Patent number: 7267326Abstract: An automatic priming system for internal combustion engines, which is operable to prime the carburetor of the engine at engine cranking speeds, and is automatically disabled after the engine starts. The automatic priming system is driven by pressure fluctuations within the engine crankcase which are caused by reciprocation of the piston. At engine cranking speeds, fluid communication of positive and negative pressure pulses between the engine crankcase and an accumulator is allowed via a restrictor. The positive and negative pressure pulses are used to drive an air pump, such as a diaphragm air pump, to pump atmospheric air to the carburetor to pressurize the fuel bowl of the carburetor for priming. After the engine starts and the piston reciprocates more rapidly, the restrictor prevents communication of positive and negative pressure pulses between the crankcase and the accumulator, and the pressure within the accumulator is relatively constant and below atmospheric pressure.Type: GrantFiled: February 3, 2006Date of Patent: September 11, 2007Assignee: Tecumseh Products CompanyInventor: Daniel E. Patent number: 6915772Abstract: An automatic priming system for internal combustion engines, which is operable at engine cranking speeds and which is automatically disabled at engine running speeds. The automatic priming system is driven by pressure fluctuations within the engine crankcase which are caused by reciprocation of the piston. At engine cranking speeds, fluid communication between the engine crankcase and a chamber is substantially equalized, such that positive pressure pulses from the crankcase air space pass from the chamber through a check valve to the carburetor for priming. At engine running speeds, communication between the crankcase air space and the chamber is restricted such that the pressure within the chamber is below atmospheric, positive pressure pulses are not present within the chamber, and the priming function is automatically disabled.Type: GrantFiled: September 9, 2003Date of Patent: July 12, 2005Assignee: Tecumseh Products CompanyInventor: Todd L. Patent number: 6736103Abstract: A system for the management of fuel and fuel vapors in the cold start fuel passageway of an internal combustion engine which has a cold start fuel injector which, when activated, introduces fuel into the cold start fuel passageway. The system includes an engine control unit (ECU) which determines the probability of fuel within the cold start passageway. Different procedures programmed in the ECU are then utilized to dissipate the fuel from the cold start passageway. These procedures include delaying the initiation of the spark ignition for the engine, maintaining the heater associated with the cold start fuel injector activated for a period of time following deactivation of the cold start fuel injector, maintaining revolution of the internal combustion engine for a predetermined time period, as well as other strategies.Type: GrantFiled: October 21, 2002Date of Patent: May 18, 2004Assignee: Hitachi Ltd.Inventors: Frank Warren Hunt, Shigeru Oho, Ayumu Miyajima

Patent number: 6681736Abstract: A starter protective device is provided which is capable of accurately determining the commencement of overrunning (i.e., timing of the commencement of starting of an engine) even in the presence of variations in the cycle of fluctuations in a battery voltage, noise and so on, thereby to prevent a starter from being overrun after starting of an engine in a reliable manner. The starter protective device includes an overrunning determination section 15 for determining when the starter motor 4 commences overrunning; and a starter motor cut-off section for interrupting the main contactor 3 when it is determined that the starter motor 4 commences overrunning. The overrunning determination section 15 detects a change over time of the battery voltage BV after the starter switch 2 has been turned on, and determines that the starter motor 4 commences overrunning when the battery voltage VB remains unchanged without any increase or decrease over a predetermined time T.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 2001Date of Patent: January 27, 2004Assignee: Mitsubishi Denki Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Katsuyuki Sumimoto, Keiichi Komurasaki
