Patent number: 4334255Abstract: A protection device for a vehicle-mounted air conditioner compressor wherein an electric current for engaging the electro-magnetic clutch of the air conditioner compressor is also fed through a PTC ceramic resistor disposed between a starter contact of the ignition switch and a terminal of the electro-magnetic clutch during the starting operation of an engine in addition to an operation of the conventional circuit including a compressor relay and a compressor switch.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 1980Date of Patent: June 8, 1982Assignee: Nissan Motor Company, LimitedInventor: Masao Izumi

Patent number: 4329231Abstract: A thermally insulating fuel filter cover provides thermal insulation of the fuel filter of a diesel engine such as is used in the trucking industry. The cover is a flexible cylindrical body of thermal insulating material such as expandable urethane foam which has a closed end, an open end, and a hollow interior portion for receiving the fuel filter. The cover is slidable over the fuel filter and is flexible so as to form a friction fit. The cover encloses the exposed surfaces of the fuel filter and provides thermal insulation to help prevent waxing and freeze-up of the fuel in the fuel filter in cold weather.Type: GrantFiled: October 1, 1979Date of Patent: May 11, 1982Assignee: Mitthoff CorporationInventors: Edward L. Patent number: 4328669Abstract: A vehicle vacuum power system which insures sufficient vacuum power to operate a vacuum brake booster and a vacuum operated road speed control system. Because of the low vacuum, high flow rate needs of a cruise control system, the cruise control is connected directly to the engine manifold through a check valve. A small orifice from the vacuum pump in parallel with engine manifold vacuum provides sufficient vacuum for the cruise control when the manifold vacuum is not sufficient. The vacuum pump is in series with manifold vacuum and is operated in response to a pressure switch which allows the pump to run only when brake booster vacuum is low. Manifold vacuum is sufficient most of the time, but the orifice to the cruise control tends to cause a fast loss of brake booster vacuum, causing the vacuum pump to run when it is not actually needed. The vacuum regulator shuts off the flow through the orifice when it is not needed, considerably reducing the pump operational time.Type: GrantFiled: February 15, 1980Date of Patent: May 11, 1982Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventor: Dewey F. Patent number: 4317107Abstract: A detector for providing an audible indication of the vacuum condition for use in promoting the economic operation of a vehicle including a vacuum detector for detecting the magnitude of the vacuum condition in the manifold vacuum line of a vehicle to effect a switch closure which energizes an audible alarm. The vacuum detector comprises a piston reciprocally mounted within a piston chamber and movable responsive to changes in vacuum. A piston rod is arranged between combination switch and guide means for maintaining the axial alignment of the piston rod and for cooperating with conductive means arranged along the piston rod for establishing a conductive path for energizing the audible alarm when a predetermined vacuum condition is present. The contact design provides automatic silencing of the alarm when the engine is turned off or upon demand of engine power beyond a predetermined value. The small size allows for an out-of-sight dashboard mount without affecting operator recognition of the alarm.Type: GrantFiled: October 30, 1979Date of Patent: February 23, 1982Assignee: Harvey-Westbury Corp.Inventor: Burton C. Patent number: 4315243Abstract: The Unused Fuel Indicator (UFI) comprises a reliable thermo-electric/electronic circuit employing thermocouples attached to the catalytic converter of an emission control system for an automobile engine for providing easy readout of the condition of the automobile engine and the emission control system. A preferred kind of readout is provided by the sequential glowing of light indicators such as light emitting diodes (LEDs) wherein the sequence in which the LEDs are caused to glow, and their color is indicative of the proper functioning (or malfunctioning) of the automobile engine and catalytic converter emission control system. The UFI incrementally indicates the potential heat of pollutants in an automobile engine exhaust, which pollutants are converted by oxidation to heat produced by the catalytic converter. The heat is sensed by thermocouples which are differentially connected with the output of one opposing the output of the other.Type: GrantFiled: September 16, 1980Date of Patent: February 9, 1982Inventor: Willard R. Patent number: RE31947Abstract: A pump such as a vehicle air conditioner compressor has a compressor shaft, a continuously engine-driven flywheel and means such as an electromagnetic clutch for selectively coupling the flywheel to the shaft to operate the pump. The flywheel also provides a permanent magnet field which field rotates with the flywheel and induces in the windings of a relatively stationary annular stator assembly an electric voltage in response to the rotating magnetic field. The pump shaft, annular clutch actuating coil, annular stator assembly, and permanent magnet flywheel are all generally concentrically disposed and in the order stated. The flywheel is driven any time that the engine is running thereby inducing a voltage in the stator windings and that flywheel also drives the exemplary compressor when the clutch is actuated.Type: GrantFiled: January 22, 1982Date of Patent: July 16, 1985Assignee: Tecumseh Products CompanyInventor: James B.
