  • Patent number: 5685220
Abstract: An apparatus for printing on individual articles comprises a printing cylinder and an impression cylinder. When printing on articles with a cavity for accommodating for example a chip the wall region of the card which delimits the cavity has to be supported for printing on the side opposite the cavity. For that purpose the impression cylinder has a support portion engageable into the cavity when the article passes the impression cylinder. For converting the apparatus between printing procedures of different kinds the support portion is displaceable between an inoperative position and an operative position by displacement of the impression cylinder in the direction of rotation thereof so that in one basic angular position the support portion does not come into contact with the articles passing the impression cylinder during the printing operation and in another basic angular position the support portion engages into the cavity of the article.

  • Patent number: 5676057
Abstract: A device for mounting an applicator roller of a dampening unit in a printing machine is disclosed. The device is adapted for rotatably receiving a roller journal of the applicator roller and for fixing that journal relative to the frame part of the printing machine to provide jolt-free operation of the applicator roller. The device is also adapted to provide linear movement of the applicator roller relative to its adjacent plate and dipping cylinders. The device preferably includes adjusting eccentrics mounted one in the other. The adjusting eccentrics are independently adjustable. The eccentricities of the adjusting eccentrics are arranged such that the applicator roller can be thrown-on, thrown-off and set approximately radially both to the plate cylinder and to the dipping roller. As a result of the independent adjustability of the eccentrics, the applicator roller can be optionally thrown-on to the plate cylinder without contacting the dipping roller or vice versa.

  • Patent number: 5649482
Abstract: An apparatus for the print throw-on and throw-off of the rubber blanket cylinder in the printing unit of a sheet-fed offset printing machine is described. For the throw-on and throw-off of the rubber blanket cylinder in relation to the impression cylinder and to the plate cylinder, the rubber blanket cylinder is mounted pivotably on both sides in eccentric bearings. The pivoting of the eccentric bearings takes place via two individually switchable actuating means, a print regulation mechanism being connected in series up from the actuating means. The two actuating means act on the eccentric bearings via a ternary member for the pivoting of the eccentric bearings, this arrangement selected in this way making it possible, in the case of larger thicknesses of printing material, to throw off the rubber blanket cylinder only from the plate cylinder. The print throw-off and throw-on thus causes lower torque jolts because of the smaller pivoting travel.

  • Patent number: 5355798
Abstract: An intermittent motion rotary printing press in which the inking cylinder and pressure cylinder are mounted in spaced apart relation on a single common bracket assembly which pivots between an inking step position and a print step position. The range of bracket assembly pivot motion is adjustable to define a first stop point at which the inking cylinder transfers ink to a printing plate and a second stop point at which the pressure cylinder confines a web in printing contact with the printing plate. One or more pneumatic cylinders operate to shift the bracket assembly between first and second stop points and hold the assembly at the selected stop point for inking or printing operations respectively.

  • Patent number: 5313883
Abstract: A self-locking mechanism (10) for selectively dynamically adjusting expansion bands (12) of a running cylinder (11) of a rotary printing press during rotation includes a cylindrical adjustment member (30, 72) with a diameter substantially the same as the diameter of the running cylinder which engages a band box (22, 80) rotating with the running cylinder (11) to make the selected adjustments in response to rotation of cylindrical adjusting member (30, 72) at a speed different from the speed of the running cylinder (11). The speed difference is produced by a differential (52, 75) stationary with respect to the running cylinder (11) which engages the cylindrical member (30, 72) and the running cylinder (11). The cylindrical adjusting member (30, 72) is mounted to the running cylinder (11) on an interrupted journal (35). The cylindrical adjusting member (30) has an inner engagement surface (38) for engagement with the band box (22) and another engagement surface (39) for engagement with the differential.

  • Patent number: RE34483
Abstract: A printing apparatus has an array of cartridges for printing a web of e.g. paper passing through the array, and one or more units containing printing medium. The cartridges each are capable of transferring the printing medium from the unit(s) to the web. The unit(s) and the cartridges of the array are relatively movable, to allow the unit(s) to interact successively with at least two of the cartridges. In this way it is possible to change printing from one cartridge to another, allowing changes to be made to what is printed, without halting the movement of web significantly. The present invention also proposes that the cartridges may have printing cylinders of different sizes, and furthermore that a mobile unwind stand may be used to move web material to the printing apparatus, and the web output from the printing apparatus processed by sheet folding techniques.
