With Filter Patents (Class 131/215.2)
  • Patent number: 8534296
Abstract: This apparatus for the smoking of tobacco and other bulk dried material enables those persons who enjoy smoking to do so in a healthier manner. In the described appliance a water bath cools and filters the smoke before it reaches the mouth and lungs of the smoker. An array of, preferably conical, diffusion screens (210) restricts the size of particulate matter passing through the device from the combustion bowl (180) to the user. By controlling air pressures, valves (240) in series with the diffuser (210) prevent water from flowing into it thereby minimizing the pressure a user must apply to draw smoke through the appliance. This keeps solids from accumulating on or in the diffuser which facilitates cleaning. A static turbine (300) in the throat (110) of the appliance aids additional cooling while reducing the amount of suction that must be applied by a user to clear the main chamber.

  • Patent number: 8201564
Abstract: Fibrous material suitable for incorporation into filter elements of smoking articles such as cigarettes are impregnated with additives and agents such as flavorants, flavorant-enhancers and/or free radical scavengers. The fibrous material is contacted with the additive dispersed in a high pressure gas or supercritical fluid (SCF) held at elevated pressures. The high pressure gas or SCF swells the fibrous matrix and enables the additive to be incorporated within the matrix. When pressure is reduced, the gas or SCF vaporizes and leaves the additive embedded in the fiber interstices. As a result, the additive is slowly released over a finite period of time. When incorporated into a cigarette filter, the additive is released at a desired rate from the interior of the fibrous filter into the cigarette smoke.

  • Patent number: 6418937
Abstract: A pipe assembly is provided to accommodate the specific filter preferences of the pipe smoker. The pipe assembly includes a bowl, a stem and a mouthpiece. A cylindrical mounting aperture extends into the end of the stem remote from the bowl, and a connecting passage joins the mounting aperture to the tobacco receiving cavity in the bowl. The mouthpiece has a proximal end with a passage therein and a distal end that can be slidably received in the mounting aperture of the stem. The mouthpiece further includes a filter receptacle that communicates with the passage extending into the proximal end of the mouthpiece. The filter receptacle is dimensioned to accommodate wide prior art filters. The pipe assembly further includes a tubular filter adapter with an outside diameter for slidable engagement in the filter receptacle and an inside diameter dimensioned to receive narrower pipe filters.

  • Patent number: 6345625
Abstract: Secondary smoke is harmful to passive smokers. A filter sleeve (1) comprises a sleeve (10) with a downstream portion (11) adapted for receiving inhale smoke into an inhalation flow path (13), an upstream portion (12) adapted for inhalation of said inhale smoke and for receiving exhale smoke into an exhalation flow path (14), filter means (15) provided along said exhalation flow path (14), and means (16) for checking reverse flow of ambient air through said exhalation flow path (14). A filter sheath (3) is adapted for overlaying a significant expanse of the sidestream smoke emission areas of a rod of smokable material (7), said filter sheath (3) is sufficiently porous and significantly unimpaired by combustion.
