Abstract: An intervertebral insert member and an instrument for positioning the insert in a space between vertebral bodies in vivo. The insert member is advanced by the instrument into a prepared site located between adjacent vertebral bodies. Upon reaching the appropriate insertion point, the sleeve is retracted and a pivotal motion is imparted to the insert. The insert member is pivotally attached to the distal end of the delivery instrument such that it can be articulated about a pivot point that is located on the insert member until it is properly positioned. The positioning instrument is then released from the insert member and removed from the space between the vertebral bodies. An adjustment screw is available to expand the surfaces of the insert member by displacement of a wedge member within the insert.

Abstract: A method is used for aligning an acetabular cup insertion instrument by taking a single lateral view pre-operative digital x-ray of a standing patient's pelvis. The natural pelvic tilt angle is determined by locating an anterior pelvic plane (APP) which is defined by first, second and third points on the anterior of the pelvis and determining the angle between the APP and a coronal plane perpendicular to the surface on which the patient is standing. The patient is then placed on a surface of an operating room table in a supine position. A position tracking device is placed on the patient's pelvis to track movement. Thereafter an operating room navigation or orientation system is used to relocate the APP defined by the first, second and third points. A cup insertion instrument having a position tracking device thereon is oriented using the navigation or orientation system.

Abstract: A detachable urine flow collection device that integrates with a disposable nonwoven or underwear garment worn by a human male or female. The incontinence device fits through an opening in the disposable nonwoven or underwear garment. The incontinence device is ellipsoid in shape and will be in direct and intimate contact with the users' genitals. This design allows the incontinence device to collect urine when the user urinates in different body positions. The main purpose of the incontinence devise is to channel this urine and liquid away from contact with the user and their skin as the constant contact of the liquid and urine is harmful. The channeling of urine and liquid away from the users skin is accomplished by the design of the incontinence device and the combinations of nonwoven materials that direct, move and store the urine and liquid in the device.

Abstract: A method and an alignment system which auto-levels and/or auto-centers a loading platform (104) to load and unload a wheeled stretcher (106) to and from an emergency transport vehicle (100) are disclosed. A controller (114) of the alignment system receives a command to extend the loading platform from the emergency vehicle and extends the loading platform under power from the emergency transport vehicle. The controller recognizes an approaching wheeled stretcher, and aligns automatically the loading platform with a leading edge of the approaching wheeled stretcher to compensate automatically for any alignment issues between the loading platform and loading wheels (130) of the wheeled stretcher.

Abstract: Bed, comprising a lower frame (1) and an upper frame (2) with a supporting surface for a mattress, and where the upper frame (2) is connected to the lower frame (1) so that the upper frame can be raised and lowered in proportion to the lower frame by means of one or more adjusting means (5, 6) driven by an electric motor. In order to prevent squeezing between the upper and lower frame when the upper frame is lowered, the bed is provided with anti squeezing means. These comprise a light source and a receiver positioned in a corner of the lower frame. The light source sends a light beam which follows the lower frame all the way around and runs just above the top side of the lower frame. When the light beam is interrupted the control unit reacts by cutting off the current for the motors.

Abstract: For each air cell, air is supplied and discharged through one of three lines independent of one another, every third cell being connected to the common line. The control unit controls inflation and deflation of air cells in turn in such an alternate manner that first the pressure of air in the air cells on the first line is increased and decreased, secondly the pressure of air in the air cells on the second line is increased and decreased, then the pressure of air in the air cells on the third line is increased and decreased. Thereafter, when the back tilt angle of the back bottom has reached a predetermined angle or greater, the control unit increases the pressure of air cells whose pressure is being lowered at that moment so as to produce an inflated mode similar to that of the other air cells. Then, while the back bottom is being raised, the control unit performs an inflation and deflation control of individual lines alternately on a cycle shorter than that in a normal control mode.
