Patent number: 5273011Abstract: An arrangement for converting linear motion from a power source to rotary motion, wherein the power source is intended to coact with a cam curve so as to generate rotary motion, the rotary motion being performed by an axle; wherein the arrangement includes a rod (4) or corresponding element which is connected to a piston (31) mounted for reciprocating movement in a cylinder (30; 50) through the action of a pressure medium which is intended to act on that side of the piston (31) which is opposite to that side on which the rod (4) is connected to the piston, and further comprises the cam curve (2) which is mounted on one end of the rod (4) and which has curved parts (5) solely on that side thereof which faces away from the rod (4), and wherein the arrangement includes second means which comprises two opposing wing-shaped parts (6, 7) which project outwards away from the axle and which are firmly connected to the axle (3), and wherein a roller (8, 9) is mounted on the outer part of each of the wing-shaped partsType: GrantFiled: October 22, 1992Date of Patent: December 28, 1993Inventor: Hans Karlsson

Patent number: 5233949Abstract: A balanced motor two-stroke cycle engine having a linear drive includes a sealed gearcase secured to a cylinder housing having a plurality of concentric cylinders. The sealed gearcase includes a fixed ring gear, a pinion gear whose diameter is equal to the radius of the ring gear, a hub on which a piston rod is journaled for rotation, and two sets of counterweights. The piston rod moves in a linear fashion as the pinion gear rotates inside the fixed ring gear. The piston rod extends into the innermost cylinder, and a piston secured to the piston rod reciprocates linearly in the innermost cylinder. A chamber between the piston and the gearcase receives a flow of air and the air is transferred to the cylinder beneath the piston through a plurality of ports or apertures for compression. Fuel is injected into the cylinder from a pump chamber by a diaphragm that moves in response to air pressure in the cylinder beneath the piston.Type: GrantFiled: October 26, 1992Date of Patent: August 10, 1993Inventor: Richard D. Rucker

Patent number: 5201286Abstract: A two-stroke cycle internal combustion engine including a crankshaft, a connecting rod pivotally connected to the crankshaft, a fuel induction system and spark plug or the like. The cylinder has a closed head end and a closed rearward end and a piston within the cylinder defines a combustion chamber as well as a charging chamber. A plurality of radial inlet ports formed in the cylinder wall is normally closed by the piston but is opened to the charging chamber when the piston passes through its top dead center position. A plurality of radial exhaust ports also is formed in the cylinder wall and is normally closed by the piston but opened to the combustion chamber as the piston passes through its bottom dead center position. An axial valve port is formed in the crown of the piston to communicate between the charging chamber and the combustion chamber. An operating rod mounted in the cylinder has a valve head formed on its inner end to close the valve port.Type: GrantFiled: March 18, 1992Date of Patent: April 13, 1993Assignee: Malibu CorporationInventor: Eugene E. Kerrigan

Patent number: 5193500Abstract: An internal combustion engine including an engine block defining first and second cylinders with first and second crankcases associated with the first and second cylinders. An oil passageway communicates with each of the crankcases and a conduit is connected to the oil passageway to supply oil to the crankcases. A check valve is located in either the oil passageway or the conduit.Type: GrantFiled: February 11, 1991Date of Patent: March 16, 1993Assignee: Outboard Marine CorporationInventor: Gerald Haft

Patent number: 5167208Abstract: An internal combustion engine is arranged with an elongate piston rod, with the piston fixedly mounted substantially medially of the rod, with an upper distal end of the rod including an oil reservoir chamber piston reciprocatably mounted within the oil reservoir chamber. The piston defines a combustion chamber between the piston and a crank case member rotatably mounting a crank shaft, with the piston rod rotatably mounted to the crank shaft at a lower distal end of the piston. Oil flow is directed through an oil delivery conduit into the oil reservoir chamber and through a conduit within the piston rod to enhance cooling of the piston maintaining its longevity during use.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 1992Date of Patent: December 1, 1992Inventor: Randolph R. Rasiah

Patent number: 5027757Abstract: A cylinder for an internal-combustion two-stroke engine, having multiple intake ports, multiple intake valve ports and multiple exhaust ports. The cylinder enables a two-stroke engine to run on gasoline without premixing it with lubricating oil and, due to its optimal volumetric efficiency and good separation of air-fuel mixture and exhaust gases, provides the possibility to satisfy requirements for high fuel efficiency, high power output and low emissions released into the atmosphere. An engine using this cylinder construction will be lightweight, will not require valve trains and camshaft and can be manufactured with any number of cylinders. Utilizing a slightly different process and slightly different configuration, the present invention will also enable a two-stroke engine to run on diesel fuel and produce significant benefits in comparison to existing two-stroke diesel engines.Type: GrantFiled: July 10, 1989Date of Patent: July 2, 1991Inventor: Pavo Pusic

Patent number: 4936269Abstract: A method and apparatus for reducing oil consumption and oil deterioration in a reciprocating engine. The engine is provided with ceramic rings and ceramic cylinder linings. Minimal oil lubricant is adsorbed on the surface layer of the rings and liners to form a lubricating boundary-film on the rings and linings. Excess oil lubricant is restricted from entering the piston ring/cylinder lining region to preclude the formation of a hydrodynamic, full film lubricant layer between the rings and linings. Several engine designs are disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: June 1, 1989Date of Patent: June 26, 1990Assignee: Southwest Research InstituteInventor: Kevin D. Beaty
