Abstract: A method for preparing a surface includes providing an article having an article surface, thereafter first processing the article surface to establish a first residual compressive stress state and a first surface roughness in the article surface, and thereafter second processing the article surface by surface compressive texturing to establish a second residual compressive stress state and a second surface roughness in the article surface. The second surface roughness is quantitatively less than the first surface roughness, and substantially no material is removed from the article surface in the step of second processing.

Abstract: A method of manufacturing a unitary seamless section of an aircraft fuselage comprises disposing a thin lay-up mandrel element onto the outer shell surface of a cylindrical inner mandrel shell, thereby forming a mandrel with a lay-up surface. A plurality of resin impregnated stiffener fibers may be layed-up within a plurality of stiffener channels in the lay-up surface to form a plurality of stiffeners or stringers. The method further includes laying up a plurality of resin impregnated skin fibers onto the lay-up surface while the mandrel rotates to form a unitary pre-cured section of an aircraft fuselage.

Abstract: An aerofoil assembly, for example a bladed rotor assembly (40B) comprises a rotor (42) carrying a plurality of rotor blades (44), at least one of the rotor blades (44) having a coating (46) on the surface of the rotor blade (44). At least one of the rotor blades (44) has a coating (46) having a different thickness, a different area of contact with the surface of the rotor blade (44), a different position of contact on the surface of the rotor blade (44), a different shape of contact on the surface of the rotor blade (44) and/or a different composition compared to at least one of the other rotor blades (44). The coating (46) is applied in a non-uniform manner to reduce the vibration level of the rotor blade (44), or rotor blades (44), with the highest vibration response for a given excitation by changing the bladed rotor assembly (40B) mode shapes and the relative vibration of the rotor blades (44).

Abstract: In a method of forming bent heat dissipating unit, the following steps are included: putting a plurality of radiating fins on and around a straight heat pipe to form a heat dissipating unit; engaging the heat dissipating unit with a forming die assembly, so that a plurality of locating die units sequentially arranged on a carrier of the assembly are separately positioned in a space between two adjacent radiating fins; pressing the engaged heat dissipating unit and forming die assembly against a forming block; and driving a processing machine connected to the carrier of the forming die assembly to change the arrangement of the locating die units and thereby bend the heat dissipating unit to a shape corresponding to a profile of the forming block. An apparatus for forming the bent heat dissipating unit through the above steps is also provided.

Abstract: A level wound coil (LWC) having a plurality of coil layers each of which has a pipe wound in alignment winding and in traverse winding. The LWC has a shift section where the pipe is shifted from the m-th coil layer to the (m+1)-th coil layer on a bottom surface thereof when the LWC is disposed on a mount surface. The shift section has the k-th shift section on inner layer side and the (k+1)-th shift section on outer layer side, where a start point of the (k+1)-th shift section does not transit, relative to a start point of the k-th shift section, to a direction reverse to a winding direction of the pipe. A length of the shift section that does not transit to the reverse direction is controlled.

Abstract: A method of forming a wheel disc starts with a flat blank. A plurality of windows are formed in the wheel disc, wherein each window has a respective outer edge proximate with a continuous outer band around a periphery of the wheel disc. The windows define a plurality of spokes between adjacent windows, and the angular size of each of the windows along the outer band is preferably greater than the angular size of each of the spokes. The outer band is partially closed toward a cylindrical shape by engaging a cam die against at least a portion of the outer band. The outer band is substantially fully closed into a cylindrical shape by axially wiping the outer band using a cylindrical die. The intermediate camming operation achieves the desired final shape after wiping without introducing stresses that would weaken or distort the wheel disc.

Abstract: A system and method is provided for producing window components using polymer based, metallurgy based, extruded, injection molded, or wooden lineal material. The lineal material is notched at intervals calculated to include a stretch treatment and folded to form window components such as window sashes, frames, and the like. Internal reinforcing members may be welded within the joints formed by folding at the notches. The notching system and method provide low cost, highly reliable, low defect production of multi-sided window components from a continuous piece of lineal material.
