  • Patent number: 5702760
Abstract: A coating system for material webs, specifically of paper or cardboard, includes two mutually parallel rolls directly coordinated with each other, the rolls having a mutually variable spacing such that the rolls can be positioned to create a press gap for coating the web, or so as not to create a press gap. When the rolls are not positioned to form a press gap, the web passes over both roll shells while circumventing the applicators which have already dosed the roll shells with a coating mixture. The web passes over both roll shells for purposes of transferring the coating mixture predosed by the applicators. Solely the web pull in conjunction with the wrap angle of the two roll shells serves the final dosing by scraping off an excess quantity from the roll shells.

  • Patent number: 5057337
Abstract: A pair of solder coating rolls are disposed horizontally adjacent one another for rotation about parallel horizontal axes, and are spaced apart to define a narrow vertically-oriented nip therebetween for accommodating a lead frame therein. Lower parts of the rolls contact a solder bath, and counter rotation of the rolls carries the solder upwardly on the periphery of the rolls to create a small pool of solder at the upper end of the nip. The lead frame is driven vertically upwardly through the nip, which nip has a minimal dimension greater than the lead frame thickness. The lead frame is driven vertically upwardly at a linear speed which is different from, and preferably slower than, the peripheral speed fo the solder coating rolls. This enables preheating of the surface of the lead frame due to its longer exposure to and contact with the hot solder which coats the periphery of the rolls, thereby improving the wetability of the lead frame surface.

  • Patent number: 4605574
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for forming a uniform, extremely thin film on the surface of plastics molded articles, films, sheets, synthetic paper, fibers, metal, and other objects, the film containing an anti-static agent, anti-fogging agent, anti-corrosive agent, mildewproofing agent, and the like. According to the method of the present invention, a homogenous solution or emulsion is prepared by dissolving a surfactant and agents in a solvent such as water with the aid of ultrasonic waves, and the solution is made into aerosol of fine particles by means of cavitation. The aerosol is brought into contact with an object, whereby the fine particles of aerosol are deposited on the object and a thin film of the solution is formed on the surface of the object due to the difference in surface tension between the surfactant and the object. After evaporation of the solvent, the agents are left on the surface of the object in the form of an extremely thin film.

Abstract: Apparatus is provided to allow a liquid penetrable material, such as a gasket part made of compactible gasket material, while being conveyed flatwise along a given path, to be coated with a liquid dispersion of polymer or polymers, by first preheating the liquid penetrable material to a temperature sufficient to prevent any substantial penetration of liquid into the material when the material at the preheated temperature is coated with the liquid dispersion of polymer or polymers. The preheated material is then coated with the liquid dispersion of polymer or polymers in an amount sufficient to form a fluid-impermeable barrier over the material and the coated material is supported on a plurality of pointed projections through a drying section until the coating is in a tack-free condition. After drying the material to a tack-free condition, it is supported on a conveyor through a curing station to cure the coating.

Abstract: Metallic articles, for instance, ferrous strips are metallized, for instance, zinc coated by passing the heated article through a coating chamber and applying thereto a continuous stream of the molten coating metal so as to uniformly and evenly metallize said article. Thereafter, excess molten coating metal is removed from the coated article by hot gas blasting and the hot gas blasted article leaving the coating chamber is immediately cooled. Wiping means may be provided before applying the molten coating metal so as to deflect any molten coating metal dropping from the metallic article passing therethrough, while rollers may be arranged between the coating metal applying means and the hot gas blasting means. Said rollers serve to remove the major part of excess coating metal from the coated metallic article and to stabilize movement of the metallic article passing through the coating chamber.

A pair of power-driven coating rolls are horizontally disposed in the plating chamber, one roll contacting the top surface of a metal strip to be plated and the other contacting the bottom surface. A molten coating metal is continuously supplied so as to form a uniform film of the metal on the peripheral surface of each coating roll. By means of deflector rolls horizontally disposed in the plating chamber, a metal strip heated to a temperature suited for plating continuously travels through the chamber. A surface of the strip becomes plated on contacting the peripheral surface of the coating roll on which the film of the molten coating metal has been formed. The coating rolls can be drawn away from the surface of the strip by shifting the deflector or coating rolls, so that plating can be applied to one, both or neither side of the strip as desired.

Abstract: A strip of sheet metal moves horizontally between upper and lower felt rollers, turning them in opposite directions so that the lower roller continuously picks up oil from an oil bath. Oil is dripped down onto the upper roller from a device which is continuously provided with oil from a reservoir. The distribution device provides for an excess of oil to be bypassed and deposited into the oil bath below, and the level of the oil in the bath is used to control the flow of oil to the distribution device. The device comprises a tension spring so supported above the upper roll that oil from the reservoir flows into one end, and depending upon the spacing between the spring convolutions, a portion flows out through these convolutions, and the remainder is bypassed through the other end into the oil bath. A uniform distribution of oil along the axial extent of the upper roller is made possible by the spring type distribution device.
