Patent number: 4476817Abstract: A controlled amount of a fluid (steam or water or a solution of water plus additives) is injected into an internal combustion engine to improve combustion, efficiency, and to reduce emissions. The amount of the fluid injected is controlled in response to engine need. The steam is generated by the heat produced by the engine. Combustion gas temperature is used to control the amount of steam produced by varying the fluid flow through one or more fixed or variable orifice control valves. The steam is injected in a piston engine to cool peak temperatures, to prevent detonation and pre-ignition, to smooth out hot spots, to prevent auto-ignition or dieseling, and to use the vapor energy in the expansion cycle to increase low speed torque and acceleration. The steam is used to cause full retard of the vacuum spark advance during acceleration at full load from low speed, and a large amount of steam is injected at this point in the cycle to prevent pre-ignition and detonation.Type: GrantFiled: July 14, 1983Date of Patent: October 16, 1984Assignee: Owen, Wickersham & Erickson, P.C.Inventor: John E. Patent number: 4402182Abstract: An internal combustion engine in which a compact ring type boiler pack is installed at the top of each cylinder recessed into the cylinder head. Water is pumped through each boiler at a rate proportional to the cylinder temperature, to maintain a proper cooling and steam injection balance, the generated steam being injected peripherally into the cylinder during the last part of the power stroke, timed by the temperature in the boiler pack and the pressure in the cylinder. Boiler feed water is controlled by movement of the inlet valve actuating mechanism of the particular cylinder. The boiler provides multiple stage conversion of the water to steam, the peripheral steam injection providing internal cooling of the cylinder walls without interfering with normal combustion. The steam system is adaptable to existing internal combustion engines and results in reduced fuel consumption, very low pollutant emissions in the exhaust and a very efficient thermal cycle.Type: GrantFiled: July 17, 1981Date of Patent: September 6, 1983Inventor: Hugo S. Patent number: 4290392Abstract: A fuel system for and a method of operating an internal combustion engine wherein an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide is injected into the combustion chamber after a conventional fuel and combustion gas mix (i.e. gasoline-air) has been ignited. The hydrogen peroxide and water charge supplies additional oxygen to insure complete combustion of the hydrocarbon fuel and simultaneously the high energy content present in the hydrogen peroxide serves to boost the power output of the engine. Furthermore, the water in the hydrogen peroxide charge produces a washing effect on the engine combustion chamber which enables combustion to proceed at a lowered temperature which results in lowered NO.sub.x content of the exhaust gas. The more complete fuel combustion brought about by this system also eliminates the need for catalytic converters.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 1979Date of Patent: September 22, 1981Inventor: James R. Dissmore

Patent number: 4177772Abstract: A method of operating a four-stroke internal combustion engine of the carburator or fuel injection type, with one or several reciprocating pistons or one or several rotary pistons wherein during the intake movement of the one or the several pistons an additional gaseous or liquid or gas-liquid mixture fluid is introduced into the cylinder working space through a cylinder side wall aperture in the vicinity of the piston to establish a layer charge overlying the piston. The introduction of this fluid may be effected by suction effects caused by the piston movement. The amount of fluid supplied may be controlled in dependence upon combustion pressure and/or exhaust gas composition. Patent number: 4151814Abstract: An internal combustion engine having a power generating assembly consisting of a piston with a top step, in a similarly-shaped cylinder. This defines a reduced top compression chamber into which fuel is injected and wherein combustion takes place due to the heat of air compressed therein. Water is injected through the top wall of the normal-sized lower cylinder portion, and as the top step of the downwardly moving piston clears this wall, the water is converted into steam. An exhaust duct is connected to the intermediate portion of the cylinder and an air admission duct is connected to the lower portion of the cylinder. When the downwardly-moving piston passes the exhaust port and the air admission port, air intake and scavenging take place. The top step of the piston thus acts as a water admission valve for admitting water to be vaporized into steam into the combustion space.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 1978Date of Patent: May 1, 1979Inventor: Gardner J. Doieg
