A grate subsystem contains the fuel and includes at least one grinding mechanism. A controller is responsive to the at least one sensor and controls the grinding mechanism by activating the grinding mechanism if the predetermined condition exists to reduce the collection of non-fuel products on the grate subsystem.

    Abstract: A grate plate construction for installation as part of a grate assembly in which free flowing material is supported for movement along a path while treatment gas flows upwardly through such material. The construction has a relatively thin carrier plate having a highly wear resistant upper surface mounted in a supporting frame having ribs and webs which form with the carrier plate channels through which treatment gas flows for passage through the material via slots formed in the carrier plate by a high-energy process. The construction is economical even though the carrier plate itself is formed from relatively expensive material.

Each of the windboxes comprises a plurality of modules that are configured for installation at respective elevations, each of the modules being dimensioned and configured for shipment to the installation site. Some forms of the invention further includes a vertically extending truss assembly and the ignitor and auxiliary air compartments are supported on the truss assembly. Other forms of the invention include air ducting supplying air to air compartments and the truss assembly extends within the ducting. Still other forms of the invention may utilize the truss assembly without the modular windbox.

    Abstract: A process wherein an incineration grate is tempered by a medium that flows therethrough. The grate has a number of hollow plates made of sheet metal. Each plate lies on the next underlying plate. A connection pipe is arranged on one side of each plate and a discharge pipe is arranged on the other side of each plate for the flowing medium. The individual plates are crossed by a plurality of tubular elements which open on the top side of the plates. Primary air is supplied to the materials to be incinerated through the tubular elements. Primary air supply is individually dosed to each tubular element.

Each fuel- or fire-bed member comprises an upright or vertical plate and a horizontal plate and combustion air injection holes are formed through the upright or vertical plate so that the foreign matter such as ash, metal pieces or the like as well as the molten ash produced as the result of the combustion of waste with a low melting point can be prevented from falling through the combustion air holes into the stoker.

    Abstract: A flexible, perforate grate, e.g. made of a mat of meshed metal chain links or wirecloth belting, is provided at intervals spaced across its length, with individually extensile/retractile supports. By coordinately extending and retracting the supports, the material fed onto the grate at one margin can be walked, rolled, tumbled and similarly redistributed and moved across the grate to the opposite margin, and, for instance dumped off the far edge of the grate into a residue collecting system. The grate may be basically horizontal, or it may have a general cascade-like tilt either forwards or rearwards. In one embodiment, the supports are seen each having a grate mat contact member which pivots during extension and retraction in order to further alter the shape of the grate mat intervening two adjacent supports.

    Abstract: Apparatus for progressively burning biomass material comprising a retort defining a chamber, a linearly moving grate bed enclosed within the chamber with a space below and a space above for respectively supplying primary air to the lower side of the grate and for collecting gases generated by progressive distillation of the biomass material at the upper side of the grate. Primary air is supplied to the underside of the grate bed at different pressures lengthwise of the grate by a distribution chamber extending lengthwise of the grate of V-shaped cross section containing at its bottom a Venturi opening through which air is delivered to the distribution chamber from successive longitudinally-arranged plenum chambers which, in turn, are supplied with air through conductors connected to a primary air source, each of which contains a damper. The grate may be horizontal or inclined.
