism is in the manually actuated unlatching position. Various embodiments adapted to mount over the toilet flush lever or adjacent to the flush lever are disclosed. A locking mechanism for the actuating means to selectively lock it into an unlatching position is also disclosed.
