Patent number: 6339211Abstract: A temperature differential over a length of a fuser can result from a thermal load applied to the fuser by media having a dimension, corresponding to a longitudinal axis of the fuser, less then the length of the fuser. The temperature on regions of the surface of the fuser contacting the media is lower than on regions of the surface not contacting the media. With feedback used to control the fuser surface temperature near its center, the fuser surface temperature in regions not contacting the media can become hot enough to damage the fuser. With a heat pipe included in the fuser, heat flows from the higher temperature regions on the surface of the fuser to the lower temperature regions on the surface of the fuser, thereby reducing the peak magnitude of the fuser surface temperature and the magnitude of the temperature differential over the length of the fuser.Type: GrantFiled: July 7, 2000Date of Patent: January 15, 2002Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: Wayne E Foote, David J Arcaro, Kenneth E Heath, B. Patent number: 5634184Abstract: A heat and pressure fuser and RAM system therefor. A rotating wick is provided in one disclosed embodiment which cooperates with a metering roll to apply silicone oil release agent to the surface of a heated fuser roll. To this end the rotating wick contacts silicone oil contained in a sump and through its rotation conveys the oil to the metering roll which in turn applies a metered quantity of oil to the surface of the heated fuser roll. In another embodiment, a rotating wick together with a metering roll and a donor roll serve to convey silicone oil from a supply of oil to the surface of the fuser roll.Type: GrantFiled: August 1, 1995Date of Patent: May 27, 1997Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Edul N. Dalal, Robert M. Jacobs, Alvin D. Kromm, Jr.

Patent number: 5625859Abstract: A method and apparatus for preventing oil streaks on color transparencies. To this end release agent material in the form of silicone oil is applied to a heated fuser roll using a two-roll RAM system. The silicone applied to the fuser roll is then metered to a uniform thickness with a metering blade contacting the surface of the fuser roll. The blade is adapted to be engaged with the fuser roll only during the fusing of process color images on transparency material in order to minimize wear of the blade and/or fuser roll surface and to minimize contamination of the blade due to unnecessary contact.Type: GrantFiled: January 6, 1995Date of Patent: April 29, 1997Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventor: Rabin Moser

Patent number: 5609685Abstract: An apparatus for bonding, without adhesive, a plastic material layer onto a backing fabric of any kind, wherein the fabric is biaxially stretched and untreated, includes a calendar and a rocking device. The calendar includes a heated cylinder for coating the fabric with a layer of plastic material. The rocking device includes a preliminary heating element, a front end roll, and a rear end roll. The front end roll and rear end roll guide the stretched fabric onto the heated cylinder of the calendar to control the heating temperature of the stretched fabric in contact with the heated cylinder. The preliminary heating element is interposed between the front end roll and the rear end roll.Type: GrantFiled: March 2, 1995Date of Patent: March 11, 1997Assignee: Interplastic SAInventor: Charly Fux

Patent number: 5597413Abstract: A release agent management system including a metering roll supported for contact with release agent material contained in a sump. The metering roll also contacts a donor brush structure which, in turn, contacts a heated fuser roll member. The ends of the brush structure are provided with a pair of friction devices which contact the surface of the heated fuser roll member and do not contact the metering roll. Thus, the donor brush structure and the heated fuser roll member are frictionally coupled so that positive rotation of the heated fuser roll member imparts rotation to the donor brush structure.Type: GrantFiled: December 7, 1992Date of Patent: January 28, 1997Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventor: Alvin D. Patent number: 5592275Abstract: A fixing device incorporated in an image forming apparatus and for fixing a toner image on recording paper includes a fixing roller in which a heater is installed in the roller, a pressure roller which is held in press contact with the fixing roller, an oil application roller which is held in contact with the fixing roller for applying oil to the fixing roller, an oil supply roller which is held in contact with the oil application roller for applying oil to the oil application roller, an oil application felt which is held in contact with the oil supply roller for applying oil to the oil supply roller, and a driver which rotates the oil application roller such that the oil application roller moves in the same direction as the fixing roller at the contact portion between the fixing roller and the oil application roller. The surface velocity of the oil application roller is lower than the surface velocity of the fixing roller.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 1995Date of Patent: January 7, 1997Assignee: Ricoh Company, Ltd.Inventors: Katsuhiro Echigo, Shigeo Kurotaka

Patent number: 5563695Abstract: An image formation apparatus is disclosed, capable of forming an image on both surfaces of a recording medium. The image formation apparatus is provided with the latent image forming unit for forming an unfixed image on the photosensitive drum, the transfer drum for transferring the unfixed image onto the recording medium, and an oil application device for applying a release agent onto the fixing roller. The release agent applied upon fixing the first surface is different in quantity from that applied upon fixing the second surface and the releasing agent applied to the fixing rotor during single side fixing is different in quantity than when both surfaces are to be fixed. The releasing agent quantity also differs depending on whether the apparatus is in cassette feed mode or manual feed mode and is not applied when the recording medium is in contact with the fixing roller.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 1995Date of Patent: October 8, 1996Assignee: Canon Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Masaaki Sakurai, Tatsuo Takeuchi, Masahiro Inoue, Jiro Ishizuka

Patent number: 5534986Abstract: A separating agent metering device (30) contains a separating agent feed roller (1) which rolls tangentially against the fuser roller (8). In doing so, separating agent from the inside of the separating agent feed roller (1) which has passed to the surface is transferred to the fuser roller (8). The separating agent feed roller (1) contains a carrier tube (6), which is rotatably mounted on a separating agent metering tube (5), and an applicator roller (7) which is arranged on said carrier tube so as to be exchangeable. The applicator roller (7), which contains an applicator sleeve (4) with a layer of material (13) which is permeable to the separating agent attached thereto, can be slid axially over the carrier tube (6).Type: GrantFiled: April 21, 1995Date of Patent: July 9, 1996Assignee: Siemens Nixdorf Informationssysteme AktiengesellschaftInventors: Otmar Irro, Helmut Naeser

Patent number: 5534063Abstract: An apparatus capable of surely removing a toner or similar image forming substance stably cohered to a sheet, and an apparatus for processing a sheet are disclosed. A liquid supply unit uniformly supplies a liquid to a toner carried on the sheet. The sheet infiltrated with the liquid is heated by a toner removing unit to have to the toner thereof softened. As a result, the toner adheres to the surface of an offset member implemented as a belt or a drum. The sheet containing the liquid therein is conveyed to the toner removing unit without creasing, breaking or folding.Type: GrantFiled: July 21, 1994Date of Patent: July 9, 1996Assignee: Ricoh Company, Ltd.Inventors: Tooru Maruyama, Iwao Takahashi, Masatoshi Saito, Shigeru Fujita, Hisao Watanabe, Taro Terashi, Tomoaki Sugawara, Masaru Shinkai, Toshiyuki Kawanishi, Masato Igarashi
