Patent number: 5934228Abstract: A two stroke engine having a variable compression ratio combustion chamber wherein the size of the combustion chamber is changed by threading a closure into or out of the combustion chamber. The combustion chamber is defined by the inside surface of a sleeve, the top surface of a piston, and the bottom surface of the closure. The piston and the sleeve reciprocate within the engine block in a not quite opposite manner. Inlet ports and outlet ports in the sleeve and engine block regulate the flow of gas into and out of the combustion chamber. The engine is equipped with a turbocharger system to provide air to the engine, and the engine is fuel injected.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 1997Date of Patent: August 10, 1999Inventor: Fred O. Patent number: 5605120Abstract: A process and apparatus for setting the compression ratio of an internal combustion engine by changing the relative distance between the axis of rotation of the engine crankshaft and the engine cylinder head surface delimiting the end of each cylinder in the engine. Relative displacement between the rotational axis of the crankshaft and the cylinder head is effected along a predetermined path that has components both parallel and transverse to the longitudinal axis of each of the engine cylinders. The crankshaft is held with its rotational axis stationary in relation to the engine mountings and the vehicle in which the engine is mounted, and the cylinder head is displaced along the predetermined path together with the cylinder.Type: GrantFiled: February 9, 1995Date of Patent: February 25, 1997Assignee: Fanja Ltd.Inventor: Lars Hedelin

Patent number: 5562069Abstract: Method and adjusting device for varying the compression of an internal combustion engine with a cylinder receiving section (2) which is pivotably mounted in the crankcase section (4) of the engine supporting the crankshaft, about a tilting shaft bearing (8) on one side of the engine, to effect a variation in the engine compression. A tilting mechanism (70) acting between the crankcase section and the cylinder receiving section is arranged on the side of the engine opposite the tilting shaft bearing (8), enabling the distance between the two engine parts to be varied. A hydraulic adjusting device (76, 78) is connected to the tilting mechanism (70) for adjusting the lateral tilting of the cylinder receiving section (2) relative to the crankcase section (4).Type: GrantFiled: November 3, 1994Date of Patent: October 8, 1996Assignee: Saab Automobile AktiebolagInventors: Per Gillbrand, Lars Bergsten

Patent number: 5329893Abstract: An internal combustion engine (10) is designed with a cylinder section (11) which is pivoted on a crankcase section (13) to provide different compression ratios. The crankcase section (13) is provided with raised lateral walls (21, 22, 24, 25) with upper surfaces (82-85), which lie in the same plane and thereby allow simple assembly of a seal (34) between the cylinder section (11) and crankcase section (13). The lateral walls (21, 22, 24, 25) also enable auxiliary devices for the engine to be easily secured without having to allow for the mobility of the cylinder section (11) relative to the crankcase section (13).Type: GrantFiled: August 3, 1993Date of Patent: July 19, 1994Assignee: SAAB Automobile AktiebolagInventors: Hans Drangel, Per-Inge Nilsson, Lars Bergsten

Patent number: 5197432Abstract: Engines are needed to perform a variety of functions in a variety of horsepowers. The subject method of obtaining a longer stroke on an existing engine makes it possible to increase the horsepower capabilities without replacing or modifying the cylinder block or cylinder head. The method includes replacing the existing crankshaft with a crankshaft having a larger throw "T" to increase the stroke length of the engine. In order to compensate for the increased stroke length, a spacer is provided. In addition, the existing connecting rod with the outer swing path "S" is replaced with a connecting rod having an outer swing path "S". In order to avoid interference with the block the existing connecting rod bolts are replaced with connecting rod bolts having reduced diameter shanks and angularly disposing the bolts in relation to a connecting rod axis.Type: GrantFiled: May 5, 1992Date of Patent: March 30, 1993Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventor: Benny Ballheimer

Patent number: 4873947Abstract: A variable compression ratio, direct injection engine. A rotatable collar in operative engagement with a cylinder liner holder assembly is utilized to raise and lower the cylinder liner relative to the crankshaft, thereby varying the compression ratio. A double chain drive mechanism maintains a constant valve timing relationship as the cylinder liner is raised and lowered. The head assembly is provided with a removable fire deck and a tapered intake port.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 1988Date of Patent: October 17, 1989Assignee: Southwest Research InstituteInventors: Thomas W. Patent number: 4174683Abstract: A variable expansion ratio internal combustion engine equipped with throttleless induction control and intake valve mechanism operable to induct an ambient pressure charge varying with load demand. Maximum compression pressure is preferably somewhat below that which produces combustion detonation. Constant compression ratio from idling through full load conditions is maintained by varying the clearance volume inversely with load demand. Charge induction at ambient pressure is provided with a throttleless carburetor and is manually controlled by a servo-power operator functioning to synchronize a linkage interconnecting the intake valve mechanism with mechanism for varying the cylinder clearance volume. This linkage operates to variably control closure of the intake valve during the intake stroke or, alternatively, to close the intake valve during the initial phase of the compression stroke.Type: GrantFiled: January 20, 1978Date of Patent: November 20, 1979Inventor: Howard C. Vivian

Patent number: 4164916Abstract: Concentric outer and inner pistons are provided in each cylinder of a four cycle, reciprocating, internal combustion engine. A magnet restrains each outer piston against displacement by pressure of the fuel mixture in the cylinder, so that the outer piston does not move while the engine is under low load. However, while the engine is under substantial load the magnetic restraint is overcome and the outer piston is displaced by pressure of the fuel mixture in the cylinder.Type: GrantFiled: August 7, 1978Date of Patent: August 21, 1979Inventor: Robert P. Wuerfel

Patent number: 4148284Abstract: A two-part variable compression ratio cylinder is provided having inner and outer sleeves wherein relative movement between the sleeves varies the volume of the combustion chamber and hence varies the compression ratio of the engine. Hydraulic means responsive to the pressure in the combustion chamber automatically varies the position of the inner and outer sleeves to regulate the combustion chamber volume. The hydraulic controls are located entirely in the cylinder head facilitating the conversion of any internal combustion engine without altering the piston size.Type: GrantFiled: February 10, 1977Date of Patent: April 10, 1979Assignee: Promac CorporationInventor: Gildo G.
