Abstract: A cantilevered mobile bed/chair apparatus for safely transferring a patient from and to a hospital type bed comprises three hinged together segments forming back, seat and foot platforms operating in conjunction with a four wheeled, rectangular base. The hinged together platforms convert from a fully adjustable chair mode to a bed mode by a first jack located beneath the seat platform. The platforms are raised and lowered by a second jack associated with a telescoping tower attached to an E frame. The telescoping tower is mounted vertically from one side of the rectangular base, and when extended, has a height greater than a hospital bed. The E frame, which supports the platforms, is cantilevered horizontally from the top portion of the telescoping tower, and the height thereof is controlled by the second jack mounted together with the bottom portion of the telescoping tower, to the wheeled base. The side edges of the platforms are beveled or angled downward.

Abstract: An air massager cushioning device that not only support a weight of an individual who sits or rests on the air massager cushioning device with minimal surface tension but also creates a massaging effect on the body part of the individual positioned on the cushioning device. The cushioning device has first and second air support structures, where each support structure has alternating offset air glands. One of the two support structures has alternating apertures, wherein the alternating air glands of one of the two support structures are respectively inserted into the alternating offset apertures to form a matrix surface arrangement of the cushioning device. The air cushioning device creates a massaging effect by rapidly inflating the air glands of one of the two support structures while rapidly deflating the air glands of the other one of the two support structures, thereby creating a massaging effect.

Abstract: A bed construction having a one-sided mattress assembly supported on a rigid foundation. The one-sided mattress assembly includes a core of pocketed coil springs having a layer of resiliently compressible material covering the upper surface thereof and having a bottom surface constructed of a substantially rigid material without a compressible layer. The core of coil springs is attached to the bottom surface around its periphery. The foundation has a rigid inner construction and a noncompressible top layer. The bed construction reduces the amount of compressible padding in the mattress by one-half and consequently the mattress is capable of exhibiting a substantial reduction in the amount of permanent deflection in use.

Abstract: A method of banding the mane of a horse is described as well as the apparatus for performing the method. The method of banding the mane of the horse is made possible by a staple gun having generally U-shaped staples provided therein which are stapled around individual groups of hairs. The method comprises the steps of separating the horse's mane into individual mane groups and at least partially encircling each mane group with a selectively removable staple to maintain the mane groups separate from one another.

Abstract: The invention is embodied in a closed-cycle lubrication oil system used during turbine start-up to provide both lift oil and hydraulic oil from one system using a single variable volume pump that supplies fluid at a high pressure for lift oil requirements. The pump discharge pressure is reduced, through a pressure regulating/reducing valve, down to hydraulic system demands. During steady-state gas turbine operation, the system provides only a flow of hydraulic oil to position the inlet guide vanes and gas valves as required by the gas turbine controls logic. During gas turbine shut-down, the system again meets both lift oil and hydraulic oil requirements. A second pump is advantageously incorporated in the preferred embodiments of the system to provide 100% redundancy in providing either lift or hydraulic oil.

Abstract: Where gas turbine engine structure eg combustion equipment, is to be air impingement cooled, the surface which receives the air jets is so shaped as to produce boundary layer separation zones 34, 38 and 44 in the cooling air, as it spreads across the surface. Mixing of the boundary layer with the remainder of the air flow results, followed by the reestablishment of the boundary layer. The new boundary layer is cooler than the original layer and so provides more effective cooling.

Abstract: The invention relates to extended life thermal packs. In one embodiment, the thermal pack comprises a container having a first thermally reactive chemical solute therein, a rupturable solvent packet containing a solvent, and a rupturable solute packet containing a second thermally reactive chemical solute in the solute packet. The solutes are chemically separated until time of use and are different from one another. The chemical separation of solutes until time of use in combination with the structure of the thermal pack structure afford both extended duration of thermal effect by the pack and afford the user with increased control by permitting optional sequential combination of the reactants. The thermal reaction produced by the combination of solute and solvent can be either endothermic or exothermic and therefore can be used to apply cold or hot therapy, respectively.

The liquid portion is subcooled in heat exchange with the overhead vapour from the fractionation column, expanded, evaporated to provide refrigeration at a low temperature level, and fed to the fractionation column. The rewarmed residual vapour is subsequently compressed to a pressure suitable for export, with a portion of the compressed gas being cooled, condensed and recycled back to reflux the top section of the fractionation column.

Abstract: A method and apparatus is taught for preheating of glass batch materials by direct contact with glass furnace exhaust gases. Furnace gases 15 flow through a batch hopper 1 in horizontal tunnels formed by open bottom tubes 6, with a free surface of batch forming the bottom portion of the tunnel. The tubes are electrically grounded and a high voltage discharge electrode 18 is located axially in each tunnel. The corona discharge from the electrode acts to retain batch and prevent it's entrainment into the flowing gases. Particulate matter from the gases is simultaneously precipitated onto the batch surface. Acidic gas components such as SO2, HCl, and HF are chemically reacted with batch constituents, thereby removing them from the gas stream. Heat is transferred from the gases to the batch by direct contact. Cooled gases 16 exit the hopper, cleaned of pollutants to levels in compliance with strict environmental regulations.
