A case has a lower portion releasibly fitted around a spark plug mounted to a cylinder head of the engine. First and second bobbins having coils wound thereon are mounted concentrically in the case and a C-shaped core is positioned outside of the case and has distal ends fitted in the bobbins. An ignition head cover removably mounted to the cylinder head cover of the engine supports the core when the lower portion of the case is fitted around a spark plug.

Abstract: A protective case (13) for a vehicle ignition system covers both the ignition coil (5), an electronic control device (6), and the terminals (11) and connecting conductors (12) therebetween. The preferred material is plastic, with an electromagnetically conducting coating for screening against incoming and outing electromagnetic noise. Thus, protection is provided against mechanical, chemical, and electromagnetic environmental influences. The case is dimensioned to snap over and seal respective edges of the electronic control device (6), the ignition coil (5) and its core (8), the electrical terminals (11), and the interconnecting conductors (12). The case is bifurcated along an access slit (16) which is secured in a normally closed position by knob (15) which press-fits into a mating hole on the other side of the slit. Two sides of the case have curved ridges or dimples which provide flexibility to hinge the case open for insertion of the ignition coil (5) and electronic control device (6).

  • Patent number: 4846129
Abstract: This invention relates to a number of improvements in ignition systems of spark ignition engines. A detector is employed to sense the first or "breakdown" phase of spark discharge across the spark plug which causes a short duration high current flow across the plug gap. The detection of the breakdown current enables control over a number of ignition system functions. A pulse transformer is used which enables extremely short duration energization of the spark plug at controllable voltages. The existence of end gas auto-ignition is detected by energizing the spark plug during a period of the operating cycle after top dead center of piston travel. Since the threshold voltage necessary to generate spark discharge at the plug differs in conditions where auto-ignition is occurring versus ordinary combustion, sensing of plug breakdown during such energization provides a means of detecting the occurrence of auto-ignition.

Abstract: An electromagnetic coil operates a fuel injector valve and generates a high voltage pulse to ignite a spark plug in an internal combustion engine. The primary and secondary windings of a coil are disposed between inner and outer cores. Electric current flowing at a first level through the primary winding induces magnetic flux in a first flux path to move a fuel flow control member to open a fuel flow path between a fuel inlet and a fuel outlet in the fuel injector valve. Current flowing at a second higher level through the primary winding induces a higher level of magnetic flux in a second flux path to move the fuel flow control member to a position closing the fuel flow path. A controller generates the first and second primary winding currents at the proper time in the engine operating cycle in response to engine operating conditions.
