Patent number: 6422178Abstract: A fuel-fired heating appliance, representatively a gas-fired water heater, has a combustion chamber with an outer wall portion defined by a perforated flame arrestor plate having specially configured louvered combustion air intake openings through which combustion air is flowed into the combustion chamber. The louvered openings function to cause the entering combustion air to undergo directional changes as it inwardly traverses the openings and impart turbulence to the air entering the combustion chamber in a manner substantially inhibiting foreign matter blockage of the plate openings, providing an even combustion air inflow across the perforated plate area, and providing the plate with improved operational temperature uniformity along its sides.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 2001Date of Patent: July 23, 2002Assignee: The Water Heater Industry Joint Research and Development ConsortiumInventors: Eric M. Patent number: 6412447Abstract: Fuel fired power vented and natural draft type water heaters are provided with flammable vapor sensors operative to detect flammable vapors exteriorly adjacent the water heater and responsively preclude fuel flow to the burner portion of the water heater. In each water heater a flow tube is extended between the flammable vapor sensor and the draft structure of the water heater and forms a flow path isolated from the combustion chamber of the water heater. In the event that flammable vapors are present exteriorly adjacent the water heater, the forced or natural draft of the water heater creates a biased flow of flammable vapors which is sequentially drawn across the vapor sensor and through the isolated flow path to the draft structure of the water heater.Type: GrantFiled: April 16, 2001Date of Patent: July 2, 2002Assignee: The Water Heater Industry Joint Research and Development ConsortiumInventors: Troy E. Patent number: 6302063Abstract: A heat trap assembly includes a housing adapted for interconnection between a hot water tank and a water line with the housing including an interior flow chamber. A one-way valve is disposed within the chamber for enabling unrestricted water flow only in one direction through the chamber. The valve includes a valve seat fixed within a chamber along one direction and movable in an opposite direction along with a movable sealing member. A spring is provided for urging the sealing member against the valve seat to prevent flow though the chamber in the opposite direction. Water flow in the one direction compresses the spring and dislodges the sealing member from the valve seat. A pressure relief disk is provided and disposed between the valve seat and the end of the chamber. The pressure relief disk compresses under a selected water pressure exerted in the opposite direction for enabling flow in the opposite direction at pressures greater than a selected water pressure within a hot water tank.Type: GrantFiled: February 9, 2001Date of Patent: October 16, 2001Inventor: Werner Schimmeyer

Patent number: 6295952Abstract: A water heater including a water tank, a combustion chamber beneath the tank, a gas burner in the combustion chamber, an air plenum upstream of the combustion chamber, a flame arrestor located such that air in the air plenum passes through the flame arrestor to reach the combustion chamber, and a flue extending upwardly from the combustion chamber and through the water tank. An inner plate defines the lower boundary of the combustion chamber, and supports the flame arrestor. The inner plate is rolled around the bottom edge of the skirt. A raised ring is formed in the inner plate, and the flame arrestor is seated against the raised ring. An o-ring seal is positioned in a peripheral groove of the flame arrestor to substantially gas-tightly seal the periphery of the flame arrestor with respect to the inner plate. An access door is stamped and fit over a access opening in the skirt.Type: GrantFiled: July 6, 2000Date of Patent: October 2, 2001Assignee: AOS Holding CompanyInventors: Gregory Allen Reynolds, R. Patent number: 6286464Abstract: A water heating system in which the output water temperature is regulated by a mixing valve which allows the temperature of the water contained within the water heater to be maintained at a much higher temperature without compromising safety. Significantly more hot water is therefore available for use yet the maximum temperature supplied to the various points of usage are within the safe limits. The system can be additionally configured to supply unmixed hot water to points of usage where a higher temperature is needed and a user is not exposed to the water such as for example in a dishwasher.Type: GrantFiled: June 9, 2000Date of Patent: September 11, 2001Assignee: Robertshaw Controls CompanyInventors: Anthony W.
