The apparatus employs, as a feature of its recovery and recirculation system, a fluidized bed for agitating and facilitating feeding of the particulate material, thus making the system especially well suited for depositing coatings of abrasive materials, such as vitreous frit.

The apparatus employs a fluidized bed unit in which the fluidization chamber is relatively shallow, and is circumscribed by a marginal portion that conforms closely to the dimensions and configurations of the cavity of the object. The apparatus employs a non-vacuumized powder recovery and recirculation system, and provides a peripheral slot in the marginal portion of the housing for entry of undeposited powder. Coating inside corners of objects is effectively achieved using the method of the invention, and heavy, uniform builds of the particulate material are produced efficiently and at high rates.

  • Patent number: 4869201
Abstract: Can barrels of uniform diameter produced from a can barrel forming device by forming a square-shaped blank into a tubular shape with opposite edges joined linearly, are conveyed successively coaxially in spaced relation at a first speed with the joined areas of the can barrels directed upwardly. Then the can barrels are conveyed at a second speed slower than the first speed such that the open edges of the can barrels are coaxially spaced closely with small gaps left therebetween. Paint is continuously applied to the inner and outer surfaces of the joined areas while the can barrels are being conveyed at the second speed with the open edges of the can barrels being closely spaced by the small gaps.

  • Patent number: 4823732
Abstract: Cup lubricating process and apparatus in which cup-shaped can bodies are controllably conveyed in spaced relationship to each other through a lubrication application chamber. Lubricant is atomized to particle sizes permitting them to be gas borne and introduced into such chamber from a plurality of locations about the travel path for can bodies. Apertures in the bottom wall of such chamber direct lubricant particles directly into the open ends of such can bodies for flow impingement deposition on internal surfaces thereof. Provision is made for augmenting surface deposition by electrically charging at least a portion of the gas-borne lubricant particles in such chamber and electrically grounding can bodies individually during passage through such chamber. Endless loop conveyor means are provided with adjustable features enabling a travel path to be adapted to differing dimension can bodies.

  • Patent number: 4696253
Abstract: The apparatus for forming and applying a substantially strip-shaped powder layer onto a weld seam of a can body, comprises a spray head including a spray chamber. A powder supply device supplies a powder composed of powder particles transported by a carrier gas and in the form of a substantially bundled powder jet into the spray chamber of the spray head. The spray chamber is provided with a spray opening which is open towards the weld seam and is located opposite the weld seam. Structure is provided for establishing a pressure in the spray chamber which is lower than the pressure of the surrounding stmosphere to ensure retention of the bundled powder jet entering the spray chamber and to prevent formation of a spray cloud of the powder particles of the bundled powder jet composed of the powder transported by the carrier gas.

  • Patent number: 4637339
Abstract: An electrode arrangement for a coating installation which functions with the aid of an electric field. The electrode arrangement includes a pair of electrodes for creating an electrostatic field with at least one of the electrodes being fashioned with a sharp edge or tip. The electrode is disposed in a conduit and excess pressure or a vacuum is applied to the conduit with respect to the pressure in the coating chamber of the coating installation in an area of the electrode so that the coating medium is either prevented from coming into contact with the electrode or is suctioned off through the conduit system. By virtue of the provision of the suction removal means for the excess coating medium, the conduit system can be placed in direct communication with the ambient pressure. Additionally, the electrode may be arranged in a vacuum zone of the coating chamber.

  • Patent number: 4608269
Abstract: The inside of a sleeve is positioned over a nozzle having an elongated groove opening immediately at the region of the sleeve to be striped. The sleeve surrounding the nozzle is given a predetermined potential level. A stream of particles is introduced into at least one end of the groove in a direction at least generally parallel to the groove and to the region to be striped. The particles are charged relative to the potential level of the sleeve such that the particles are attracted to the sleeve. A stream of air is also introduced under pressure into the opposite end of the groove in generally the opposite direction. The countercurrent thus produced deflects the stream of powder so it projects generally radially from the nozzle groove, thickly coating the strip region at the seam. The region is the seam of the sleeve which is to be made into a three-part can, in which case the groove is longer than the sleeve.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for electrostatically applying phosphor coatings to the interior surface of fluorescent lamp tubes includes equipment for applying an electrical charge of one polarity to the glass wall and electrical charge of the opposite polarity to the phosphor particles to cause the phosphor particles to adhere to the glass surface until the particles can be heated to bond them to the interior surface of the glass by lehring. By using electrostatic deposition the lehring may be done at a lower temperature than is required with conventional phosphor deposition using organic binders so that U-shaped fluorescent lamps do not experience distortion from the lehring temperature. • Patent number: RE33482
Abstract: A powder spray gun which, in the presently preferred embodiment, is particularly adapted for spraying a particular powder spray onto the interior surfaces of containers and other target objects in a confined area. The apparatus includes a rigid tubular support member and a flexible powder transport tube. The rigid support member carries a high voltage cable having a charging electrode at one end. The flexible tube terminates in a discharge nozzle which may be adjustably mounted to the support member adjacent the charging electrode so as to permit variation of the angle at which the powder is released from the nozzle relative to the longitudinal axis of the support member. Intermediate the discharge nozzle and an upstream portion of the powder transport tube which is connected to the support member, the flexible tube is smoothly curved so as to prevent any sharp corners in the transport tube or the nozzle within which powder could collect and interrupt smooth, even discharge of powder from the gun.
