  • Patent number: 4387123
Abstract: In the coating of a strip article of indeterminate length, wherein the article is continuously advanced lengthwise past a dam while liquid coating material is supplied to a major surface of the article ahead of the dam, the article is passed through a gap of extended length immediately beyond the dam, the gap being defined between uniformly spaced walls one of which faces the article surface bearing the coating material. The spacing between the gap walls is equal to the thickness of the strip article plus a desired wet thickness of the layer of coating material. Coating material of different colors or shades may be supplied to different portions of the strip surface for producing coatings of varied patterns.

  • Patent number: 4352277
Abstract: An apparatus for continuously applying a treating solution as foam to a cloth, comprising a U-shaped foam tank for storing foam of a treating solution such as a dye solution supplied from an apparatus for generating foam of the treating solution, guide rolls for transporting a cloth to be treated continuously through the foam tank so as to adhere the foam of the treating solution to the cloth while the cloth is passing through the foam tank, and a means for controlling the amount of foam adhered to the cloth in taking out the cloth from the foam tank. By using this apparatus, a necessary and sufficient amount of the treating solution for the subsequent heat treatment of the cloth can be applied to the cloth uniformly with no need of removing the excess of treating solution and/or solvent from the cloth prior to the heat treatment.

  • Patent number: 4340623
Abstract: A method and apparatus for high speed application of sizing compositions in which there is a pair of oppositely rotating rolls forming a coating nip therebetween through which a paper web to be sized is directed. Sizing composition is delivered to the nip in sufficient quantity to form a pond of sizing composition above the nip. The invention is particularly concerned with reducing the effects of translational energy which is transmitted into the pond from the rolls by providing at least one flexible baffle member which extends into the pond on opposite sides of the paper web into proximity with the nip. The baffle member should be sufficiently long to absorb translational energy which would otherwise be absorbed by the pond of sizing material.

  • Patent number: 4258651
Abstract: An apparatus for treating the surfaces of a panel with irregular sides. Sealant is pressurized by applicator rolls acting on the top and bottom faces of the panel while sealant, deposited on the panel sides, is dispersed thereover by the side located spreader rolls. Side applicator rolls are stationed in series along each side of the moving panel with a first series of rolls each having an annular portion for pressuring sealant into the surfaces of the grooved side of the panel. Similarly the tongue side of the panel is sequentially treated by the rolls of a second series each having a circumferential recess within which is received the tongue of the remaining panel side. Additional rolls surface treat the panel faces. The side applicator rolls are biased into panel side engagement by spring assemblies which couple opposed side applicator rolls to one another to permit same to accommodate a moving panel with uniform pressure regardless of discrepancies in the panel path.

  • Patent number: 4208230
Abstract: A moving, fibrous web is impregnated with a liquid by placing the liquid on the surface of the web, spreading the liquid over the web surface, pressuring a portion of the liquid into the web to partially saturate the web with the liquid and leave residual liquid on the web, and metering the residual liquid into a layer of substantially uniform thickness. This layer is then forced into the web to saturate it with liquid. This method is particularly effective for producing plastic pipe incorporating at least one layer of fibrous material saturated with liquid resin .Apparatus for practicing this method comprises a first surface transverse to the surface of the web, and a second surface converging with the web in the direction of travel of the web. The first surface performs the spreading step and the second surface performs the pressuring and metering steps.

  • Patent number: 4163429
Abstract: In apparatus for applying fluid adhesive to strips to be wound helically to form a tube, the strips are led over a tank in step-wise configuration with successive strips laterally and vertically offset relative to one another but overlapping so that an upper strip partially overlaps the next lower strip. Liquid adhesive pumped from the tank is delivered onto the uppermost strip which then passes through scrapers which scrape surplus adhesive off the strips so that at least part of the surplus flows off a lateral edge of the uppermost strip onto the next lower strip. If there are more than two strips, the process is repeated so that surplus adhesive is flowed at least in part from each strip to the next lower strip. Any surplus not retained by the strips flows back to the tank.

  • Patent number: 3936541
Abstract: This relates to a method of decorating a panel having a multi-level pattern of ridges and recesses on a major surface thereof. This patterned major surface is coated with a liquid pigmented material and is thereafter rollingly contacted under pressure with a roll having a resilient surface. The resilient roll picks up liquid pigmented material from the higher portions of the pattern while at the same time the pigmented material which has been picked up from the panel surface is continually removed or cleaned from the roll surface. Thereafter, the pigmented material which remains on the panel surface is at least partially dried or cured. In the preferred form of the invention the panel surface has a layer of paper integrally combined therewith, the paper having a printed surface thereon which complements the multi-level surface pattern of the panel.
