Abstract: A cooling apparatus includes an engine equipped with a cylinder block and a cylinder head, a flow rate control valve capable of suppressing a cooling capacity of the cylinder head without suppressing a cooling capacity of the cylinder block, and control means that performs a control to suppress the cooling capacity of the cylinder head by controlling the flow rate control valve. The flow rate control valve is cooling capacity control means that controls the cooling capacity of the cylinder head by controlling the flow rate of cooling water that flows through a head side W/J formed in the cylinder head.

Abstract: An engine combustion system is disclosed which includes: a cylinder head having at least two cylinders; an exhaust duct adjoining each cylinder with the exhaust ducts of at least two cylinders converging to form an exhaust manifold within the cylinder head and two turbines arranged downstream of the exhaust manifold. In one embodiment, the two turbines are arranged in parallel with a control element disposed upstream of one of the turbines to close off flow to the one turbine. Alternatively, a first of the turbines has a first bypass duct having a first valve. Flow exiting the turbine and the bypass path converge and are provided to a second of the turbines that has a second bypass duct having a second valve. By controlling positions of each valve, flow can provided solely to the associated turbine, the associated bypass duct, or a combination.

  • Patent number: 8146544
Abstract: A method of forming a cylinder head includes casting the cylinder head to include an integral cast-in exhaust manifold. The integral cast-in exhaust manifold defines an intermediate exhaust gas passage in fluid communication with exhaust ports and an exhaust gas outlet passage in fluid communication with the intermediate exhaust gas passage. The cast cylinder head includes a coolant cavity to receive a cooling fluid. The coolant cavity includes first and second portions extending around an outer circumference of the exhaust gas outlet passage separated from one another by a first cast-in wall. The method further includes machining the first cast-in wall to provide fluid communication between the first and second portions of the coolant cavity. Machining the first cast-in wall forms a first coolant passage created by the first and second portions of the coolant cavity and the machined passage around the outer circumference of the exhaust gas outlet passage.
