Abstract: The device comprises sensors for providing electrical signals indicative of the speed of the vehicle, the speed of rotation of the engine, the position of the accelerator pedal and the position of the brake pedal. An electronic monitoring and control unit connected to these sensors, activates actuator devices arranged to turn off the engine when, for a period of time of predetermined duration, the speed of rotation of the engine is less than a first predetermined value, the speed of the vehicle is less than a threshold value, and the accelerator pedal is released. The valve is controlled by the decrease in the speed of the internal combustion engine. In order to adapt the disconnect threshold and the reconnect threshold of the feed of the fuel to the characteristic curve of the internal combustion engine at little expense but nevertheless with a large saving in fuel, the solenoid valve is connected to an outlet line of an idle-speed controller which is provided for the same internal combustion engine. The time response of the controller has at least a differential portion in addition to a proportional portion, but possibly proportional, integral and differential portions. The control valve is an electromagnetic shutoff valve. Abstract: The invention is directed to a safety arrangement for an internal combustion engine having self-ignition where, in the sense of an overall system monitoring, specific signals relating to the operating conditions of the internal combustion engine are continuously monitored. These signals are indicative, for example, of the position of the throttle pedal, the computed rack-travel nominal or desired value, and the rotational speed. The monitored signals are processed and a corrected rack-travel nominal value is generated by means of a minimum-value selection circuit. The corrected rack-travel nominal value signal generated in this manner is fed to the rack controller of an EDC unit. At the same time, a deviation in rack travel is determined utilizing the corrected rack travel nominal value in combination with an actual-value signal of the rack travel fed back from the rack-travel sensor.

Abstract: A fuel quantity control apparatus of a supercharged diesel engine with safety measures comprises a fuel injection pump capable of increasing the fuel quantity according to the degree of supercharging, a detector for detecting the temperature in a combustion chamber or the temperature of the exhaust gas, a control circuit receiving an output of the detector, and a three-way valve driven by the control circuit to control the amount of the increase of the fuel quantity. Through the use of the apparatus when the detected temperature reaches a predetermined abnormal temperature, the amount of increase of the fuel quantity can be made zero or decreased and accidents such as melting or damage of the engine by abnormal rise of the temperature in the combustion chamber or of the temperature of the exhaust gas can be prevented.

Abstract: The invention is directed to a safety arrangement for an internal combustion engine with self-ignition such as a diesel engine or the like wherein the operational signals of throttle position, rack travel and rotational speed are continuously monitored and compared with upper and lower limit values for these signals. From this comparison, comparison signals are generated and are combined with each other to provide an overall monitoring of the operation of the diesel engine so that the latter can be shut off when impermissible ranges of operation are present or, if conditions permit, the engine can be switched to an emergency mode of operation so that the motor vehicle may be driven to the next service station for repair.

Abstract: A fuel supply control method for electronically controlling the quantity of fuel being supplied to an internal combustion engine having a turbocharger, in response to values of engine control parameters including at least pressure in the intake passage of the engine, the method having a fail-safe function for an abnormality in the functioning of a pressure detecting means for detecting the above intake passage pressure. When there occurs an abnormality in the above pressure detecting means and at the same time, if the engine is operating in a predetermined supercharged operating condition, control is effected by interrupting the fuel supply to the engine during an interval of time when a condition is satisfied that an abnormality occurs in the absolute pressure detecting means while simultaneously the engine is operating in the above predetermined supercharged operating condition.

  • Patent number: 4487180
Abstract: An engine has a load detector, or more specifically a threshold load comparator, and also detectors for sensing any abnormality of various factors influencing the normal engine operation. When no abnormality is sensed, the engine is made to operate automatically at a low speed level when the engine load is below the threshold value, and at a high speed level when the load is beyond such value. When any abnormality is sensed, then the engine is emergently halted in a fail-safe manner, thus any damaging disorder in controling circuitry for effecting such emergent halting leads in itself to emergent halting of the engine as well.

  • Patent number: 4476825
Abstract: An engine device that is responsive to low oil pressure to cut off or limit fuel flow to avoid or minimize the chance of engine damage. A spring-biased elongate main valve member includes an axial bore and an override spring-biased ball valve to selectively allow fuel flow through said axial bore. A remote override function is realized by use of a bypass valve controlled by a pneumatic or electrical switch. One embodiment of the remote override uses a pushbutton and a spring-biased hydraulic piston to actuate the bypass valve which allows fuel around the main fuel member. An override lock prevents a mechanical, local (i.e., not remote) override from being changed from an override position back to a normal or off position in the event of insufficient oil pressure.
