  • Patent number: 6155184
Abstract: A process wherein primary air supplied to the combustion bed through the thrust combustion grate is deflected after exiting from a surface of the thrust combustion grate by deflector elements mounted on the surface of the thrust combustion grate. The grate required for this purpose has grate plates made from a permeable hollow element with connection pieces for supplying and draining cooling water, with primary air supply ducts that run through the grate plate from a bottom to a top. Deflector elements against which the primary air exiting the outlet is intended to impact, are disposed over openings of the primary air supply ducts.

  • Patent number: 6102032
Abstract: A fire log arrangement for use in conjunction with a combustible fuel source and influences complete combustion of the combustible fuel. The fire log arrangement includes a first log and a second log. The first log and the second log define an interior face. The second log is spaced apart from the first log such that a fuel space is defined therebetween. The fuel space receives the combustible fuel therein and defines a fire chamber at a lower end thereof. The first log interior face and the second log interior face cooperate to induce the combustible fuel to fall inward between the first log and the second log thereby inducing a thorough combustion of the combustible fuel.

  • Patent number: 5992334
Abstract: A loose-material grate includes a grate surface for receiving loose material and a chamber arrangement below the grate surface supplies the grate surface with a gas, for example cooling air. A lattice arrangement with adjustable openings is provided spaced from the grate surface. The adjustable openings communicate with grate surface openings of the associated grate surface. The lattice arrangement preferably is divided into several lattice sections, which have openings adjusted independently from one another, whereby the adjustable openings of the lattice sections, each sealed off from other lattice sections, communicate with the grate surface openings of associated areas of the grate surface. • Patent number: 5076253
Abstract: The burner is intended for combustion of wood logs or other similar solid fuels. The burner which will be called the basket burner is shaped as an open inclined basket (1) comprising a bottom plate (3) and a backing plate (4) which are inclined towards the horizontal plane, respectively the vertical plane, so that the connection between the bottom plate and the backing plate constitutes the lowest part of the basket. The backing plate forms a chute or hold for the package of wood logs. The two plates contain holes (8) for air. The fuel is piled up against the backing plate and is supported by the bottom plate so as to form a compact bundle or parallel wood logs with minimized surface/volume ratio. The design of the basket burner makes the wood logs serve as efficient supporting burners for each other. Thanks to the shape of the basket burner the burning wood logs are successively brought towards each other and towards the lowest part of the basket burner during the combustion.

The log holder is comprised of parallel log supports having a very rough top surfaces so as to minimize rolling and slippage of the logs. Attached to the front of the log supports is the alarm mechanism which includes metal uprights having eyes in their upper ends. An elongated hollow metal tube spans the eyes of the uprights and is loosely received within them. During the course of combustion as logs shift and are partially consumed, any forwardly shifting log will precipitously contact the metal uprights or the metal tube and cause the tube and uprights to strike together. This rapid striking action generates a loud noise which serves to notify the occupants of the dwelling that log shifting has occurred and that a dangerous repositioning of burning logs demands their attention.

Abstract: A movable grate comprising a number of grate steps which are arranged adjacent each other, partly overlap one another and are pivotable around an axis extending in the longitudinal direction of said grate step, and which are pivotably mounted outside shield members (7, 10) which in lateral direction enclose a combustion chamber, end plates (5) being rigidly secured to the ends of the grate steps and swingable therewith, the end plates being aligned with and fitted in openings in the shield members. The novel matter of the invention resides in that portions (10) of the shield members having such openings aligned with the end plates (5), are displaceably mounted relative to adjoining shield members (7) in the direction of the grate step axis, and that the shield portions (10) which outwardly sealingly engage adjoining shield members (7) and inwardly sealingly engage the end plates (5), are in the direction of said axis rigidly secured to the grate step shaft.

  • Patent number: 4955362
Abstract: A product for use with a fireplace grate comprising a sheet of metal, preferably of mild steel, adapted to fit into a fireplace and cover the upper surface of the grate normally used therein. The sheet is bent upward at its long edges or otherwise formed so that the upper face thereof when laid flat on a grate is concave. The sheet has evenly spaced holes or apertures through its entire area to permit the free and uniform flow of air through it. The sheet is sufficiently strong to hold the fuel to be burned in the fireplace and is of a thickness, or gauge, sufficient to withstand premature destruction in use.

Abstract: A furnace grate structure for a furnace or incinerator on which solid fuel advances in an advancing direction has at least two parallel grate beams extending substantially transversely to the advancing direction, the beams being mounted on a substructure and forming upwardly facing support structures. The grate beams form grate beam sections with gaps formed between the end surfaces of adjacent grate beam sections. The gaps are covered by a covering device and a recess is provided in the end surfaces of the grate beam sections to receive the covering device.

Abstract: A hearth grate comprises a succession of transverse bars which are alternately fixed and movable with a reciprocating movement, said bars being formed by disposing in side-by-side relationship at vertical lateral faces elements which are generally rectangular, with a projection portion at the junction of a frontal face and a dorsal face and in the dorsal face blowing orifices opening in said projection portion. The elements are held by the insertion into openings provided in the frontal faces of limbs of a fastener. The fastener comprises a transverse portion which is disposed in set-back relationship with respect to the frontal faces. Plate portions are welded over the openings to retain the fastener.

Abstract: Newspaper or the like is prepared for burning by folding and rolling operations to provide its complete combustion. The paper is folded such that one edge is placed parallel to and spaced from the opposite edge. The folded paper is then rolled to form a cylindrical fuel element. The cylindrical fuel element is advantageously placed in a fixture retaining its rolled and folded condition during binding. The fixture includes a first and second end supports forming a rectangular channel receiving the cylindrical fuel element. A connecting member maintains the supports relative to each other. A constricting member is positioned in the channel which reduces the width of the channel to maintain the fuel element in its rolled condition. The fuel elements may be in the form of kindling sticks, or bundles of such sticks, or individual logs.

Abstract: A depot for granular carbonaceous fuel is shown including a refractory matrix containing the granular fuel. The refractory matrix includes either one or more baskets of screen material or a refractory binder. Vertical flues are included in the matrix for upward flow of air therethrough during combustion of the granular fuel. A manifold below the matrix supplies air for the vertical flues. Granular fuel and ashes thereof are prevented by the refractory matrix from moving into the flues whereby the flues remain open during combustion of the granular fuel. The fuel may include a relatively large amount of anthracite to provide for a low cost fire. A granular fuel mixture that includes 60 wt % to 80 wt % Buckwheat anthracite and 40 wt % to 20 wt % of charcoal having a size of 35 to 85 mesh Tyler scale is disclosed.
