Positive acting means are provided for effectuating the direction reversal and electrical switch means are provided for actuating the direction reversal means as well as additional safety features.

    Abstract: A synchronized drive mechanism for a loader and a destacker of a press including a drive shaft connected to a drive unit of the press, and a translating mechanism for translating the rotary motion of the drive shaft into a linear reciprocating motion and a swing motion. The loader is connected to the swing motion and moved thereby in a reciprocating fashion. A converting mechanism is provided for converting the linear reciprocating motion into an intermittent one way rotary motion for rotating a plurality of conveyors of the destacker intermittently in one direction. Thus the intermittent rotary movement of the conveyors is synchronized with the reciprocating movement of the loader thereby feeding blank sheets from the destacker to the loader and to the press to be realized.

    Abstract: A device for feeding sheets of wrapping material from a roll formed of wrapping material web to a packaging machine which discontinuously operates at consecutive cycles. The device includes a transversal cutter provided with cutter blades for cutting single sheets of wrapping material from the web which has a new leading edge after each cut, and at least one intermittent motion feeding group for feeding the web to the cutter. A first independent electric stepping motor drives the feeding group and is controlled by a programmable electronic control circuit which controls the stepping motor to drive the feeding group in accordance with a predetermined sequence of motions in synchronism with the cycles the packaging machine, including momentarily driving the feeding group backwards to withdraw and detach the leading edge of the web from the cutter blades.

    Abstract: An apparatus for varnishing a sheet being fed from a sheet fed printing press into a delivery unit, the sheet being conveyed by an endless loop conveyor made up of a pair of laterally spaced conveyor chains. Cross members extend between the chains at regular intervals carrying grippers for the leading edge of successive sheets. The chains are guided to form a delivery run and a return run spaced apart and generally parallel to one another. An applicator cylinder is journalled between the runs having an axial length which is shorter than the lateral spacing between the chains. A plate cylinder journalled in the frame outside of the return run is in rolling engagement with the applicator cylinder for supplying a varnish film thereto. A backing cylinder journalled in the frame outside of the delivery run is in rolling engagement with the applicator cylinder. The circumference of the cylinders equals the spacing between successive cross members and grippers.

    Abstract: An apparatus for the preparation of blood smear specimens is constructed to successively discharge glass slides from a stack. A first glass slide is laid horizontally near the point of discharge and a second glass slide is discharged into a slanted position with its lower edge in contact with the leading end of horizontal glass slide. A drop of blood is applied near the leading end of the horizontal glass slide behind the position of contact of the glass slide in the slanted position and the horizontal glass slide is advanced to smear the blood onto the horizontal slide using the slanted glass slide as a coater. The slanted glass slide is then allowed to fall into the horizontal position and another glass slide is discharged from the stack into the slanted position, whereafter the process is repeated.

    Abstract: A screen printer has a flat bed coplanar with a loading and an unloading surface on opposite sides thereof, the bed being divided into a stationary middle section and two movable outer sections confronting one another along boundary lines paralleling the direction of movement of copy sheets from the loading surface to the unloading surface. Such movement is effected with the aid of a conveyor comprising two chains underneath the bed entraining sheet-gripping jaws through the gaps formed between these sections when they are transversely separated. The jaws are almost flush with the plane of the bed and the loading and unloading surfaces; upon closure of the bed sections, they are received in cutouts of the outer sections and are thus immobilized while a printing screen descends into contact with a copy sheet overlying the bed.

    Abstract: An inert chemical material comprising primarily paraffin or wax is deposited on a surface of a plurality of sheets of glass and the sheets stacked with the deposited paraffin or wax forming intercalations therebetween. The paraffin or wax material may be deposited in granular or molten form. Advantageously molten material is deposited in spaced drops to form spaced raised spots over the surface of each sheet. Preferred dimensions, melting temperatures, compositions, etc. are given. A first group of spots may be initially deposited of paraffin or wax material having a lower solidification temperature, and thereafter drops having a higher solidification temperature deposited thereon. Apparatus for performing the methods includes one or more heated reservoirs positioned over a conveyor and having a group of nozzles spaced laterally of a sheet of glass on the conveyor and actuated to deposit molten paraffin or wax material drop by drop on the surface of the glass sheet.

The rotational movement of the gluing segment is accelerated and retarded to effect rolling of the pickup surface on the gripping cylinder, by rotating the carrier and gripping cylinder in the same direction and rotating the gluing segment in the opposite direction during the rolling contact.

Means advance the uppermost slide in each magazine forwardly out of the magazine a predetermined distance to facilitate the removal of the slide by hand after the desired smear is made.

    Abstract: A gluing machine employs substantially linear conveying motion and has easily installed change parts, which adapt the machine to handle thin paper or relatively heavy cardboard. A vacuum head with compound motion delivers a sheet of cardboard or paper from a vertical stack by lifting the leading edge and advancing it substantially horizontally between drive rolls which deliver the sheet under a glue roll. A glue spreader roll is mounted on eccentrics for adjusting its spacing from the glue roll. For relatively stiff sheets, a pair of removable presser rolls under the glue roll continuously flex the moving sheet into close contact with the glue roll and the sheet is delivered onto a dual compartment vacuum conveyor for positive ejection and accurately timed delivery to a downstream processing station. The presser rolls are replaced with a fixed bridge for handling flexible sheets, and the vacuum head is rotated while in motion by an air cylinder carried on the support arms for the vacuum head.
