Patent number: 4593616Abstract: A dabber printing machine for printing of workpieces with printing ink wherein a dabber-holder is fastened from below to a first and second vertical carriage (6, 6'). The dabber-holders run parallel to one another. In each case, in one extreme position of the horizontal carriage (7), with which both vertical carriages (6, 6') are connected, the vertical carriages (6, 6') are pressed downward by two levers (14) of a pair of gear units (12). In the other extreme position, such are pressed downward by the levers (14) of the other pair of gear units (12). Thus, the dabber-holders with the dabbers jointly and simultaneously make vertical and horizontal movements in the form of an inverted U. A step of operation of the transfer element from printing station to printing station optically occurs upon every or every other horizontal movement. Thus, indexing of the workpieces to be printed is simplified and the efficiency of the printing machine is doubled.Type: GrantFiled: October 4, 1984Date of Patent: June 10, 1986Assignee: MADAG Maschinen-und Apparatebau Dietikon AGInventor: Silvano de Lorenzi

Patent number: 4450765Abstract: An apparatus and a method for applying permanent indicia, such as numbers representing calendar dates, on surface portions of plastic containers, such as containers for holding milk. The apparatus includes a heated die and an inked web mounted on a support plate in positions to cause the indicia-forming elements on the die to engage and force a portion of the web into intimate contact with a flat surface portion of a container. The die effectively brands the container and the ink on the web portion is transferred into the branded portion of the container to render the branded portion readily observable. The containers are moved incrementally past the die and web portion by a conveyor. A container holding device is mounted in a fixed location on the opposite side of the conveyor aligned with the die so that each container is held against lateral movement as the die forces the web portion into contact with the surface of the container to be branded.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 1983Date of Patent: May 29, 1984Inventor: Roger C. Patent number: 4444108Abstract: A printing apparatus is disclosed wherein rocking motion of a movably mounted inking roll assembly is controlled by a cam and follower arrangement coupled to the drive system for a pivoting printing member. The cam and follower arrangement allows coordinated movement of the printing member and inking roll assembly to be obtained in a simple manner and without employing separate drive means for rocking the inking roll assembly. The cam contour is advantageously chosen so that the inking roll is moved gradually toward and then away from the pivot axis of the printing member as the line of contact between the printing element and the inking roll progresses from the leading edge of the printing element to the trailing edge. Such movement of the inking roll maintains uniform tangential contact between the inking roll and the entire surface of a flat printing element as the latter is moved in an arcuate path by the printing member.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 1982Date of Patent: April 24, 1984Assignee: Markem CorporationInventor: Peter Jenness, III

Patent number: 4351234Abstract: A principal object of the invention is to provide an improved marking apparatus capable of clearly marking desired information at the same relative location on a succession of rapidly-moving, heat-sensitive articles. Prior art marking devices employing heated printing heads presented problems when employed to mark in this manner. These problems became accute where the printing extended over any significant distance in the direction of travel. The apparatus, shown generally as 10 in FIG. 1 is of the type comprising an electrically-heated marking head 12, a backup means 14 positioned opposite the marking head, and means 16 for reciprocating the marking head between a withdrawn position and a marking position adjacent to said backup means. A specific improvement according to the invention is the imparting elliptical motion of the printing head which enables contact times sufficient for clear marking at linear rates of greater than 1500 inches per minute.Type: GrantFiled: July 7, 1980Date of Patent: September 28, 1982Assignee: General Foods CorporationInventors: James E.
