  • Patent number: 7798891
Abstract: A venting apparatus includes a projecting member with a projection base, and a mating socket member with a socket base, and first and second ducts in fluid communication with an appliance to vent emissions along an emission flow path. The projection base engages a first one, and the socket base engages a respective other one, of the first and second ducts. The projecting and socket members have default configurations. The projecting member is movable from the default configuration towards a deflected configuration, and biased for return therefrom. The first and second ducts are movable between sliding and locked configurations. In the sliding configuration, the projecting and socket members bear against one another, with the projecting member removed from the default configuration. In the locked configuration, the projecting member is in the default configuration, and secured to the socket member, such that the second duct securely engages the first duct.

  • Patent number: 7757686
Abstract: The combination of a vent assembly with a conduit assembly bounding a flow space into which discharged combustion gases are exhausted. The conduit assembly has a first conduit length in which: a) combustion gases are communicated in a first direction in a first path between the flue outlet and a vent outlet; and b) backflow is communicated in the first path in a direction opposite to the first direction. The conduit assembly has a draft control assembly, with a conduit portion defining a flow passage in which backflow is diverted out of the first path. The draft control assembly further has a flow guide assembly that intercepts and guidingly diverts the backflow into the conduit portion to be exhausted.

  • Patent number: 7665457
Abstract: An improved wall thimble is useful as part of a venting apparatus for a direct vent heating appliance. Dual functionality is provided in a single wall thimble device by having a vent path for exhausting combustion by-products, and a separate air inlet path to draw in outside combustion air for use by the heating appliance. The wall thimble is formed as a two-part housing such that a first cylindrical portion can be inserted into a second cylindrical portion. When a smaller diameter exhaust pipe is routed through the cylindrical portions, an annular region is formed between the exhaust pipe and the cylindrical portions. A first air vent is formed in the first cylindrical portion to draw combustion air into the annular region from outside. A second air vent is formed in the second cylindrical portion to route the combustion air from the annular region to an opening in the housing where a combustion air inlet pipe is connected.

  • Publication number: 20090199845
Abstract: The present invention relates to a folding chimney flue cap [1000] for fitting chimneys. The folding flue cap [1000] is manufactured as a flat body [1100] having an end panel [1140], a side panel [1160], another end panel [1150], and another side panel [1170], separated by fold lines [1180] between the panels. The folding chimney flue cap [1000] also includes top tabs [1120] above each of these panels. There are also bottom tabs [1130] below each of these panels. The flat body [1100] has a first connector part [1210] at one end and a second connector part [1220] on the other end. The folding flue cap [1000] may be readily shipped in its compact form and assembled into a box shape connecting first connector part [1210] to second connector part [1220]. The top tabs [1120] and the bottom tabs [1130] may be bent either inwardly or outwardly to better match the structures to which it would connect.

  • Patent number: 5249567
Abstract: A fireplace assembly is disclosed which provides a simplistic assembly technique that enables construction of numerous different fireplace models with a minimum of unique parts. These can be constructed into a desired form without the use of a frame. The internal components of the fireplace are secured to each other in such a manner that a frame is unnecessary. These components are also constructed such that many of them are interchangeable to enable fabrication of various types of fireplaces, such as see-through, cove, island and bay type fireplaces. A pair of combustion dome assemblies, each of which includes an upwardly extending nozzle, creates a significant upward suction within the combustion chamber. This provides superior air flow and combustion together with greater safety.

  • Patent number: 5020512
Abstract: A water heater including a water tight tank having a tank wall and top and bottom head members welded thereto. A combustion chamber and burner are mounted beneath the bottom head. A pair of concentrically arranged jacket members are mounted around the tank wall with the space between the jacket members serving as a flow passageway through which combustion air flows downwardly to the combustion chamber. A pair of concentrically arranged tube assemblies are connected to the top of the heater. The inside tube assemblies carry products of combustion from the heater and the space between the inside tube assemblies and the outside tube assemblies serve as a flow passageway through which combustion air flows to the flow passageway space between the jacket members.

  • Patent number: 4957098
Abstract: An improved fireplace unit adapted to fit flush within the wall of a dwelling is disclosed. The fireplace unit comprises duct means for ducting cooling air entirely around the inner wall of the unit and especially around the front lateral edges and top, whereby flammable building materials can be brought into close juxtaposition with the unit without substantial danger of fire. Plural ducts are provided for cooling the rear wall of the unit, having inlets at the bottom rear of the fireplace unit, extending upwardly along the rear wall of the unit, and forwardly around the chimney, further cooling this area. The top wall of the unit comprises an integral support member and thermal break which allows the unit to support a conventional chimney without further support structure and provides a substantial thermal break between the chimney and the front wall of the unit.

  • Patent number: 4765308
Abstract: A venting system using natural convection cooling is disclosed in which a sleeve is inserted within a flue pipe. The annulus between that sleeve and the flue pipe is sealed at an inside end and the flue pipe is provided with a plurality of vent holes in the periphery of its outer end, which is positioned outside a building. That annulus forms a cooling passage and outside air is drawn through the annulus by a natural convection process to dramatically lower the flue pipe temperature. The outer end of that sleeve is open to a vent hood. An outer wall sleeve is also positioned around the flue pipe and sealed at one end in order to form an annulus containing an insulating air layer. That reduces the heat conduction to the outer wall sleeve, substantially reducing the outer wall sleeve temperature. The venting system also includes a vent hood having a double hood in which the outermost hood is spaced from the inner one.

  • Patent number: 4719901
Abstract: There is provided a non-flammable pass-through unit for installation in new construction or as a substitute for a removed section of existing flammable wall in a building for the purpose of allowing the safe installation of a heating appliance, such as a wood or coal stove, and which will reduce the required clearances from a heating appliance to the wall in registry with a flue opening in an existing chimney located behind the wall. The unit comprises a frame composed of non-flammable vertical and horizontal galvanized sheet metal mambers. The metal frame defines an opening which, when the frame is installed, is centered on the axis of the chimney flue opening. A heat resistant, non-flammable tunnel is fitted into the opening and is butted against the chimney.

  • Patent number: 4463748
Abstract: An insulating apparatus for mounting within a wall opening and for receiving therein a flue thimble. The apparatus includes a double-walled, cylindrical body member within which the flue thimble is received. The body member defines an annular insulating chamber closed at one end and open at the other to permit air circulation therethrough. A flange extends ouwardly from one end of the body member and is sized to cover the opening of the wall. A cover plate is mounted over the body member and includes a central opening for reception of a vent pipe therein. The cover plate also includes apertures which overlie the open end of the annular chamber to provide air access thereto.

  • Patent number: 4399805
Abstract: Protective panels are disclosed for insulating walls and other combustible surfaces from a nearby stove or other heating device. Simple, economical shallow U-shaped pieces, one positioned upon the other, create two distinct conduits through which air flows upwardly. Also, the panels reflect radiant heat back towards the stove or other heat source and away from the area protected. A plurality of these double conduit panel members provide an insulating barrier between the heat source and the combustible surface to cover areas of any desired size.
