Abstract: A coating applicator is provided having a plate cylinder including a cylindrical body about which a coating plate is mounted in sleeve-like fashion. The plate is the type used in the flexographic printing industry, and is made of photosensitive, monomeric material. The longitudinal edges of the plate are mounted to the cylindrical body using a clamping mechanism which permits easy installation and removal. Even with relatively light pressure, the photopolymer plate releases a substantial portion of the coating material when the plate is applied to a workpiece. Consequently, the composition and secondary rollers may be spaced apart by a gap slightly smaller than the thickness of the workpiece. Because of this gap, coating material does not tend to be applied from the plate cylinder to the secondary roller, thus reducing the safety and environmental problems associated with cleaning the secondary roller.

Abstract: A tool and method for applying a texture slurry to a surface is provided. The tool comprises a flat, rectangular body for mating to a smooth surface, such as a repaired portion of drywall. The body has a multiplicity of spatially positioned openings disposed therethrough. Each of the openings has a predetermined configuration and position on the tool, for providing a pattern substantially matching the appearance of existing textured surface adjacent to the smooth surface. The invented method includes first affixing the tool to the smooth area of the surface, then applying a texture slurry to the tool. The spatially positioned openings receive the slurry to apply the slurry to the smooth surface for forming a newly textured area. The spatially positioned openings in the tool enable a user to substantially match the appearance of the newly textured area, with the appearance of the existing adjacent textured surface.

Abstract: A protective film of plastic is applied to a printed-circuit board fitted with electronic components on at least one side. In order to keep some areas free of plastic film, a vat has an exposed rim which corresponds in shape to the outline of the surface(s) to be coated and lies in a single plane. The circuit board is placed, with the side to be partly coated facing inward, against the coplanar rim of the vat and is pressed against the rim defining the shape of the surface(s) to be coated. The vat is subsequently pivoted, together with the circuit board on it, into a position in which the circuit board forms the floor of the vat and liquid coating material contained in the vat spreads over the surface(s) to be coated, wetting them. The vat is then pivoted into a position in which excess coating material can drain off the circuit board.

  • Patent number: 5336319
Abstract: An apparatus for uniformly coating a planar substrate with an adhesive layer has a rotatably mounted sleeve with closed ends to form an internal cavity therein. The sleeve has a plurality of holes therein and its outer surface is covered by a porous layer such as a foam layer. A vacuum is applied to the sleeve cavity, while the sleeve is rotated. One surface of a polymeric film is positioned on the porous layer and held in place by the vacuum acting through the sleeve holes and porous layer. The other surface of the polymeric film contains a uniform adhesive coating. The surface of a planar substrate is tangentially transported past the polymeric film surface with the adhesive layer and in timed registration therewith, so that a nip is formed between the planar substrate and the polymeric film which transfers a uniformly thick portion of adhesive to the planar substrate surface.

Abstract: This invention relates to the treatment of substrates with fluidized material in repetitive patterns during application cycles. The treatment patterns made with this invention can be altered by changing machine operating parameters. The patterns of fluidized material are applied to substrates using an applicator drum. Machined in the outer surface of the applicator drum are a plurality of slots filled with deformable material. The deformable material extends to a position in each slot just short of the outside diameter of the applicator drum, leaving a cavity in each slot. These cavities are filled with slurry in a slurry applicator unit. A compression drum mounted within the hollow interior of the applicator drum uses compression tips to displace the deformable material in each slot in succession beyond the periphery of applicator drum at a position adjacent to the substrate, causing the slurry in the cavity to be applied to the substrate.
