Abstract: A method and system for remediating a lost circulation zone in a wellbore. A flexible liner is deployed adjacent the lost circulation zone that blocks fluid communication between the wellbore and surrounding formation. The liner material has a designated yield and tensile strength, so that in response to pressure applied in the wellbore the liner flexes and conforms to contours in the wellbore. The liner remains intact during deformation to maintain the flow barrier between the wellbore and formation. The liner is set in the wellbore with a bottom hole assembly that includes an outer housing for protecting the liner during the trip downhole. Drill pipe can be used for deploying the bottom hole assembly, and for conveying pressurized fluid for setting the liner. An expander is included with the bottom hole assembly for mechanically conforming the liner to the wellbore sidewalls.

  • Patent number: 4951849
Abstract: An applicator for applying a fluid substance to a drilled hole as part of an automatic fastening machine. The fastener machine drills the hole in the workpiece, such as an aircraft wing panel, and then the substance applicator applies the substance to the hole, prior to subsequent installation of the fastener within the hole. The substance applicator, which is connected to a movable pressure foot, is pneumatically operated so that a head portion of the applicator is extended laterally over the hole, and a tip assembly in the head is extended vertically downward toward the hole. This operational sequence is accomplished by means of variable rate springs which bias the tip assembly and base to retracted positions. The substance is delivered to the tip assembly from a storage reservoir by means of a peristaltic pump. Positive shutoff of the substance to the tip assembly is achieved by a pivotally mounted shutoff arm assembly.

  • Patent number: 4935091
Abstract: The present invention is directed to an improved apparatus and method for manufacturing completed foam plastic containers. An endless mandrel chain carries cup forming mandrels along a manufacturing path. After each mandrel is preheated, a bottom blank is placed on the mandrel bottom and held there by a vacuum. A cylindrical blank formed from longitudinally stretch-oriented foam sheet material is then placed onto the mandrel. This cylindrical blank is tightly tamped onto the mandrel and is clamped in place. Radiant heat is then used to shrink form a finished container. The bottom is then sealed to the cylindrical blank and the mandrel is transferred to a curling assembly where the top edge portion of each finished container is lubricated and then curled to form a finished rim. The apparatus of the present invention may form containers having a dual tapered configuration which allows the containers to be more tightly stacked.

Abstract: A device for applying a protective coating to the weld or solder seam of a can body has an application roller (2) serving to apply a coating material inside a region covering the seam at the inside (15) of the can body. The roller periphery has a cross-sectional profile (5) comprising at least one depression (10) in a middle region (9) of a middle portion (6) having a region width of less than 60% of the width of the middle portion (6). The profile (5) further comprises at least one salient point and/or at least two points of inflection in this middle region (9). The device renders it possible to achieve optimum layer thicknesses of the coating over the seam, which are neither too little for the stresses occurring during the long-term storage of corrosive liquids nor too great for the tearing strength stressing of the coating which occurs during the flanging over of the edges of the can body.

Abstract: Apparatus for coating selected portions of the troughs of a corrugated pipe within an adhesive includes a support disposed within the pipe with a reservoir containing the adhesive disposed on the support. A pump, including a spout, is utilized for supplying the adhesive from the reservoir to a trough of the pipe. A rotatable applicator is supported on the support and contacts the trough of the pipe. The applicator itself is sized so as to fit within the trough, and contacts the adhesive in the trough and spreads the adhesive in the trough upon rotation. A trough shield, supported by the support and disposed in the path of rotation of the applicator, is utilized to prevent the applicator from contacting selected portions of the trough. A locator head is also disposed on the support and provides a way for aligning the spout, the applicator, and the trough shield with the trough.

  • Patent number: 4280864
Abstract: A device and method for applying a semi-liquid adhesive material in a preselected pattern upon a surface such as the inner surface of a container cap such that a liner may be adhesively connected thereto. The device and its manner of operation are particularly suited for the application of hot melt adhesive to container caps of the type having a central recess surrounded by an annular ledge. A member having a longitudinal bore in which a shaft having one or more external helical grooves is rotationally disposed, cooperates to form the applicating device. One end of the member is operationally associated with a supply of semi-liquid adhesive such that rotation of the shaft with respect to the member will force adhesive along the separate helical paths and on to the receiving surface of the cap in the desired configuration.
