Wrappers Holders And Carriers Patents (Class 131/105)
  • Patent number: 4016887
Abstract: A tobacco smoke filter for use with a cigarette comprising a tube having a conical disc at its upstream end adjacent the tobacco. A capillary orifice through the apex of the conical disc permits discharge of tobacco smoke from the cigarette at high velocity into a downstream chamber for sublimation of alkaloids and other harmful matter to solid particles by rapid expansion. A parabolic disc is positioned in line with the high velocity jet to trap the solid particles and reverse flow to promote turbulence. The disc has a periphery closely adjacent the inner wall of the tube to promote a high speed flow around its edge. The resulting turbulence causes additional deposition of solids on the disc's downstream face. A tube integral with the disc extends to a circular opening in the downstream end of the tube for discharge of filtered smoke.

  • Patent number: 3994306
Abstract: Tobacco smoke filters having a composite substantially cylindrical inner member formed from two semi-cylindrical inner elements and overwrapped with a common plug wrap. The composite inner member has a discrete inner cavity formed in each semi-cylindrical element and a composite cavity formed by a depressed portion in each semi-cylindrical element. A substantially smooth outer surface is provided on the composite inner member for attaching a conventional plug wrap without the need for an internal glue line. Separate cylindrical elements are reformed into semi-cylindrical elements and crimped to provide depressed pockets, following which the semi-cylindrical elements are mated and overwrapped to produce the final product.

  • Patent number: 3964493
Abstract: A filtered cigarette including a forward portion, a strainer and a filter, in which the filter is of molded plastic, having one or a plurality of surfaces provided with interconnected channels which provide long and tortuous paths through which the air-smoke mixture passes. In one embodiment, the passageway of the filter is around the periphery of a hollow cylindrical core, covered by paper. This passageway comprises a plurality of circumferentially disposed axially spaced groover interconnected by axially extending connector channels. Islands or abutments at the discharge ends of certain air-smoke channels abruptly change the direction of flow of air-smoke mixture and separate it into separate streams which eventually are recombined.

  • Patent number: 3946748
Abstract: A tobacco filter for smoking articles includes a holder having a tubular configuration and a filter medium disposed within the holder. The filter medium comprises a 2 .times. 2 twill woven double napped cotton fabric which has been treated with a sodium chloride solution containing sodium silico aluminate, dextrose, and potassium iodide. As the smoke travels through the 2 .times. 2 twill woven double napped cotton fabric treated with the sodium chloride solution the fabric absorbs and adsorbs many of the harmful constituents of the tobacco smoke to reduce the potential harm a user of the tobacco article may suffer. Means are provided for compressing the filter medium disposed in the holder at locations which are spaced apart along the longitudinal axis of the holder. The means for compressing the filter medium preferably comprise a plurality of projections disposed on the holder at spaced apart locations along the longitudinal axis of the holder.

  • Patent number: 3939740
Abstract: Method and apparatus for the removal of tobacco cuttings in the wrapper cutting portion of a cigar making machine in which a hollow, rotatable die turret having a pair of hollow die units on its upper surface, air openings at its lower surface and passageways from such openings to the interior of the units, is rotatably mounted on a stationary support having a pair of air chambers therein with openings in the upper wall thereof which permit air to flow into or out of the turret passageways through the openings at its lower surface at various portions of the cycle of rotation of the turret. Each die unit has holes around the periphery of the cutting edge which extend into the die unit interior. One of the chambers is kept continuously under vacuum so that during part of the rotation of the turret, air is drawn through the die unit holes to maintain a strip of tobacco on top of a die unit.

  • Patent number: 3939848
Abstract: The smoking article disclosed includes a novel filter for removing a substantial portion of the potentially harmful tars, resins, nicotine, etc. from the tobacco smoke from the smoking article. The novel filter comprises an assemblage of crimped, cellulose acetate fibers and includes first and second zones having elongated, elliptical traverse crosssections and a transition zone therebetween. A portion of the fibers in the first zone and a portion of the fibers in the transition zone are orientated transversely to the longitudinal axis of the filter.
