  • Patent number: 4768308
Abstract: A universal polishing tool comprises a rigid cup having a circular rim to which is attached a relatively thin resilient polishing pad. In accordance with a method for using the tool, the tool is rotated about the axis of a support shaft causing the resilient polishing pad to move with respect to the surface which is being polished. The universal polishing tool is dynamically positioned as a function of time with respect to the surface being polished. The orientation and position as a function of time are determined by a control algorithm according to the geometry of the tool and the particular surface being polished and are controlled by means of a controllable positioning device. In the case of a spherical surface or a rotationally symmetric aspheric surface, the lens is rotated about its axis of symmetry during the polishing operation. In the case of a toric surface, the lens is oscillated about an axis which is normal to its center.

  • Patent number: 4768342
Abstract: A Stirling engine heater head is constructed to provide an annular heat exchange region defined between a pressure vessel sidewall and the engine displacer cylinder. From an external manifold, through which a heated fluid flows, either heat pipes or heat exchange tubes are sealingly introduced into the heat exchange region. Thermal energy is thus transferred to the engine working fluid, while the heated fluid is maintained isolated from the vessel walls and the displacer cylinder. For a compound Stirling engine configuration, thermal energy is introduced from a common heated fluid manifold to the heat exchange regions of a pair of axially aligned Stirling engine modules via heat pipes or heat exchange tubes. This manifold may be sealingly joined with the pressure vessel to create a chamber which is pressurized to pressure balance the vessel walls.

  • Patent number: 4768344
Abstract: For conversion of the waste heat into the mechanical energy, in the proposed expander the parts of rotor and circulatory tube have the crucial importance. The rotor is a rotational symmetric hollow disc with the comparison chambers tangentially positioned on its peripheral wall. At the outlet ends of these chambers the de Laval nozzles with corrected divergent parts for supersonic outflow of the fluid flows causing the rotation of rotor, are placed in the position of maximum torque arm. The circulatory tube enables that the part of the fluid from the outlet tube is returned to the expander in the regulated way. The compression chambers and the circulatory system support the favorable conditions of flowing through the nozzles at the partial duties of the heat engines.

  • Patent number: 4768345
Abstract: Continuous thermal energy delivery from a cyclically active thermal energy source having an ON period substantially exceeding an OFF period by passing working fluid through a central working fluid conduit passing through a containment means forming an annular chamber therewith, the annular chamber substantially filled with a liquid-solid phase change thermal energy storage material having a high specific heat in the liquid phase. During insolation, thermal energy superheats the thermal energy storage material and is conducted therethrough to heat the working fluid. During eclipse the superheated thermal energy storage material transmits heat to the working fluid and formation of solid phase of the thermal energy storage material releases heat of fusion adjacent the working fluid conduit for additional supply of heat to the working fluid. A thermal gradient is maintained across the thickness of the thermal energy storage material.

  • Patent number: 4768348
Abstract: A cooling unit for an automotive air-conditioning system, comprising an evaporator, a compressor, an expansion valve connected to the inlet port of the evaporator, an accumulator connected to the outlet port of the evaporator, a temperature sensor for detecting the temperature of the refrigerant at the outlet port or within the evaporator, and temperature control means which controls the degree of opening of the expansion valve so that the temperature of the refrigerant at the outlet port or within the evaporator is maintained above a predetermined temperature which is slightly higher than a temperature at which the evaporator becomes frosted. The degree of opening of the expansion valve is increased to raise the vapor pressure of the refrigerant in the evaporator, instead of stopping the compressor, when the temperature of the refrigerant at the outlet port or within the evaporator drops to the predetermined temperature, so that the frequency of starting and stopping the compressor is reduced.
