  • Patent number: 6074475
Abstract: A low-density, syntactic foam material is provided according to the invention. The syntactic foam material is prepared by mixing together a plurality of microballoons and a finely divided solid thermosetting resin. Fibers are also preferably incorporated into the material during processing to impart specific properties. The mixture is heated to allow the thermosetting resin to flow and wet the microballoons in the mixture. The mixture is then cured to set and crosslink the thermosetting resin to form the syntactic foam of the invention. The syntactic foam material has highly uniform properties and can be used in aerospace applications.

Abstract: The present invention provides a water soluble, inorganic pyrolytic paint which, when dried to form a paint layer, generates heat from a whole surface of the paint layer by supplying electric current therethrough. The pyrolytic paint is prepared by mixing and stirring together a mixture of metal carbide, metal oxide, metal nitride, metal boride and metal silicide, additive metal and a solvent containing sodium citrate, ethylene glycol, silicic acid anhydride and/or sodium silicate and water. When painted on a substrate surface and dried, the silicon dioxide component thereof forms insoluble macromolecular lands "L" by the condensation reaction of silanol base, which form a stable paint layer, and metal particles M thereof bridge the lands L and are supported thereby to provide uniform electric resistance throughout a surface of the paint layer, so that the paint layer can generate heat uniformly throughout the paint layer when electric current is supplied therethrough.

  • Patent number: 5242649
Abstract: A hydrated calcium silicate slurry composition is made up of 100 parts by weight of hydrated calcium silicate, 5 to 40 parts by weight of a powdered resin and water and molded articles are produced therefrom. In addition to the above components, 1 to 30 parts by weight of a reinforcing fiber and/or 20 to 35 parts by weight (as solids) of a latex or emulsion may be used. When the latex or emulsion is used, the powdered resin is reduced to an amount of 5 to 20 parts by weight. Since the molded calcium silicate articles have a superior workability and a good thermal dimensional stability, they are very useful especially in the preparation of molds or models where high levels of processing precision and thermal stability are required.

  • Patent number: 5190104
Abstract: A sand consolidation method is provided for use in a borehole having an unconsolidated or loosely consolidated oil or gas reservoir which is likely to introduce substantial amounts of sand into the borehole and cause caving. After perforating the borehole's casing at an interval of the formation where sand will be produced, an aqueous silicate solution is injected into said interval. Next, a spacer volume of a water-immiscible hydrocarbonaceous liquid is introduced into the interval. Thereafter, a water-miscible organic solvent containing an alkylpolysilicate is injected into the interval. A permeability retaining silica cement is formed in the interval. Injection of the aqueous silicate and organic solvent containing an alkylpolysilicate is continued until the interval has been consolidated by the silica cement to an extent sufficient to prevent sand migration and thereby prevent caving.

  • Patent number: 5059247
Abstract: A foundry sand composition that is self-hardening after a working life of about 10-20 minutes that is composed of a foundry sand, a sodium silicate binder and a specifically defined polyester polycarbonate hardener is prepared by:a) mixing a foundry sand with about 2-6 wt. %, based on the foundry sand, of an aqueous solution containing about 40-60 wt. % of sodium silicate, the ratio of SiO.sub.2 /Na.sub.2 O of the sodium silicate about 2.2 to 3, to form an initial sand mixture, andb) then adding about 5-15 wt. % of the polyester polycarbonate hardener, based on the weight of the aqueous solution of sodium silicate, to provide the foundry sand composition.

  • Patent number: 5049237
Abstract: Disclosed are flocced mineral materials which may be utilized to prepare high temperature resistant, water resistant articles. These materials are prepared by utilizing, as a starting material, a gellable layered swelled silicate that has an average charge per structural unit that ranges from about -0.4 to -1 and which contains interstitial cations which promote swelling with a source of at least one species of multiamine derived cations.

  • Patent number: 4994113
Abstract: A mixture of waste, essentially cellulosic material and a fire proofing solution can be used to make building materials with exceptional qualities. These qualities include fire proofing, vermin proofing, water proofing and excellent insulative values, for example. Additionally, this process represents an excellent method for recycle of these waste materials. A sheetrock-like or wall-board material can be made therefrom, one which can be nailed, screwed, drilled and fastened without causing serious damage to the surface or the element itself.
