Patent number: 9032915Abstract: Various systems are provided for liquid-cooling of an internal combustion engine. In one example, an internal combustion engine includes a cylinder head, a cylinder block coupled to the cylinder head, a first return line fluidically coupled to the cylinder head and to a coolant valve and including a heat exchanger configured to remove heat from coolant, a second return line fluidically coupled to the cylinder block and to the coolant valve, a bypass line branching off from the first return line and fluidically coupled to the coolant valve, and an originating supply line fluidically coupled to the cylinder head, the cylinder block, and the coolant valve, the originating supply line including a pump configured to supply coolant. The coolant valve is configured to control coolant flow through the coolant lines via rotational selection of one of a plurality of working positions.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 2013Date of Patent: May 19, 2015Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLCInventors: Michael Tobergte, Bert Pingen, Bernd Schumacher, Jan Mehring

Patent number: 8627806Abstract: The invention concerns an assembly of a valve body (A) and a seal (11). The valve body (A) includes a gas flow passage (4) and a valve shutter (6) mobile between an open position and a closed position obstructing the movement of the gases in the passage (4). The passage (4) being intended to be connected to a pipe (B) to enable gas to flow between them, the seal (11) being intended to be mounted between the passage (4) and the pipe (B) to provide a gas seal between them. The assembly is characterized in that the seal (11) forms a seat for the valve shutter (6) in the closed position. The seal provides, on the one hand, a seal between the passage and the pipe whether the valve shutter is in the open or the closed position and, on the other hand, a seal for the valve shutter in the closed position.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 2009Date of Patent: January 14, 2014Assignee: Valeo Systemes de Controle MoteurInventors: Aude Festor, Sebastien Adenot, Bastien Rechke

Patent number: 8511262Abstract: A slide-valve device sliding in a predetermined axial direction, includes a valve body having two chambers, the first chamber including a lateral fluid-intake opening and a fluid-outlet opening provided with a normally closed, conditionally opening plug device, the second chamber including first and second lateral fluid-outlet openings, mutually offset in the axial direction. Two inner regions of the second chamber are arranged contiguously in the axial direction and communicate with one another via an opening or an internal passage, and in that the sliding drawer includes a first plug member suitable for selectively plugging the communication opening or the internal communication passage or opening between the two regions and a second plugging member suitable for preventing fluid communication between the second lateral fluid-outlet opening of the second chamber and a first region of the second chamber, within a predetermined range of translation of the sliding drawer.Type: GrantFiled: January 17, 2011Date of Patent: August 20, 2013Assignee: Systemes Moteurs (Societe par Actions Simplifiee)Inventors: Richard Komurian, Christian Adam

Patent number: 6920845Abstract: A multi-port rotary valve used to distribute coolant to an engine cooling system comprises a valve body having a plurality of outlet ports for directing coolant flow to a radiator circuit, a heater circuit, and an auxiliary circuit. An internal gear driven rotary disc includes a gear driven mechanism located on an inner circumference of the rotary disc. The rotary disc includes two apertures positioned on a top surface of the rotary disc for regulating predetermined flow paths and flow rates to the plurality of ports. An inlet housing body which includes an inlet port mates with the valve body and encases the rotary disc. An actuator which is coupled to a drive gear mounted internal to the inlet housing body is responsive to a control signal for transmitting a torque to the internal drive gear for rotating the rotary disc to regulate coolant flow.Type: GrantFiled: August 14, 2003Date of Patent: July 26, 2005Assignee: Visteon Global Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Mark Lelkes, Peter Lengyel, Zheng Lou

Patent number: 6321699Abstract: A rotary valve is disclosed suitable for replacement of poppet valves. The valve is temperature controlled through a combination of heat transfer techniques and means for reducing heat transfer between gas flows and the valve components. Assymetric geometry is used in the seals to reduce wear and friction, and a removable combustion chamber in the valve housing is used to facilitate fabrication, servicing and performances. A prototype of the valve was developed for a 30 cubic inch displacement four-stroke spark-ignition engine. The gas seals and lubricated parts of the rotary valve have been found to remain below 400 degrees Fahrenheit during test runs wherein the valve controlled gas flows and has maintained a brake mean effective pressure of 108 to 121 psi for periods of up to an hour. The valve uses pure rotation, and can be dynamically balanced for operation to the peak RPM permissible with reciprocating pistons. A four-stroke engine converted to rotary valving needs very few parts.Type: GrantFiled: August 25, 1998Date of Patent: November 27, 2001Inventor: Richard Berkeley Britton

Patent number: 6293242Abstract: A complete rotary valve assembly and system is disclosed. The rotary valve includes a generally elongated valve body having first and second ends and a longitudinally extending axis of rotation. The rotary valve is mounted in a housing positioned above a head port of an engine. The rotary valve includes an intake port and an exhaust port defined by a valve body arranged for periodic communication with the head port and combustion chamber as the valve rotates along the axis of rotation. The rotary valve system of the present invention includes a secondary intake port for controlling the flow of intake gases into the rotary valve, a fuel injection system, an improved sealing system, a bifurcated valve body with separated intake and exhaust passages, a cooling and reduced emissions gas exhaust control system, and an adjustable throttle control.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 2000Date of Patent: September 25, 2001Inventor: Isken Kutlucinar
