  • Patent number: 5870950
Abstract: An automatic tie system for a baler for tying a bale of compressible material comprises a reciprocating ram for pushing the bale along a path. A continuous strand of baling wire extends generally transverse to the path and engages the bale front end and wraps around the bale as it moves along the path. A reciprocating inserter arm engages the continuous wire strand to form a partial loop at the bale back end having an apex and an upstream wire section and a downstream wire section. A first gripper arm grips the upstream loop section when the loop is cut and moves the upstream loop section generally parallel to an incoming section of wire from a baling wire supply roll to create a supply wire overlap. A second gripper arm grips the downstream loop section and moves it adjacent to the bale and generally parallel to wire from a baling wire supply roll to form a bale wire overlap.

  • Patent number: 5606909
Abstract: A plurality of wires W are caused to hang downward substantially in U-shape, such that the ends of wires W to be bound together are closely fixed. The end portions of a plurality of fixed wires W are positioned in the vertical direction by straightener 16 and holder 17 and automatically bound with tape by tape winder 18. The binding position can be determined in the vertical direction, thereby obviating the need to lay wires W over their entire lengths in the conveying direction of the production line. As a result, the distance to lay wires W can be shortened by the hanging amount of wires W, thereby considerably reducing the space required for the installation of the wire binding apparatus.

  • Patent number: 5577371
Abstract: An apparatus for hooping a package is described, in which the band in its end position, applied to the package and tensioned, defines a hooping plane which extends in the conveying direction. A band guide channel in the form of a plane, rectangular frame intersects the hooping plane at an acute angle in an intersection line at right angles to the conveying direction. The otherwise customary binding head has a stationary device for holding fast and joining the band loop ends and for separating the oncoming band, and a pivotable device separate therefrom for the insertion and pulling-back of the band. The pivotable device has a pivot axis substantially coinciding with the intersection line. On the insertion of the band into the band guide channel said pivotable device is situated in the frame plane and is pivoted into the hooping plane before or during the pulling-back of the band.

  • Patent number: 5546855
Abstract: A bale tying apparatus for use with a baling press distinguished from the prior art mechanisms in that the articulated arms which shape wire ties about a bale also incorporate elements on the ends thereof to effect the tying of the wires without engagement of the wires with positioning surfaces in the follow block of the press. Thus the tying function is made more reliable and is independent of the follow block precise positioning. A wire loop on at least one end of the wire tie remains in contact with the arm mechanism until the wire knot is made up. The apparatus may use wire loop holding devices at the ends of both arms or may use a housing carried on the end of one arm with an opening for insertion of the other end by the other arm.

  • Patent number: 5249517
Abstract: This pneumatic operated and controlled machine secures a line about nursery stock placed upon a table top to form a bundle. The line is fed from a source through an upper mechanism comprising a tensioner arranged to hold the line with a predetermined force, through a dancer arm arranged to tighten the line, and through a needle into a slot in the table top where the line end is gripped by a lower mechanism. The dancer arm pulls against the tensioner to draw the stock into a compact bundle. In a second embodiment a powered drum provides additional line tension for the upper mechanism. The needle wraps the line, the end of which the lower mechanism had gripped on the previous cycle, around the nursery stock and back into the slot, where both line ends around the bundle are adjacent to each other. The lower mechanism then pulls upon both line ends to further tighten the bundle, grips the lines, secures the lines together with a metal clip, and finally cuts the lines to free the bundle.

  • Patent number: 4265687
Abstract: A method and apparatus for wrapping a tape around an article, such as a bundle of elongate items (e.g., wires), tightening the tape, bonding layers of the tightened tape together and cutting the tape is disclosed. The apparatus or tool includes a clamshell assembly having a movable jaw that closes about the article to be strapped. Thereafter, tape, drawn from a reserve loop by a motor, is guided by a channel formed in the inner periphery of an aperture defined by the clamshell. The moving tape is spirally wrapped about the bundle of items and a latched backup foot located in the clamshell aperture. After the bundle and backup foot are encircled, by a suitable number of layers, a rack moves a plunger against the tape, causing the tape to tighten around the bundle and the backup foot. As the plunger tightens the tape, a new reserve loop is formed. Any additional tape needed to form a complete reserve loop is withdrawn from a tape supply spool.
