Publication number: 20030041833Abstract: An insert for reinforcing a flange component and an intake manifold for an internal combustion engine in which such an insert is used. The insert (14a) is open toward a longitudinal side (17) of the cylinder head flange (13), so that a mounting bolt does not have to be pushed through the passageways (16) formed by the insert, but can be inserted from the side. This offers advantages during mounting, since the intake manifold can be pushed onto pre-mounted bolts, which are subsequently tightened to fix the intake manifold. The intake manifold and the described insert are therefore particularly suitable for cost-effective mounting in tight spaces.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 30, 2002Publication date: March 6, 2003Applicant: Filterwerk Mann & Hummel GmbHInventor: Timothy Neil Carpenter

Publication number: 20020195075Abstract: An intake device for an internal combustion engine, comprising welded shells joined along a partition line, in which the partition line is provided with a region for producing inclined additional surfaces, which generate a transverse force Q2 due to their inclination relative to a pressure force D applied for welding the shells. This transverse force Q2 offsets a transverse force Q1 which is generated as a result of the inclination of partial regions of the partition line relative to the applied pressure force D. In this way, the transverse forces which arise during production of the intake device may be at least partially offset in the component, so that little or no forces are exerted on the molding tools, and the welding results for the intake pipe may thus be improved.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 31, 2002Publication date: December 26, 2002Applicant: Filterwerk Mann & Hummel GmbHInventors: Arthur Klotz, Ingo Koch, Herbert Pietrowski, Matthias Teschner

Patent number: 6260527Abstract: A power steering fluid reservoir is provided which is formed integrally with an intake manifold. The intake manifold includes an inlet channel for allowing ambient air into the manifold. A plenum is fluidly connected with the inlet channel and the plenum provides a gaseous reservoir. A plurality of runners are fluidly connected with the plenum for distributing air to the cylinders of an engine. Integrally formed with the inlet channel, plenum, and runners is a power steering fluid reservoir. The power steering fluid reservoir is fluidly separated from the intake plenum by a common wall. The common wall allows for continuous cooling of the power steering fluid by an induced flow of ambient air through the plenum.Type: GrantFiled: December 1, 1999Date of Patent: July 17, 2001Assignee: DaimlerChrysler CorporationInventor: John S. Patent number: 6234132Abstract: The invention concerns an intake system, in particular an intake pipe of thermoplastic plastics for the intake air of an internal combustion engine with in particular cylinder rows arranged in a V-shape. The intake system comprises at least two elements (10, 14), the first element (10) having a substantially closed shape and simultaneously forming the lower half-shell of the intake pipes. The second element (14) is designed as the upper half-shell of the intake pipes and is connected to the first element (10) by the plastics welding technique.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 1999Date of Patent: May 22, 2001Assignee: Filterwerk Mann & Hummel GmbHInventors: Edvard Kopec, Klaus Wachsmann, Volker Ernst, Rudolf Leipelt

Patent number: 6216666Abstract: In an intake passage arrangement in an internal combustion engine at least two intake ports located in a cylinder head depart from a common intake flow path. In the area where the flow path branches into the separate intake ports a swirl control device configured as a control flap is positioned, which is rotatable about a rotation axis situated at one end of the control flap. In one position the control flap opens both intake ports, whereas it blocks one intake port in another position. To ensure control of the swirl motion of the intake flow entering the combustion chamber and to permit a most simple and compact design an intermediary part carrying the control flap is essentially configured as a thin, flat frame, and preferably as a die-cast part made of aluminum.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 1999Date of Patent: April 17, 2001Assignee: AVL List GmbHInventors: Thomas Handl, Ralf Marquard

Patent number: 6199530Abstract: A composite air intake manifold assembly adapted for use with an internal combustion engine includes an upper half shell formed from a polymer and a lower half shell formed from a polymer and joined to the upper half shell. The upper half shell formed includes an upper perimeter flange having a pair of side flanges and a pair of end flanges, the side flanges having an inner surface and the end flanges having an inner surface. The lower half shell includes a lower perimeter flange having a pair of side flanges and a pair of end flanges, the side flanges having an inner surface and the end flanges having an inner surface. The lower half shell is joined to the upper half shell to define a housing having an internal cavity.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 1999Date of Patent: March 13, 2001Assignee: Hayes Lemmerz International, Inc.Inventors: David Brassell, Archie Hoebecke, III

Patent number: 6173701Abstract: To protect a plastic intake manifold of an internal combstion engine from heat possessed by exhaust gas recirculation gas, a cooling device is arranged between the plastic intake manifold and an exhaust gas recirculation valve. The cooling device cools the exhaust gas recirculation gas by means of a coolant. A gas discharge part of the cooling device constitutes a pipe portion which penetrates through an exhaust gas inlet hole of the intake manifold keeping a given space between an outer wall of the pipe portion and an inner wall of the exhaust gas inlet hole. The pipe portion may be a leading end portion of an exhaust gas recirculation pipe extending from an exhaust system of the engine.Type: GrantFiled: May 24, 1999Date of Patent: January 16, 2001Assignee: Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.Inventor: Satoshi Azuma
