    Abstract: The fuze comprises a fuze body having a readily crushable nose cone and a thermal initiator, a thermally ignitable flash detonator and a main charge of booster explosive disposed in sequence in the body. The thermal initiator includes a cup having a closed front end and an open rear end closed by a non-metallic, thermally destructive closure. A readily thermally ignitable, incendiary, exothermic chemical material is disposed in the cup, and the cup is fixed in the nose. Rearward of the cup a rotor ball is disposed in the fuze, which rotor ball contains the detonator. A C-spring connects the rotor ball to the fuze body and maintains the rotor ball in an orientation such that the detonator in the rotor ball is out of alignment with the initiator except when the fuze is spinning beyond the gun barrel as when it is connected to a fired projectile. The detonator includes a cup having a closed thermal barrier alignable with the rear end of the initiator cup, and a thermally destructive closure on the opposite end.

    Abstract: A device for igniting an article, such as safety fuse is disclosed having a body portion, (14) a chamber block (43) received in said body portion, said chamber block being movable relative to said body portion, said chamber block having a chamber (48) for receiving an igniter, and said device having an aperture (72) for receiving the article therein or adjacent to which the article can be located, said chamber block being movable from one position in which the igniter can be loaded into the chamber to a second position in which the igniter can be fired, the chamber and aperture being in communication at least when the chamber block is in the second position, a spring biased striker (26, 28) for firing said igniter to thereby ignite said article. The device also has a jaw (70) leading to the aperture to hold the article and a cleaning and ejector tool in said device which may be removed to clean the chamber block and eject spent igniters from the block.

The device comprises arming means which influenced by the heating produced on the casing of the projectile are arranged to effectuate the arming function. The arming means comprises a bimetallic strip with one end contacting the casing of the projectile and one end free to move on heating. The movement is utilized to change the safety device from its first safe position to its second armed position.

    Abstract: The sensor includes a linearly movable mass including two sections and spring means urging one of the sections into operative engagement with means including an actuating element. The sensor also includes means releasably securing the two sections together and means releasing the securing means when the two sections have moved a predetermined distance against the urging of the spring. The two sections may be rollers of a rolamite unit. A flexible band extends around a portion of the two rollers. One example of a use for such a sensor is in an air bag safety restraint system.
