  • Patent number: 5157988
Abstract: A device for absorbing energy from a bicyclist's foot on the downward pedal stroke and releasing it shortly afterward into the drive chain to propel the bicycle is disclosed. The energy is stored in a coil spring which is connected between the sprocket wheel and an adjacent crank. The sprocket wheel is fitted to a bearing on the crankshaft and is free to rotate independently of the crank except as it is restrained by the connecting spring. If the crank and the sprocket wheel rotate relative to one another away, from the equilibrium position of the spring, the spring is compressed or stretched and the resulting force causes a restoring torque. When the magnitude and angle of the force stretch the spring on the pedal stroke, the invention allows the rider's foot to move quickly through the power stroke, where great force is exerted. Less time is spent by the rider in exerting force on the pedal; this saves muscle energy, since a muscle, unlike a spring, uses energy in exerting a static force.

  • Patent number: 5157990
Abstract: A system and method for controlling a vehicular power transmission in which, when a signal derived from a vehicle speed sensor is normal, a signal supplied to a first input terminal of the control unit is determined to be the signal of a switch used for an automatic cruise speed control device (ASCD) only when the signal derived from the vehicle speed signal satisfies a predetermined condition, e.g., when the vehicle speed is below a predetermined value. When the signal derived from the vehicle speed sensor does not satisfy the predetermined condition, e.g., when the vehicle speed is above the predetermined value, or when the vehicle speed sensor is abnormal, the signal input to the first supplied terminal of the control unit is determined to be the signal of a switch used for a self diagnostic function. Therefore, if the vehicle speed sensor operates abnormally, the control unit determines that the signal supplied to the first input terminal is derived from the switch used for the self-diagnostic function.

  • Patent number: 5157991
Abstract: A control system for an automatic transmission for a vehicle includes a vehicle speed sensor, a throttle opening sensor, and a controller. The controller causes the automatic transmission to upshift on the basis of a first upshift line when the temperature of transmission oil is not lower than a predetermined value and on the basis of a second upshift line when the temperature of transmission oil is lower than the predetermined value. The first upshift line is set so that the automatic transmission is caused to upshift substantially irrespective of the throttle opening when the vehicle speed exceeds a first predetermined speed in a kick-down range and the second upshift line being set so that the automatic transmission is caused to upshift substantially irrespective of the throttle opening when the vehicle speed exceeds a second predetermined speed in said kick-down range. The second predetermined speed is lower than the first predetermined speed.

  • Patent number: 5157995
Abstract: A tool having several coaxially disposed socket members housed within each other and corresponding to conventional sizes. The sockets are spring loaded, and each reduces its diameter towards the outer end that prevents the abutting sockets contained therein from falling off as a result of gravity or the spring force of the different spring members associated with each one of the sockets. The springs members urge these sockets outwardly, and the springs members of the sockets that are smaller than the head of the bolt or screw being matched are overcome and retracted, thereby the matching socket cooperatively engages with the head. Corresponding covers provide the necessary support area for the springs to exert their force against their corresponding socket members. An upper master socket assembly is removably mounted to the larger socket member, and it provides suitable engagement for a crank or lever to produce the necessary torque to rotate the socket members.
