  • Patent number: 5388282
Abstract: A pneumatic assisted flush system for toilets having a raised water storage tank and a flush valve discharging into a toilet bowl, characterized by a primary air seal at the rim of the toilet bowl and a secondary air seal established in a flush passage during flushing, whereby the toilet bowl is converted into a closed chamber for the entrapment of air compressed by the discharge of flush water, thereby depressing debris laden water in the toilet bowl in order to initiate syphoning through a flush pipe and into a sewer.

  • Patent number: 5388284
Abstract: A combination floating thermal pool cover and high efficiency thermal pool cover retaining device is disclosed having a flexible clamping portion for clinging to an extended edge of a pool and a retaining portion for lifting a small portion of the thermal pool cover off of localized turbulent surface areas of the pool created by underwater jets that can potentially remove larger portions of the thermal pool cover from contact with the surface area of the pool. By lifting small portions of the thermal pool cover off of these localized turbulent surface areas of the pool, the net effect is to maximize the total surface area of the thermal pool cover in communication with the pool surface. Moreover, by keeping the maximum amount of the thermal pool cover in contact with the water surface area of the pool, the pool water is heated more quickly and the amount of debris which falls into the pool is minimized.

  • Patent number: 5388285
Abstract: A waterfall for swimming pools has a first configuration as a waterfall and a second configuration as a water spray. Both configurations include a water accumulation box having a spiral water inlet chamber that receives water from the circulating water pump. The spiral configuration removes turbulence from the water so that the waterfall produces a smooth sheet of water. A rotary diverter valve positioned within a nonrotatable cylinder has a hand wheel at its opposite ends so that a pool user may adjust its rotary position. In a first position, a first plenum in the rotary diverter valve aligns with an interconnecting plenum that interconnects the water accumulation box and a water outlet slot to produce the waterfall, and in a second position, a plurality of smaller orifices align with the water outlet slot to produce a water spray effect.

  • Patent number: 5388288
Abstract: A plumbing fitting serving both as a test closure and a trap bushing for a T-fitting. The test and trap fitting comprises a tubular member of circular cross section having an open end and an integrally closed end. The fitting can be inserted through an opening in a wall (if present) and into the intermediate port of a T-fitting constituting a pan of a soil pipe and a vent pipe assembly. The test and trap fitting has an outside diameter such that it is received in the intermediate port of the T-fitting with close tolerance, enabling a fluid-tight connection to be made in any appropriate manner such as by solvent welding. The test and trap fitting serves as a closure for the intermediate port of the T-fitting enabling pressure testing of the plumbing system, or the maintenance of head of water therein. The test and trap fitting can be cut substantially flush with the wall and serves as bushing to which a plumbing fixture trap can be connected in fluid-tight fashion by solvent welding and the like.

  • Patent number: 5388289
Abstract: A knockdown, portable combination wheelchair and lift which is readily assembled and disassembled, thereby enabling convenient stowage and transport when not in use. The invention breaks down into a base, a chair, a footrest for the chair, and a boom having a sling. The base is U-shaped, having front casters and rear wheels. A mast projects vertically from the base, and can be folded down, parallel with the legs of the U, during disassembly. The chair mounts on the mast, and folds for compact stowage. A boom having winch, chain, and sling is supported by telescoping fit into the mast, and can raise and lower a passenger seated on the sling. This enables the chair portion to be removed, the lift now being able to penetrate a motor vehicle, and deposit the passenger therein. Both the boom and the chair are removable from the remaining components, so that the invention is selectively configured alternatively as a wheelchair or a lift.

Abstract: The invention provides a method for making an organism deposit-inhibition pipe, which excels in corrosion resistance, dispenses with maintenance work, and offers no toxicity problems. A thin sheet comprising a copper alloy is wound spirally around a round bar and inserted into a resin pipe made up of an electrical insulating material. And the round bar is taken out. The obtained pipe has an inner wall which is covered with the copper thin sheet. The copper alloy has a Be content of 0.2 to 2.8% by weight, and is selected from, e.g., Be--Cu, Be--Co--Cu, Be--Co--Si--Cu and Be--Ni--Cu alloys. The beryllium-copper alloy has a remarkable antifouling effect and provides a continued liberation of copper ions.

  • Patent number: 5388320
Abstract: Duplex layers of carbon fibre each comprising a lower portion of uni-directional filaments and an upper staple fibre portion are laid one on top of the other in an annular form. Needles are reciprocated through the layers to cause the staple fibre to be pushed downwardly to interconnect the layers. The base supporting the layers being assembled is gradually lowered until there comes a time when the bottom of the needle stroke no longer passes through all of the layers. At that time additional layers comprising staple fibre only are added and needled down into the stack to enrich the lower layers. After that enrichment the stack is then built up by adding further duplex layers. When all of the duplex layers have been added, further staple fibres may be added to the stop of the stack and needled in order to enrich the upper layers with interconnecting staple fibres, which upper layers would otherwise be deficient in interconnecting staple fibre.

  • Patent number: 5388322
Abstract: A shatterproof pressure vessel for storing pressurized gas used in a hybrid-type air bag inflator until the gas is expanded for inflating an air bag, is formed of a thin wall, metal tube made by extruding a metal ring axially through a constricted die orifice to provide an elongated tube. The extrusion generally aligns the metal grain structure into a generally elongated, axially oriented fiber-like configuration. End closures are secured to the opposite ends of the tube to form the sealed pressure vessel. One end closure is openable to receive an ejection from a solid propellant means which is actuated for heating and expanding the gas within the vessel. The opposite end closure is openable to release the expanding gas into a vehicle occupant restraining air bag for inflation of the bag.

  • Patent number: 5388325
Abstract: A core chip for a magnetic head core slider, including a first and a second core member which are bonded together so as to define a coil-winding aperture. The two core members cooperate to provide a gap-forming portion defining a magnetic gap on one side of the coil-winding aperture, and a cut-off portion provided adjacent to the gap-forming portion. The cut-off portion is removed by grinding at the top surface to establish the nominal depth of the magnetic gap. The cut-off portion has a distance marker which extends from the top surface down to the gap-forming portion and which has an end portion adjacent to the gap-forming portion. The end portion is shaped so as to indicate a distance between the top surface and the gap-forming portion, that is, the depth of the magnetic gap, when the cut-off portion is removed to provide a sliding surface of the core chip in which the magnetic gap is open. Also disclosed is a process of fabricating the magnetic head core slider using the core chip.

  • Patent number: 5388327
Abstract: A technique for simultaneously forming large numbers of solder ball (or bump) contacts on a surface of a substrate is described. A dissolvable film carrier is provided with holes arranged in a shape to correspond to an array of contact pads on a substrate. The holes are filled with solder. The film carrier retains the solder. The carrier is placed over the surface of the substrate and is heated, causing the solder to re-flow and to wet and to adhere to the contact pads. The carrier, which resists the re-flow temperature, maintains the shape of the solder contacts while cooling. After cooling, the film carrier can be removed from around the solder contacts with a suitable solvent.
