  • Patent number: 9149022
Abstract: Systems, methods, and computer code products for monitoring the behavior, health, and/or characteristics of an animal are disclosed herein. In one implementation, the animal is positioned inside a waste container placed on a system that is adapted to determine, record and communicate over a network various animal health parameters. These parameters can be processed to determine trends, statistics and changes of animal physiological functions. The results can be used to access animal health conditions and issue warnings, alarms, messages, and other notifications to designated caretakers. These notifications may be displayed using various means such as computers and/or mobile devices. Data retrieval and review capability can provide improved understanding of an animal's health conditions and facilitate early illness detection.

  • Patent number: 9149028
Abstract: The present invention relates in general to fishing lures, and more specifically, to a contracting fishing lure that provides life-like movement to mimic live bait. The fishing lure is configured so that when the fishing lure is retrieved (e.g., reeled in) or jigged by an angler, or the fishing line is pulled or twitched, the fishing lure transitions from a first non-contracted position to a second contracted position. The purpose of the invention is to provide a fishing lure that will successfully attract fish by displaying a unique action in the water.

  • Patent number: 9149030
Abstract: This is a new method in detection and control of subterranean termites. This method involves building underground stations. To build a station, dig a small area (e.g, 18?×18?) of ground about 1? to 4? deep; then place termite feed or bait or mix of them on the bottom; cover with a plastic sheet; and finally cover it with soil, mulch, or turf. Cardboard can be used as feed among other choices. This method is very effective because the plastic sheet can keep moisture from escaping and preserve the feed/bait. Also when termites are foraging to find food, they will be stopped by the plastic sheet and be gathered there. The layer above the plastic sheet provides good insulation to disturbance. Larger size of the station than a traditional baiting container also helps termites to find the station more quickly and more reliably.

  • Patent number: 9149036
Abstract: A method for sanitizing and disinfecting a surface using an aqueous solution of chitosan. The aqueous solution is heated to convert the aqueous solution to a steam vapor containing chitosan. The surface is treated with the steam, thereby disinfecting the surface and simultaneously depositing the chitosan from the steam onto the surface. The steam will also penetrate porous surfaces. An antimicrobial film of chitosan is thereby formed on the surface. The steam vapor sterilizes the surface and the chitosan film inhibits growth of bacteria and other microbes on the surface for several months. The steam containing the chitosan can be generated from an aqueous solution of chitosan heated in standard commercial and home-use steam generators. This chitosan vapor steam treatment of surfaces can be used on any hard surface or soft surface.

  • Patent number: 9149045
Abstract: An oil-in-water emulsion that is environmentally friendly and also exhibits antimicrobial activity is provided. More specifically, the oil phase of the emulsion includes a botanical oil derived from a plant (e.g., thymol, carvacrol, etc.). Because the botanical oil tends to leach out of the emulsion during storage and before it is used in the desired application, a water-dispersible polymer is also employed in the aqueous phase of the emulsion to enhance long term stability of the oil and, in turn, antimicrobial efficacy. Without intending to be limited by theory, it is believed that the water-dispersible polymer can effectively encapsulate the botanical oil within the emulsion and inhibit its premature release. Once the emulsion is formed, water can then be removed so that it becomes a substantially anhydrous concentrate. In this manner, the water-dispersible polymer will not generally disperse before use and prematurely release the botanical oil.

Abstract: A method of processing food elements of plant tissue having a cellular structure with substantial starch content comprising arranging the food elements in an aqueous liquid and applying acoustic energy with a selected frequency energy and time profile to modify the cellular structure of a surface portion of the food elements by removing components from the cellular structure and establishing a pectin based surface portion surrounding a core portion and adapted to act as a barrier in a high temperature subsequent cooking process, the modified cellular structure providing for a relatively low moisture surface portion to be established and maintained and moisture to be substantially retained in the core portion after subsequent cooking processes.

  • Patent number: 9149064
Abstract: The invention provides a method for making nanofibrillar cellulose with high absorptivity to fat and cholate. According to the invention, dietary fiber material is activated by steam flash explosion and hydrolyzed sequentially by xylanase, laccase and cellulase. Nanofibrillar cellulose is obtained by subjecting the hydrolyzed fiber to high pressure homogenization. Nanofibrillar cellulose is further modified by octenyl succinic anhydride or glycidyl methacrylate to increase its ability to absorb fat and cholate. The method of the invention is safe, clean and environment-friendly. It avoids using toxic reagents, strong acids and bases in the process of preparing nanofibrillar cellulose, making it safe to be used as dietary products. The nanofibrillar cellulose made by the invented method has an oil absorption rate of 20-35 g/g, a water absorption rate of 20-30 g/g, expansivity of 40-70 mL/g, and sodium deoxycholate absorption rate of 0.01-0.2 mmoL/100 mg.
