  • Patent number: 8011309
Abstract: The invention provides an innovative yet straightforward approach to driving the seed distribution system in planters which feature hinged winged extensions. The flexibility of the hinged winged extensions may allow the planter to adjust to the contours of a field and to fold to facilitate transport of the planter. In one embodiment, for example, the invention may provide a mechanical coupling between several sections of a seed drive shaft which may support and be driven by a hydraulic motor for each of the winged sections. The seed drive system may also be coupled to row units to synchronize and power the distribution of seeds by the planter.

  • Patent number: 5465869
Abstract: A tool for depositing seed uniformly along a prepared furrow. The tool uses the rolling motion of a ground engaging wheel to drive a seed pickup and delivery mechanism. A pickup wheel which is coupled to the ground engaging wheel contacts the seeds via a slot in the seed container. A suction force created by an oscillating bellow is channeled to a pickup aperture in the circumference of the pickup wheel. Picked seed is carried by the pickup wheel to a guiding duct to be released and delivered to the soil. The tool also includes an electronic monitor that produces a short audible beep for every deposited seed.

  • Patent number: 4729493
Abstract: A powered seed dispenser for uniformly distributing seeds along the ground which includes a handle carrying a powered driven motor and a pivotally mounted seed distributor which is engaged and driven by the powered driven motor, the seed distributor being constructed of a pair of opposed discs, each disc having a pair of inner and outer sidewalls extending transversely therefrom toward its opposing disc, such discs being constructed and arranged to connect together telescopically in such manner as to create an inner metering chamber and an outer dispensing chamber wherein seeds contained inside the metering chamber discharge through openings in the inner sidewalls from the top portion of the volume of seeds, such seeds then falling into the dispensing chamber defined by the outer sidewalls where they are directed and discharged uniformly through dispensing apertures in the outer sidewalls at a point adjacent to the lowermost point of travel of the dispensing apertures.

  • Patent number: 4664290
Abstract: In a seed meter in which a seed disk is rotatably mounted within a housing, a method and apparatus are provided for positioning the seed disk within the housing so that the peripheral portion of the seed disk is located a desired, relatively uniform distance from an adjacent peripheral portion of the housing. A shaft having a threaded outer portion is rotatably mounted within the housing and a hub having a threaded aperture therein is positioned on and turned relative to the threaded outer portion of the shaft to begin advancing the threaded aperture onto the shaft. The seed disk is then mounted on the hub, following which rotation of the hub relative to the shaft is continued in a direction to advance the hub along the shaft toward the housing until a gap of desired size exists between the peripheral portion of the seed disk and the peripheral portion of the housing.

  • Patent number: 4650090
Abstract: In a manual sowing apparatus a cell wheel 132 is provided which is drivable by a wheel disk 116 directly or via a reduction gear and which conveys the grain seeds from a receiving chamber via pockets disposed in the wheel to a discharge station. A plurality of cell wheels are associated with each apparatus and can be fixed via a bayonet coupling on a support drum 72. Cell wheels which are not in use can be accommodated in a receiver 104. A resilient scraper is disposed at the discharge end of the receiving chamber and prevents jamming of the cell wheel by scraping off grains when they are too large or when there are too many in a pocket, while grains projecting a slight extent can pass beneath the scraper.

  • Patent number: 4533066
Abstract: A seed planter comprises a seed transport member having a porous surface and an air jet directed normally to this surface. The porous surface is moved past a plurality of seeds, whereupon the air jet retains a single seed on the porous surface, and the seed transport member carries this retained seed to a seed unloading station, where the impingement of the air jet upon the surface is interrupted, thus allowing the retained seed to fall from the porous surface. The planter is capable of metering both flat and spherical seeds very accurately at metering rates of about 40 seeds per second and can be made of small width so that a single row of planters on a planter assembly can plant closely spaced rows. A planter assembly capable of planting multiple rows of seeds is provided by mounting a plurality of the seed planters on a frame.

  • Patent number: 4493272
Abstract: An agricultural planter for metering seeds for row crops includes a main frame in the form of a sled with transport wheels which can be selectively raised and lowered for transporting the planter and a tool bar for mounting a plurality of implements. A planter unit for the planter machine includes a main frame having a pair of vertically extending shanks for connecting to the tool bar, a mounting bracket for a seed shoe, and a bracket for a press wheel, a vacuum operated seed dispensing device with the vacuum provided by a vacuum fan mounted on the sled and powered by hydraulic motor with fluid from the main hydraulic system of the tractor. A jack shaft mounted transverse to the sled for powering the implements is driven by a ground wheel including a frame having a pair of reversible tool bar shanks and a drive transmission including a countershaft providing the pivotal support for the frame of the ground wheel.

  • Patent number: 4263858
Abstract: A machine (FIG. 1) for dispensing seed and fertilizers, which is equipped with two hoppers one for the seed, and the other for the fertilizer. The materials flowing from outlet apertures of the hoppers while the machine is in operation are introduced into the soil in controlled amounts through proportioning means, chutes and tubes which discharge into hoes. The proportioning means have a plurality of feed wheels disposed on shafts and are driven by a ground-dependent power source.

  • Patent number: 3990606
Abstract: A single seed drilling machine has a rotatable drum the interior of which is connected in use to a source of reduced pressure. The drum is closed by a plate which has a circle of suction holes, so that seed can be held at the holes against the outer surface of the plate. Within the drum an interrupter device engages the plate to close a hole in the lowest region of the plate. Adjacent that hole, outside the plate, is a seed ejector device. Thus in the lowest region of the rotatable plate, the suction holding seed at a hole is temporarily rendered ineffective, at which time the seed is directed away from the plate by the ejector device.
