  • Patent number: 7762067
Abstract: A turbocharger having a turbine housing defining a chamber for receiving exhaust gas, and a nozzle leading from the chamber. Exhaust gas flows from the nozzle through a turbine wheel in the chamber and changes direction from a radially inward direction in the nozzle to an axial direction downstream of the turbine wheel. A divider in the nozzle divides the nozzle into first-stage and second-stage nozzles. The divider has an upstream surface to guide exhaust gas through the first-stage nozzle and an opposite downstream surface to guide exhaust gas flowing through the second-stage nozzle. An axially slidable tubular piston, disposed in the turbine housing, has a radially inner surface extending along the axial direction and a non-flat upstream end surface. The piston also includes a curved flow-guiding surface causing the exhaust gas to change direction. In a closed position, the piston abuts the divider to close the second-stage nozzle.

  • Patent number: 7762068
Abstract: An air flow amount passing through a centrifugal compressor is acquired on the basis of outputs of an air flow meter. A surge limit compressor rotation speed is acquired on the basis of the obtained air flow amount passing through the compressor. A current compressor rotation speed (turbo rotation speed) is acquired by a turbo rotation speed sensor. A rotation speed of the compressor is controlled on the basis of the surge limit compressor rotation speed and the current compressor rotation speed. More specifically, while being limited so as to be equal or less than the surge limit compressor rotation speed, a target compressor rotation speed is controlled so as to be a value according to the operating conditions, such as accelerator opening and engine speed, of an internal combustion engine. In addition, the surge of the compressor is judged on the basis of the surge limit compressor rotation speed and the current compressor rotation speed.

  • Patent number: 7762078
Abstract: Nozzles that offer shape variability to maintain or purposely change the pressure drop across the throat are obtained by constructing the nozzles with components that change their shape, angle, or curvature in response to temperature changes that occur during the flow of combustion products through the nozzle. The temperature change may be the gradual heating of the nozzle wall from hot combustion gases, and the shape change may result in a decrease in the throat diameter or an expansion of the throat diameter. A decrease in throat diameter will be useful when the depletion of propellant as burning proceeds causes a drop in the pressure or flow rate of the combustion gas and there is a need to compensate for this drop to maintain the pressure drop across the throat. An increase in throat diameter will be useful when an initial high thrust is no longer needed and depletion of the fuel by itself is insufficient to lower the thrust to its desired reduced level.

  • Patent number: 7762080
Abstract: A system and method for accurately supplying fuel flow to a gas turbine engine from a fuel metering pump regardless of variations in operating conditions of the fuel metering pump. The system determines an updated flow characteristic curve for an electrically powered positive displacement pump that is configured to supply fluid via a valve that is configured to open at a predetermined fluid inlet pressure. Electrical current is supplied to the pump to thereby cause the pump to supply the fluid to the valve. The electrical current supplied to the pump is monitored to determine when the valve opens, and one or more points on the updated flow characteristic curve are determined based on the determination of when the valve opens.

  • Patent number: 7762085
Abstract: A turbine engine particularly suited for VTOL aircraft is disclosed. According to various embodiments, the core of the turbine engine includes two spools—a low pressure (LP) spool and a high pressure (HP) spool—where the LP spool is independently mounted remote to the HP spool. The power output from the engine can be modulated from high levels to low levels and vice versa through control of the air flow through the engine using the modulation diverter valve assembly. In lift mode operation both the LP and HP spools may be operational, while during the forward flight cruise mode of operation the HP spool is operational and the LP spool may or may not be operational depending upon the power required for the flight condition. For HP spool only operation, the LP spool may be shut down using the modulation diverter valve assembly and an inlet flow diverter valve assembly.

  • Patent number: 7762094
Abstract: In a refrigeration cycle system, temperature sensors measure the temperatures Tin and Tout of a refrigerant at the entrance and exit of an evaporator. A control circuit performs PID calculation based on signals from the temperature sensors in order to control a degree of superheat corresponding to the difference between the temperatures Tin and Tout at the entrance and exit to an aimed value, and calculates an operation amount for the opening degree of an expansion valve. In a case where the operation amount exceeds the limit of realizable velocity of driving an actuator that actuates the expansion valve, the control circuit performs a limiter process for limiting the operation amount so as not to exceed the limit value. The control circuit drives the actuator by using the operation amount after subjected to the limiter process, thereby to stably control the opening degree of the expansion valve.

Subsequently a protective gas is produced from the compressed air by a gas producer (3) and is supplied to the showcase interior (7), the gas producer (3) being able to be accommodated within or outwith the showcase. In this way, provision of a supply container for the protective gas is avoided.

Abstract: A temperature control vest for use in providing cooling for workers subject to extreme temperature work environments. The temperature control vest includes chest-covering pieces and a back-covering piece that are connected by adjustable straps that run over the shoulders of the user and lacing assemblies that pass around the sides of the user. The chest covering and back covering pieces each have one or more detachable panels mounted on their interior surfaces that include compartments holding built-in ice sheets composed of refrigerant cubes for providing cooling to the user. The panels are releasably attached to the chest-covering pieces and back-covering piece so that the panels and the ice sheets can be quickly removed and replaced when the ice becomes melted. The compartments in the panels include fabric mesh layers along their inside surfaces for holding the replaceable ice sheets in contact with the user for cooling and heating purposes while providing a pleasing visual appearance.

Abstract: A first and a second expansion and compression machine (30, 40) having different volume ratios (Vc/Ve) are connected in parallel to a refrigerant circuit (10) of a refrigeration apparatus. Expanders (31, 41) of the expansion and compression machines (30, 40) are connected in parallel. Compressors (32, 42) of the expansion and compression machines (30, 40) are also connected in parallel. Upon variation in the operating condition of the refrigeration apparatus, the ratio of rotation speed between the expansion and compression machines (30, 40) is controlled by a controller (60). This, as a result, allows the refrigeration apparatus to operate at a COP close to an ideal condition.

Abstract: Improved structures of cooling systems that may be used in air conditioning or refrigeration are described. To achieve a high efficiency in converting cooling effect from one or more cooling units, antifreeze liquid used to absorb the cooling effect is forced to pass through a box or container made out of graphite or thermally conductive metal or alloy holding a sponge-like structure or foam, also made out of graphite or thermally conductive metal or alloy, where the foam including open cells provides maximum surface contact with the liquid. Further the liquid is sprayed or vaporized onto the foam and passes through the foam by gravity or pressure. The cooled liquid is exited from the container for use in air conditioning or refrigeration.
