    Abstract: A screen printing machine has a reciprocable printing screen and below it a counter-pressure roller. Above the screen a squeegee unit is movable relative to the screen and has two vertically displaceable parallel squeegees. During movement of the screen in one direction, one of the squeegees forces ink through the screen and the other squeegee is retracted. During reverse movement the one squeegee is retracted and the other one pushes the ink pool over the screen back to the starting position. In the starting position, the one squeegee is lowered again and the other squeegee is retracted. The transfer of the ink pool from the other squeegee to the one squeegee takes place directly above the printing line which is defined by the screen in conjunction with the counter-pressure roller. The screen printing machine is provided with a control device for coordinating the movements of the squeegee unit with the movements of the printing screen.

Excess ink which is forced through clear portions of the printing screen and which extend over the edge of the workpiece, are cleaned by a cleaning assembly which includes a cleaning belt. The cleaning belt is unrolled below the printing screen and an excess ink squeegee prints the excess ink onto the cleaning belt which is then cleaned and re-rolled and the apparatus is made ready for the next printing stroke.

    Abstract: An improved screen printing apparatus for printing conductive, resistive and insulative films to the surfaces of ceramic or glass substrates. The screen printing apparatus is characterized by a carriage having a substrate to be printed resting thereon and a frame member extending about the periphery of the carriage. A mesh screen having an emulsion layer is affixed to the screen and suspended over the substrate. The improvement comprising a pair of force absorbing members attached to the carriage in a space relationship to and on opposite sides of the substrate. A pair of rolling means are attached to opposite sides of a squeegee holder with each rolling means in registration with a respective force absorbing surface. A squeegee extends from a bottom surface of the squeegee holder intermediate the rolling means. As the squeegee holder is drawn across the screen each rolling means travels along a respective force absorbing member.

    Abstract: A screen printing assembly attachable to a silk screen frame including a support frame positionable adjacent and attachable to the screen frame. A squeegee and flood bar assembly deposits and forces ink on and through the screen and onto a substrate disposed adajcent the screen. The assembly includes a mechanism movable along the support frame and the screen frame and a flexible sheet is attached to and moves with the mechanism. The flexible sheet is sealed to the support frame, and forms in part a sealed chamber in which the squeegee and flood bar assembly deposits the ink on the screen. Solvents can be sprayed into the sealed chamber which contains the solvent so that it does not escape not the atmosphere. An inert gas is injected into the chamber displacing the oxygen in it so that the ink does not dry out as rapidly, and safely maintaining the contained solvent. A method for screen printing using this sealed chamber.

    Abstract: An automatic peel control mechanism for use in a screen printing press employs a cam-driven mechanical linkage to raise the front end of the screen frame at a controlled rate to a predetermined height above the printing bed in timed relation to the motion of the carriage which transports the squeegee. The linkage includes a pair of elongated reciprocating bars which extend the length of the printing head and are connected to lifters at their forward ends to lift the front end of the printing screen. The cam is rotatably mounted upon the carriage drive shaft. The rotation of the cam is controlled by a roller chain assembly which maintains a timed relationship between the cam and the drive shaft. The initial off contact dimension and peel rate may be readily adjusted by varying the initial position and the rate of travel of the elongated bars.

Longitudinal displacement of the connector on the drive lever alters the length of the stroke of the drive lever, which alters the length of the printing stroke. The preferred means for displacing the connector includes a threaded rod which is disposed within the drive lever and which extends through a threaded bore in the connector so that rotation of the threaded rod about its longitudinal axis imparts longitudinal motion to the connector.

    Abstract: Apparatus is disclosed for the production of silk screened textile goods. Workpieces are positioned on pedestals of a conveyor at a printing station and a silk screen design is then printed thereon. Cyclical operation of the conveyor incrementally advances the printed workpieces to a "drying" station where the printed designs is converted to solid form. The ink employed is plastisol based and is converted or "dried" to solid form primarily through polymerization. The "drying" station employs a heater element which selectively emits infra-red radiation spectrally limited to a wavelength range of three to four microns, a wavelength range at which the liquid plastisol exhibits a peak of radiation absorption. Operation of the conveyor is responsive to the rate at which an operator silk screens the workpieces with means being provided to retract the heater element from its operative position if this rate falls below a predetermined pace in order to avoid over exposure of the workpiece to the infra-red radiation.

    Abstract: The basic module comprises a frame, a support which is mounted to reciprocate vertically on the frame adjacent the rear thereof, and a printing screen, which projects horizontally forwardly from the support in cantilever fashion. A cable, which is attached at one end to the support and at its opposite end to the frame, passes intermediate its ends over a plurality of pulleys, certain of which are mounted on the frame, and one of which is attached to a counterweight located beneath the frame. The weight is carried on one end of a pivotal treadle, the opposite end of which is adapted to be manipulated by the foot of an operator standing in front of the frame. Normally the weight is in a lowered position in which it causes the cable to retain the screen in an elevated position, but when the foot treadle is depressed, the weight is lifted and the screen and its support drop by gravity to their lowered positions.

    Abstract: A screen printing machine has at least one printing station wherein rotary or flat screens are used. Downstream of the printing station, there is provided a heated continuously or discontinuously driven roller over the heated jacket of which the web is trained. The web preferably consists of impermeable material. The heated roller defines a drying path. A cooling unit is disposed downstream of the drying path and is preferably defined by a cooling roller which is connected to a cooling device. A web supplying roller is mounted at the inlet of the machine and a takeup roller is mounted downstream of the cooling unit. The transport of the web may be controlled during forward movement as well as during rearward movement. The machine is compact because the cooling unit and one of the web supplying and takeup rollers are disposed at a level below the printing station.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a system for dispensing ink to a silk screen for printing thereby. A squeegee is reciprocated relative to the silk screen and each cycle of movement provides an air pulse to a counter. The counted pulses are compared with a preset number of pulses based on the actual amount of ink which is used during the printing operations. When the counted pulses are counted up to the preset number, a control signal is fed to a valve to operate a piston and cylinder assembly which is coupled to a piston to force a measured quantity of ink from a cylinder. The cylinder is fed with a supply of ink from an ink pot. A check valve in the bottom of the cylinder opens only when the ink in the cylinder is pressurized by the piston. The measured quantity of ink dispensed from the cylinder is delivered by a conduit to the silk screen.

In the known machine, the printing accuracy is not good, mainly because of variation of tension and thermal expansion of the mesh.The mesh according to the present invention consists of insulating material fibers and an electroless plating layer formed on the fibers. The plating layer preferably consists of a nickel phosphorous alloy. A squeezing means for forcing the printing ink to pass through a printing pattern and/or a printing base for mounting an article to be printed are provided with a heating means. One of the advantages of the present invention is a high printing accuracy.

    Abstract: An automated screener in which print and flood squeegees are sequentially driven across a stencil screen framed in a chase. After a print stroke, the print squeegee is retracted and the chase is raised a short distance to make contact with the flood squeegee, which is driven in a flood stroke, whereupon the chase is raised further to an open position for removal of the stenciled workpiece. Means are provided for adjusting the print and flood squeegees and for limiting upward movement to predetermined levels during operation of the screener. Particular details relate to an arm carrying the print and flood squeegees over the chase screen. To prevent relative vertical movement between the chase and arm, both are pivoted around a common axis. Translation of the arm across the chase is accomplished by connection to a motor drive chain by means of a hingedly connected pin bearing member which permits the arm to be readily released from the chain when the arm is swung away from the chase.

    Abstract: The specification discloses a method for screen printing comprising providing a sheet of masking sized to cover a porous printing screen, with pressure sensitive adhesive on one side of the masking and a protective cover sheet thereover. The masking is positioned, cover side up on a work surface, and the desired pattern is scribed on the cover sheet with a pointed instrument, so as to form an indentation in the masking which is visible from the front side thereof. The masking is then turned over on the work surface, front side up, and is cut along the indentation. The cover sheet is peeled from the back side of the masking, thereby removing the enclosed, cut areas from the masking to form a mask or stencil corresponding to the desired pattern. The stencil is then pressed onto the lower side of the printing screen to attach the same to the screen.

A drying station is located at the end of the printing stations and includes a silicone rubber heater which can be brought into direct contact or close proximity with the platen surface to dry the screening ink or dye. Once the drying cycle is completed, the carriers are discharged on a second, return track to be returned to the loading and unloading end of the machine where the operator can unload the carrier and replace the completed workpiece with a new workpiece.

    Abstract: In a screen printing press having a squeegee and flood bar mounted on a movable support carriage, a movable actuator means is provided by the present invention which includes a pivotal lever having a brake pad on its upper end to firmly engage an upper braking surface at the point of transition from the flood mode to the print mode and vice versa in response to change in direction of movement of the carriage, for securing the carriage in a fixed position while the squeegee and flood bars shift position in preparation for the print or flood stroke.

The directly opposed squeegees are mounted on a common reciprocable carriage for conjoint movement such that printing on opposite sides of the web is effected synchronously. In preferred forms, a web drive is provided for incrementally advancing the web between the stencils and for holding the web under tension during printing.

    Abstract: A screen printing apparatus is provided, having a table on which the blank to be printed may be placed, and with the screen being brought into overlying relation to the blank for engagement of the screen by a squeegee for forcing through the screen, ink that has been applied to the screen, onto the work, with the squeegee generally downwardly pressing the screen a predetermined amount, to engagement with the work, as the squeegee traverses the screen from one end to the other. The screen is pivotally mounted at one end, and the other end is upwardly liftable to peel-off the screen from the work, as the squeegee traverses, so that those portions of the screen through which ink has already been applied to the work may be physically removed from the work to prevent smearing of ink on the work, as well as to prevent distortion. The upward movement of the screen away from the work is synchronized with the traversal of the squeegee across the screen.

    Abstract: A flood bar actuator for initiating the flood cycle in a universal screen printing machine is described. The squeegee assembly is mounted for vertical movement relative to the screen. The flood bar assembly is mounted adjacent the squeegee assembly, with an inner end fixedly mounted to an accessory support, and an outer end pivotally attached to the inner end. A peg extending from the squeegee assembly forces the flood bar up in the print cycle and allows the flood bar to drop onto the screen during the flood cycle. The height of the flood bar is adjustable through the rotation of the screw seated in an opening formed by a split support block forming the opening. A first half of the split support block is pivotally attached to the inner flood bar support as described, while the flood bar is supported from the second movable half. This second movable half has a threaded channel formed in its walls while the first channel has smooth walls.

The drive means pivots an arm which supports the squeegee. A link extends from the arm, and the link is operatively connected to the frame supporting the screen. Pivoting of the arm thereby simultaneously moves the squeegee away from the screen while moving the screen away from the object printed. The support for the screen frame is confined by a track holding the frame in a predetermined path of movement toward and away from the object printing position.

    Abstract: A screen printing machine is described which multiplies the normal carriage stroke of a printing machine to allow printing on the surfaces of large objects of revolution. The drive means comprises a sprocket-chain assembly with a chain connected to the carriage drive for following its lateral reciprocal movement. The sprocket is fixedly mounted in axial alignment with a pinion gear for rotation about that axis. The pinion gear in turn is engaged with a rack gear mounted on the screen. As the sprocket rotates, the pinion gear drives the rack and screen in lateral motion. The ratio of pinion gear diameter size to sprocket diameter size governs the stroke length of the screen. With a large (2 to 1 or 3 to 1) ratio the screen stroke or lateral movement of the screen may be doubled or tripled in length.

A just-printed print can be pulled forwardly under the screen which to accommocate the deceleration and acceleration of its knife, extends forwardly beyond its printing area, so it is possible that still-wet print can be smudged by the screen contact. To prevent this, the printing table is provided with a slot down through which the web can pass so it does not contact the screen beyond the latter's printing area.
