Abstract: Aqueous binder compositions with reduced rates of salt precipitation are described. The compositions may include a carbohydrate and a sequestrant for sequestering one or more multivalent ions (e.g., Ca2+, Mg2+, Ba2+, Al3+, Fe2+, Fe3+, etc.). The sequestrant reduces a precipitation rate for the multivalent ions from the aqueous binder composition. Methods of reducing salt precipitation from a binder composition are also described. The methods may include the steps of providing an aqueous binder solution having one or more carbohydrates. They may also include adding a sequestrant for one or more multivalent ions to the aqueous binder solution. The sequestrant reduces a precipitation rate for the multivalent ions from the binder composition.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to a method for preparing colloidal dispersions of precious metal nanoparticles selected from the group consisting of Pt, Au, Pd, Ag, Rh, Ru and mixtures or alloys thereof, and to a method for isolating such precious metal nanoparticles from these colloidal dispersions. The colloidal dispersions are prepared by reducing suitable precious metal precursor compounds in aqueous alkaline solutions at reaction temperatures between 40 and 70° C. and a pH?12.0 in the presence of polysaccharides with average molecular weights (Mw) in the range of 300,000 to 1,000,000. The precious metal nanoparticles are isolated after decomposing the polysaccharide by heating the colloidal dispersions to temperatures >80° C. The nanoparticles can be used for the manufacture of core/shell-type catalyst materials and for electronic, decorative and medical applications.

Abstract: An object of the present invention is to provide an organosol for forming a coating that can remain hydrophilic for a long time even in a situation with no exposure to light, and a manufacturing method thereof. As a means for solving this problem, the organosol is created by dispersing magnesium fluoride compound obtained by reacting at least a magnesium compound (the main raw material) with a solution containing hydrogen fluoride, in an organic solvent. The organosol is characterized by containing fine particles of the magnesium fluoride compound which particles have an average particle diameter of from 5 to 500 nm.

Abstract: The invention relates to a composite material based on water-insoluble polysaccharide. The composite material includes particles of at least one light scattering material, the surface of which is essentially covered by at least one water-insoluble polysaccharide material. The invention also relates to a method for the preparation of the composite material. Further, the invention relates to a paper and board manufacturing process, in which said composite materials are employed as manufacturing materials. Both highly organic end products with exceptional heat capacities and cheap, high filler end products can be manufactured. The invention also relates to a method for improving retention of light scattering filler material in the manufacture of paper and board.

  • Publication number: 20090075093
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and compositions for producing a hydrophilic coating on a surface of a solid material. The method comprises a cleaning step and a coating step. The cleaning step may be preceded by an initial cleaning step and it may optionally be succeeded by a preconditioning step prior to the coating step. The cleaning step comprises cleaning and preconditioning a surface of a material by use of a first cleaning fluid composition comprising ceria (CeO2) particles. The coating step comprises treatment by use of a coating fluid composition comprising photocatalytically active nanoparticles of titania (TiO2). An advantage of the method of the invention is that the method may be carried out at temperatures in the range 5 to 50° C. No further heating is required. Thereby, the method may easily be used for treating materials such as windows, furniture, tiles, walls, etc.

  • Patent number: 7449429
Abstract: An initial chemical composition comprising selected surfactants, dispersants, and degreasers that liquefy, disperse, demulsify, degrease, inhibit corrosion and scale formation, and lower the pour point of a petroleum, coal, Fischer-Tropsch synthesized, or naturally occurring paraffin-based wax and asphaltene. Such a product is capable of converting crystalline wax (paraffin) in, for example, slop oil into an amorphous form of wax at room temperature, allowing the wax to be dissolved in, for example, crude oil without the need for heating, and maintaining it in solution at room temperature, substantially reducing, indeed in some applications, preventing, for example, wax build-up in pipelines, processing and transportation equipment, etc., and the recovery of the hydrocarbons in the slop oil. In a second aspect of the invention, the pre-blend addition of a hydrotrope-demulsifier, a chelating agent and a wax plasticizer can result in a BS&W of zero for the recovered hydrocarbon blend.
