Patent number: 7036707Abstract: Disclosed is a friction stir welding technique which avoids occurrence of a dent, in a joining region, extending to a level beneath the joined surfaces. At end portions of the frame members to be joined, at the joining region, thickened parts which project toward the rotary body joining tool are provided. Two adjoining thickened parts, of adjacent members to be joined, can form a trapezoid shape. The rotary body joining tool has a small-diameter tip portion and a larger diameter portion. The rotary body joining tool is inserted in the thickened parts. In a state where the rotary body joining tool has been inserted small-diameter tip end first, to a level where the larger diameter portion of the rotary body joining tool overlaps the thickened part but does not extend below the upper surface of the non-thickened surfaces of the members joined, the rotary body is rotated and moved along the joining region. Even when a gap exists between two thickened parts, a desirable joining can be carried out.Type: GrantFiled: July 2, 2003Date of Patent: May 2, 2006Assignee: Hitachi, Ltd.Inventors: Kinya Aota, Masakuni Ezumi, Yasuo Ishimaru, Hisanori Okamura, Isao Funyuu, Akihiro Satou

Patent number: 6550397Abstract: A car body, in which a hollow shape stock composed of two face plates and ribs joining the face plates together is used to form a side body, and stresses are reduced while minimizing an increase in mass. A car body, comprising a hollow shape stock composed of two face plates (31, 31) and ribs (32) joining the face plates together and used to form a side body (11), wherein face plate portions (31c, 31d) in regions (B, D) above and below connection points (c) between circular arcs, which constitute corner portions of a window (15), and vertical sides of the window (15) are greater in thickness than in the remaining regions (A, C, E). Stresses are most heavily concentrated in the regions (B, D). Therefore, it is possible to achieve reduction in mass and enhancement in strength together. Further, buckling preventive tools can be arranged in spaces in the regions (B, D) of the hollow shape stock.Type: GrantFiled: April 9, 2002Date of Patent: April 22, 2003Assignee: Hitachi, Ltd.Inventors: Takeshi Kawasaki, Sumio Okuno, Toshiaki Makino, Kentaro Masai, Kazufumi Yamaji

Patent number: 6134787Abstract: A method of producing a rail-bound rail vehicle for passenger transport, includes providing at least one trough-like superstructure with a floor and adjoining side walls formed in a framework construction from side-wall posts, lower longitudinal members and upper longitudinal flanges or chords. The upper longitudinal flanges are supported against one another by connecting members. The side walls have windows and access areas with doors. The side-wall posts are disposed in a zigzag manner and are rigidly connected to the lower longitudinal members and the upper longitudinal flanges, and serve as supporting elements for the windows and side paneling elements fastened thereto. The superstructure is assembled from shaped pieces and bar parts which have been cut to length.Type: GrantFiled: May 24, 1999Date of Patent: October 24, 2000Assignee: DaimlerChrysler AGInventors: Helmut Elsner, Ferdinand Tegeler, Hans-Dieter Eisbrecher

Patent number: 5685230Abstract: A rail vehicle includes a body with side walls having a frame including supporting beams for absorbing vertical forces and longitudinal beams extending horizontally. Panelling is disposed on the inner side and the outer side of the frame and attached to the longitudinal beams. Additionally, windows are disposed in the side walls and framed by the supporting and the longitudinal beams. The supporting beams extend obliquely to the longitudinal beams and engage in the respective recesses of the longitudinal beams.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 1996Date of Patent: November 11, 1997Assignee: ABB Henschel AGInventor: Ferdinand Tegeler

Patent number: 5287813Abstract: The coach body construction comprises an upper structure having extruded profiles, which are connected detachably to one another by corner connectors and are made of an aluminum alloy, and a lower structure. The lower structure is composed of longitudinal and transverse supports which are made of an extruded aluminum alloy and are detachably connected to one another and to the upper structure by corner connectors. In interaction with the upper structure, it is of inherently sturdy construction. The corner connectors are, in particular, screw-on corner connectors.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 1991Date of Patent: February 22, 1994Assignee: Alusuisse-Lonza Services Ltd.Inventors: Roland Hanni, Alex Stutz, Giorgio Destefani

Patent number: 4373447Abstract: The rail vehicle body is constructed such that the base, roof and a centrally located bearing frame define a unitary bearing section member. The bearing frame may be composed of pairs of vertically stiffened walls, rows of vertically disposed posts, and one or more lattice girders. The side walls of the vehicle body are removably mounted so that ready access can be made to the chambers defined on opposite sides of the load-bearing frame. In addition, the load-bearing frame or frames are provided with apertures to provide access between the chambers on opposite sides of the bearing frame. Also, a drive means for driving the wheels of the vehicle body can be suspended from transverse girders forming the base of the vehicle body.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 1979Date of Patent: February 15, 1983Assignee: Schweizerische Lokomotiv und MaschinenfabrikInventor: Johann K.
