  • Patent number: 5448953
Abstract: A running gear unit for low-floor rail vehicles includes a running gear frame on which individual wheels are rotatably mounted through a respective rocker and the rocker is articulatingly attached and supported by primary springs. The running gear frame is connected to a car body of the low-floor rail vehicle through two articulated rods having one end being articulatingly mounted at a distance from one another on a crossmember of the running gear frame and another end being likewise articulatingly attached to the car body. The car body is supported on the running gear frame through secondary springs being mounted in pockets near transverse ends of the crossmember. Transverse stops are disposed at a distance from one another in the crossmember for limiting transverse movement of the car body relative to the running gear unit.

  • Patent number: 5222442
Abstract: A railway truck has frames on each side divided into separate components or lever arms extending from the axles. Opposed arms are secured together by a pair of parallel torque tubes. A bolster rides on the tubes and maintains the tubes in parallel and provides frictional damping. The torsion tubes each carry a pair of torsion bars secured at the inner end to the torque tube and to the outer end to the bolster. Unequal loads on opposite wheels are carried equally by the torsion tubes.

  • Patent number: 4817535
Abstract: A stand alone double stack railroad well car for carrying stacked containers is disclosed. The car includes a platform suspended at each end upon swing hangers from a multiple axle truck or suspension system, utilizing leaf springs. Adjacent axles are connected by bridging beams which are pivotally connected to the leaf springs. Shear pads connected between the bridging beams and axles permit limited angular displacement of the axles relative to each other. Axle guards are provided for limiting lateral movement of the car relative to the trucks. An axle guard frame assembly is rotatably connected to the underside of the car body or platform at each end. It includes vertical axle guards which engage the axle bearing adapter housings to limit lateral movement. The rotatable connection of the axle guard frame assembly on the underside of the carbody permits limited rotational or pivotal movement of the axle guard frame as the suspension system negotiates a curve in the track.

  • Patent number: 4494464
Abstract: A wheeled carriage is proposed which is capable of moving on rails to-and-fro, and of moving on a railless flat floor in any desired direction. The carriage has at least three pivotable wheel units. Each of these units consists of a first wheel and a second wheel. The first wheel comprises a core wheel portion and a raised peripheral wheel portion surrounding the latter. The second wheel resembles substantially the core wheel portion of the first wheel. The wheel unit is designed for making two contact points with rails when seen at its side view and equally two contact points with rails when seen at its front or rear view.

  • Patent number: 4459919
Abstract: A supporting and guiding device for railway vehicles has at least four wheels 1, 2 mounted on a support intended to be fixed to the body 3 of a vehicle near one end thereof. The device includes a cross bar 8 maintained perpendicular to the vertical plane containing the longitudinal axis of the vehicle, and two longitudinal beams 5 which each carry at least two wheels. In use the beams extend longitudinally of the body on both sides of the vertical plane, and they are connected to each other by a rod 12 mounted on ball and socket joints 13.The longitudinal beams are hinged (9) to the common cross bar such that the wheels carried by the beams may become oriented in order to follow the curves of the track rails 6 and to be moved in order to pass over inequalities or unevennesses of said track.

  • Patent number: 4457238
Abstract: A railway truck assembly adapted to produce steering of the wheel axles radially to a curve to reduce wear and noise and characterized by a pivot connection between the bolster and the truck frame elements which; in cooperation with direct transmission of the load to the truck frame through the opposite ends of the bolster, allows to use a relatively thinner and centrally non-bulging bolster. Thus, more space is made available between the central portion of the bolster and the top of the rails; which space is advantageously used to install some equipment such as for instance a linear induction motor or LIM.

  • Patent number: 4388872
Abstract: A bogie for rail cars comprises a traverse which has a portion at each side which extends forwardly and rearwardly and includes a central pin which is engaged in a support box of a half bogie. Each side of the traverse carries a pin which engages in the support box of an associated bogie and the bogie is capable of some vertical and horizontal rotation in respect to the pin. The traverse is supported on springs which extend between the overlying traverse and the underlying bogie at a longitudinally spaced location from the pin. Forward and rear wheel sets are supported in the associated bogies at respective ends thereof and they carry a driving motor therebetween having a planetary gearing which is connected to drive the associated wheels of each set. The bogies are advantageously interconnected by transversely extending tie rods arranged at spaced longitudinal locations in respect to the support pin.

  • Patent number: 4285280
Abstract: A short wheelbase railroad truck having two axles intended to assume a radial configuration when the railroad vehicle rounds curves comprises a frame having two side members and axles mounted in bearing means. The bearing means are pivotally attached to the frame members with at least two of the bearing means being attached to the frame members by means of steering levers which are pivotally attached to the associated bearing means and the frame members for independent pivotal movement. Steering rods connect each steering lever to the vehicle body such that the chording of the vehicle as it rounds a curve will guide each axle to the radial alignment. In one embodiment each axle is guided by such steering rods and levers. In another embodiment one axle is guided by steering rods and levers and the side members move relatively longitudinally to guide the other axle.

  • Patent number: 4022133
Abstract: A device for reducing the lateral movements of a railway vehicle caused by irregularities in the rail. The railway vehicle contains at least one wheel which is mounted for limited rotation around a generally vertical axis. A separate power-operated control means for performing limited rotation receives signals from a sensing means so that the wheel is turned around the generally vertical axis in such a direction that the effect of the irregularities are reduced.
