  • Patent number: 6818062
Abstract: It is possible to give ultrathin and uniform coating on a flexible web in scraping-off type coating. The distribution of pressure in a web width direction is adjusted by a pressure distribution adjusting device when an excess of coating liquid excessively applied is scraped off by a doctor blade by giving relative pressure to a coating surface of a web and the doctor blade after applying the coating liquid that is more excessive than the desired quantity of the coating liquid on the web by a precoating apparatus while making the web continuously travel.

  • Patent number: 6786972
Abstract: A method and arrangement using the drive device of a rod coating station to carry axial forces, in which the drive device includes at least a telescopic articulated shaft, at the first end of which is a changeable grooved rod and at the opposite end of which is the shaft of the drive motor. The rotation of the rod creates an axial force, which is cancelled by a counterforce from the articulated shaft side, which is brought to the end of the rod. The counterforce is brought to the rod through the articulated shaft from the drive motor side.

  • Patent number: 6726810
Abstract: A paper web is smoothened by passing the web through a pre-calender device on a paper machine before the application of a coating. The pre-calender device comprises at least one pair of steel rolls, one of which is heated, and a liquid application device which applies a thin film of water to the surface of the web which contacts the heated roll before the web enters the nip between the rolls. The web is then dried after exiting the nip either by wrapping the heated roll and/or by applying heat externally to the web.

  • Patent number: 6719845
Abstract: The present invention relates to an improved doctor blade and bedplate apparatus wherein there is a recess in the bedplate from some position upstream of the doctor blade to some position downstream of the doctor blade. This recess or gap in the area of the bedplate under the doctor blade allows one to form an even or uniform coating on the back of a web of material. This is particularly helpful in forming uniform coatings on the back of a greige good which has face fibers of varying lengths. The present invention also relates to an improved process for preparing a relatively uniform coating on the back of a web of material.

  • Patent number: 6630229
Abstract: A recording medium particularly suitable for electrophotographic copying is characterized by coated paper that for a given basis weight has proportionally less coating and proportionally more fiber than conventional coated paper made for electrophotographic processes. The base sheet of the coated paper is preferably formed square on a paper machine wet end and has on the order of 40-50% less filler than conventional sheet paper made for electrophotographic processes. After being formed and dried, the base sheet is provided with a top coat weight that is approximately 60% less than the typical coat weight used for conventional paper. The coating is formulated to have sufficient viscosity to stay more on the surface of the base sheet. The coated sheet is calendered to a medium gloss on the order of a 75° TAPPI gloss of about 45, both to preserve a degree of surface roughness to enhance runnability of the paper through an electrophotographic copier and to provide a pleasant and easily readable surface.

  • Patent number: 6524444
Abstract: In a paper machine having a roll rotating about an axis extending in a cross machine direction, and having a doctor blade applied to the roll surface by a blade holder parallel to the axis and carried on a doctor back, an apparatus is provided for accommodating relative movement between the blade holder and the doctor back in the cross machine direction during mounting and removal of the blade holder. The apparatus comprises a rail fixed to the doctor back and extending longitudinally in the cross machine direction. A groove extends along the length of the guide rail. The groove has a bottom, a width measured between confronting sides, and a top defined by ledges projecting inwardly from the sides, with inner edges spaced one from the other to define a slot that underlies the blade holder and has a width narrower than the width of the groove. A plurality of shafts are spaced along the length of the blade holder and project downwardly through the slot and into the groove.

  • Patent number: 6495196
Abstract: A process and apparatus, including a separate coating head, for coating a strip article with a coating material. The process involves coating a strip article with a film of coating material by passing the strip article through a coating apparatus having at least one floating coating head provided with a coating face facing and extending laterally across a surface of the strip article to be coated. The coating head exudes a coating material and floats on the coating material as it meters the coating to a film of the desired thickness. The coating face of the coating head has a preferred coating profile between its opposite ends, and wherein distortions of the preferred coating profile during coating of said strip article are substantially prevented by modifying heat flux to or from selected parts of the coating head to compensate for distortions caused by differences of temperature within the coating head. The apparatus provides means of modifying heat flux to prevent such distortions of the coating profile.
