  • Patent number: 6173864
Abstract: A system for accurately dispensing controlled amounts of viscous material. The system includes a pressurized supply of the viscous material, a dispenser connected with the pressurized supply and a feedback control for ensuring that a discrete dispensed amount corresponds closely to the desired dispensed amount for a particular application. The different methods of feedback control include changing pressure of the pressurized supply after measuring a dispensed amount and comparing the dispensed amount with a stored value representing the desired amount. Another manner of feedback control includes changing an air operating pressure associated with the dispenser. A third type of feedback control includes adjusting the duration that the dispenser is maintained on to dispense the viscous material. Each of these types of feedback control are preferably used in succession, as necessary, to ensure that the desired amount of viscous material is discharged from the dispenser.

Abstract: In method for forming a ball on a bonding wire, the tip end of the bonding wire that extends from a capillary is bent toward a discharge electrode, and the capillary is moved obliquely so that the tip end of the tail of the bonding wire faces the discharge electrode, and then an electric discharge is performed between the discharge electrode and the tip end of the wire, thus forming a ball on the tip end of the wire.

  • Patent number: 6173887
Abstract: A method of making an electrically conductive contact on a substrate by applying a layer of solder paste to a circuitized feature on a substrate and selectively heating and melting the solder paste over the feature to form a solder bump. The excess solder paste is removed. A focused energy heat source such as a laser beam or focused Infrared heats the solder paste. In another embodiment, a reflective mask with apertures may be used to allow focused heating source to selectively melt areas of the solder paste layer applied to a circuitized feature. In yet another embodiment, a reflective mask with apertures filled with solder paste is applied onto a substrate and then heated to cause localized solder melting. The mask and excess solder paste are removed.

  • Patent number: 6173888
Abstract: A mailing form, including an upper sheet of material adhesively fastened to a lower sheet, is configured for the printing of information on a single side during passage of the form through a non-impact printer. The upper and lower sheets are fastened together permanently at one end, forming a pocket to be used as a return envelope. The portion of the upper sheet which extends away from this pocket is divided into an inner flap, on which information is printed, and an outer flap, which is temporarily fastened to the lower sheet in order to protect an adhesive pattern during the printing process. After the printing process, the outer flap is removed and discarded, the inner flap is folded along lines provided for folding, and the lower sheet is folded on itself to enclose the inner flap. As the adhesive pattern holds the lower sheet shut in this position, address and return address information printed on the inner flap is visible through apertures in the lower sheet, which forms an envelope.

  • Patent number: 6173891
Abstract: A system for creating, dispensing, and redeeming electronic discount coupons in a store. The system includes a “smart card”, product stations adjacent to selected products in the store, and a checkout station in the checkout area. To create an electronic coupon, the customer inserts the card into the product station adjacent to an product the customer wishes to purchase, and the product station then writes an electronic coupon onto the card. The customer thus shops throughout the store collecting electronic coupons for products of interest. Upon completion of shopping, the customer redeems the electronic coupons at the checkout area, by inserting the card into the checkout station. During checkout, when UPC data matches data stored on the card, the customer is credited with the value of the corresponding coupon. Periodically, the electronic coupon data is transferred to a remote clearing house.

Abstract: By linking together a first set of identification information and a second set of identification information, and by creating a database linking together manufacturing information, sales information, and distribution information with the first identification information as a keyword, the burden on the user of controlling manufacturing can be lightened by, for example, the manufacturing information side informing the sales information side that the product renewal date is approaching. Further, a response can rapidly be made to demands from the user, and steps rapidly taken (i.e. transmitted to the manufacturing process and put into practice) to meet those demands.

Abstract: A plurality of scan lines is used to detect characteristic features of a checkerboard structure or similar pattern structure of symbology within a field of view. The scan lines cross leading edges of the symbology which provides signals to a plurality of processors. The processors detect instances wherein sequential leading edges exhibit angular shifts corresponding to a pattern of the symbology. A further processor is used to detect when a coincidence of these angular shifts occur, thereby providing an indication of the location of the symbology within the field of view.

  • Patent number: 6173894
Abstract: An optical or symbol reader including CMOS circuitry preferably integrated on a single chip. A CMOS optical reader chip comprises a CMOS imaging array having a plurality of pixels each with a dedicated pixel-site circuit. Charge is accumulated at each pixel location transferred upon demand to a common bus. In a preferred embodiment, exposure time of the imaging array is controlled using a feedback loop. One or more exposure control pixels are positioned adjacent to or within the imaging array and receive light along with the imaging array. The charge of the exposure control pixel or pixels is measured against a threshold level, and the amount of time taken to reach the threshold level determines the time exposure of the pixels of the imaging array. CMOS signal processing circuitry is employed which, in combination with the exposure control circuitry, minimizes time-to-read over a large range of light levels, while performing spatially optimal filtering.

Abstract: A flexible scan element for scanning a light beam, and methods for making and actuating the scan element. The scan element includes a first leaf that is rigidly affixed to a substrate, a second leaf having a mirror affixed thereto, and a flexible hinge that couples the first leaf to the second leaf. The second leaf is moveable and pivots about an axis of the flexible hinge. The first leaf is coupled to the second leaf solely by the flexible hinge, and the flexible hinge is formed solely from an elastomer material. The first and second leaves are preferably formed from flat rigid metal, and optionally include bonding flanges that couple the leaves to the elastomeric hinge forming material. The mirror is affixed on one side of the second leaf and a magnet is optionally affixed on the opposite side of the second leaf. The scan element optionally includes tabs for mounting the device to a flat substrate or circuit board, and, in one embodiment has a resonant frequency in the range of 20 Hz-100 Hz.

  • Patent number: 6173897
Abstract: Card and Card Reader contain a broadly m-shaped or twin looped antenna consisting of one or more thin conducting layers between plastic laminates wherein the middle branch 18 oscillates in anti-phase with the two outer branches 16 and 17 for proximity coupling applications, whereas all the said three branches oscillate in phase in distant read/write applications. The prevailingly capacitive positions 15, 13, 14 of the antenna can be utilised for card readers where it is preferred to draw a card through a slot into the interior of a sensor unit where the card may be tested, processed, or if need be, withdrawn. Capacitive transfer may be also useful in cases where the temporary clipping of the card to a piece of equipment will unite its data base to a digital system. The instructive component can best be utilized in informal proximity presentations of the card to a Reader area; and its electromagnetic manifestation can best be used in card identifications a distance of several meters.
